How the fuck is this Sony's fault? Those "hacker" mother fuckers are breaking the law, are you people fucking retarded? That's like saying "I should kill someone because they stole a book from my house." You people have to stop thinking with this hero/vigilante image you're giving the people doing this to Sony, they were doing the right thing trying to deal with people fucking around with their products.
I'm finding that quite a few people believe both sides of this issue are in the wrong. The hackers are horribly shitty people for stealing so much damn money, but Sony is completely retarded for their horrible track record and security.

I understand this will probably mean layoffs, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Many people on facepunch were very angry at the Sony and the choices it made, and it's nice to see something bite them in the ass. It's nowhere near killing someone.
The list of emails is probably worth shittons if sold to people who run spam botnets This could with a pretty large shitload of spam
I hope whatever hackers decided to take fucking credit card information and then withdraw money don't think they're doing something good by thinking they're getting back for the whole Geohot thing. There's a difference between fucking over families and supporting Geohot.
In my opinion, Sony don't deserve overly offensive action against them, they were attacked after all, their network had been safe for nearly 4 or 5 years now. They weren't expecting this kind of attack at all. But the customers do deserve compensation for this gross negligence. The amount it could cost them is staggering though.
I'm not going to deny that my views are extremist due to the fact I have extreme dislike for Sony. Frankly, Sony should have expected this sort of attack from the beginning. It's like installing a styrofoam bank safe because you don't expect your bank will be robbed. I really don't want to see so many people losing their jobs, but what I want to see is the responsibility and the weight of the severity pushed down upon the shoulders of those responsible at Sony, just as much as I want the hackers to get caught.

"PSN Leak" ---> Doesn't "leak" usually imply that information was leaked to the public/internet? :raise: So far only the people that breached the PSN and caused this whole fiasco have the private info of PSN users, right?
I don't think they deserve to loose this large amount but this is karma for Sony being dicks and raiding the houses of hackers who where simply bringing Linux back and nothing more, which also caused damage to those hackers property which cost those hackers a lot of money.

The hackers shouldn't have this information. Hence it is a leak.
They took our personal info and are making fraudulent charges on it, but it's taking down a company so they are heroes!
I'm not going to deny that my views are extremist due to the fact I have extreme dislike for Sony. Frankly, Sony should have expected this sort of attack from the beginning. It worked until someone broke in. Nothing is safe, banks are robbed all the time if someone wants in enough, they will find a way no matter the security in place.
This may be enough to drive them bankrupt... Maybe.
I'd hope not. PS3 is the best released console so far. It just needs more games.
I can't believe you are saying layoffs are a viable and respectable choice in this situation.
Choice? As in sony chose to lose all of that money? I'm not saying they are a good thing, just that they are most likely inevitable. And that they aren't the end of the world. People who managed to get a job at Sony will probably manage to get a job somewhere else. It's not like layoffs at wal-mart, where people's lives can be ruined.
I don't think they deserve to loose this large amount but this is karma for Sony being dicks and raiding the houses of hackers who where simply bringing Linux back and nothing more, which also caused damage to those hackers property which cost those hackers a lot of money.
This isn't karma at fucking all. Jesus christ stop using "karma" as a justification for this. The damages Sony suffered from the modding community, and the damages Sony committed to the modding community do not total anywhere near this.
Sony had the system safe for quite a while already. It worked until someone broke in. Nothing is safe, banks are robbed all the time if someone wants in enough, they will find a way no matter the security in place.
But supposedly keeping the information in plain text? That is just PURE laziness right there, pure inexcusable laziness. The system was safe because people weren't looking for exploits. They incited anger and interest in whoever the hackers are, and they got searched for exploits. They had very big holes in their security system that could have been patched up.

The damages Sony suffered from the modding community, and the damages Sony committed to the modding community do not total anywhere near this.
If it was an equal amount of money, they probably wouldn't have even noticed. It is pretty much an equal amount of pain though. It's like a giant and a midget. The giant pokes the midget in the eye with a splinter, so the midget pokes the giant in the eye with a huge wooden stick. yes the actual sticks were different sizes, but if the midget used a smaller one, the giant wouldn't have suffered the same amount.
Did you hear that sound? That's the sound of Sony's stock crashing.

Didn't an unprecedented, huge natural disaster happen there a while back? Damn, I hope the severe crippling of a large economic entity wont effect the speed of recovery! (it'll be small yes but noticeable) You could also take an example of someone working there, getting fired because there's not enough money to pay them, and then not having enough money to get his family back on it's feet after having their house destroyed. These are extreme examples but that doesn't make them any less plausible.
They took our personal info and are making fraudulent charges on it, but it's taking down a company so they are heroes!
They should have taken down a company that actually monopolizes a majority of the world. Not a company that actually attempts to make good hardware... How about one of the ones that sells you shit products and costs you an arm and a leg? (Apple would be a prime target)
Sony had the system safe for quite a while already. It worked until someone broke in. That bank should be sued for not keeping the client's money safe.
A leak is a general term for information getting into the hands of people who shouldn't have it. The hackers shouldn't have this information. Hence it is a leak.
really? I wouldn't call that a leak unless the hackers do end up releasing the information they stole from the PSN to the internet. (in which case they would have leaked the personal information of PSN customers to the internet) Until then, it is what it is: A hack into the PSN and theft of personal information from PSN customers.
really? I wouldn't call that this PSN fiasco a leak unless the hackers do end up releasing the information they stole from the PSN.
aren't people losing money over this already
That's just rumors.

Also I have problems with microsoft asking you to pay $60 for basics on a pretty bad console when on PS3 I could be paying the same for premium. (Yes I have used both)

Until then, it is what it is: A hack into the PSN and theft of private information from PSN customers.
I looked up the definition and you're correct. I was wrong.
leaked - Of a document, etc, produced by a company or organisation, intended to be confidential but having been released to the public or the press

24 billion dollars won't drive them bankrupt. Sony is a MASSIVE company.
It's certainly going to hurt their brand-name though, and those losses are not easily quantified.
It was hacked by Ridge Racer and a Giant Enemy Crab.
That's just rumors.
what no it's not a rumor there's many people even in this forums alone that got charges drawn on their cards
But supposedly keeping the information in plain text? That is just PURE laziness right there, pure inexcusable laziness.
Where does it state the info was in raw text?
Good.

Good.
sony is not a faceless corporation but a collection of people who work hard to provide us with services and products, all who have families to feed. a lot of those people will lose their job
