Best Buy is where I go for PC games if I want a hard copy. Otherwise it's steam. I especially love their sales. I bought Oblivion GOTY, Fallout 3 GOTY, The Force Unleashed, and Batman: AA when they were on sale for 8 bucks each.
I should have no excuse to be bored for like 4 years.
My blackops downloaded incredibly fast. First it had paused the multiplayer download and was downloding SP only. Then after like 30minutes both were 46%, then later they were complete, within few hours.
That's not really fast. Usually it takes me around 1 hour at most to download a full game.
Steam is the tits. Way of the future, baby.
Wat? Have you ever tried contacting Steam Support. Ever? Or just second hand experiences.
Yeah, brought GTA4, met minimum req's, game didnt start, complained because thats technically a faulty product that shouldnt have been marketed falsely to me (this is when GTA4 was brought out and most peoples copy didn't work on PC when it should have, Steam ended up refunding a load).
Anyway, Steam basically said tough shit, you brought it through us, now deal with it, we don't have to give you any support, contact Rockstar.
I can buy games that are rated 18 when I'm 15 via Steam.
Can I do that with Retail stores? Nope.
Haven't seen any game store enforcing this anyway.

Are you dumb?
Steam didn't make the game.
Steam doesn't know anything about the mechanics of the game.
Rockstar made the game.
Rockstar knows about the mechanics of the game and may be able to help you with it.
Black Ops is goddamn 60€ on Steam.
I can get it boxed for 42€, free shipping.
steam sucks
All I've ever seen in brick-and-mortar retailers is console games and a few older PC games stashed on the back shelves, in the dusty, poorly lit part of the store, with the guy making a sacrifice to Khorne.
I still prefer to buy hard copies of my games so I can reminisce in the ever so nostalgic smell of a freshly opened game case. Don't act like you don't miss it too!
I over use this
:wtc:
I love not actually owning my own games.
To be honest I prefer buying PC games from shops, my internet is bad so it takes forever to download a game from steam.
Steam is not killing the PC gaming market , It's improving it so much. It's definitely killing retail though , but Game and that are basically all XBOX 360 & PS3 games
I love not actually owning my own games.
Technically you don't own any game you buy, you're just purchasing a license to use them.
I buy PC games retail because my connection is too shitty to download games. Fucking bullshit.

Yeah but you don't have to worry about being locked out of your account.
When you purchase a game you should receive the game.
Not pander to a horrible system which takes total control over your library of games.
lol if you scam someones items in tf2 you lose access to all the games you have purchased ever.
steam sounds fair

I'm pretty sure they just don't let you trade now.

There is no such thing as a good monopoly
...Excellent..
I haven't bought a PC game from a store in years. They never have a decent selection. PC games are always shoved in a tiny corner where no one can find them and when you DO find them, they never have the game you want.
Steam is just overall more reliable, quick, and easy.
Haha, this is awesome. Steam is easy to use and efficient, i'm glad it's quelling old-age competition.
Black Ops on Steam: £40
Black Ops at Game: £35
Nope.
Black Ops at Steam: £40
Black Ops at local electronics store: £70
Yup.
There is no such thing as a good monopoly
I beg to differ.
and besides, Valve doesn't have a complete monopoly. you've also got all those other digital Distribution platforms.
but they all suck in comparison
Isnt it a good thing that you can't return games (for shop owners)
No need to search for cd's, games are perfectly up to date (no patch hassle), killer deals (GTAI to SA for €8?!), no messing with multiple cd's, no entering cd-keys when reinstalling...
What's not to like?
ok so game stores bitch that steam is hurting their sales and yet those same game stores have been hurting developer profits for YEARS by selling used games.
The only con I can see to Steam is that you can't return/trade in a game you bought and don't like.
Also, has no-one considered the amount of garbage Steam gets rid of? They're removing from the fills millions of plastic films and stuff that come from the packaging of the game, remove tons of greenhouse gas from the transport that doesn't need to be done, AND money for advertisement and catalogs (that I think I'm walking on eggs, but personally, I have never seen real advertisement for Steam, and well their store IS a catalog in itself.)
UK retailers are killing the PC gaming market, not steam. I dunno about everywhere else in the UK but all of the major stores selling games within about 20 miles of my house have a selection of like 5 PC games, all being the latest most popular releases (not necessarily the games people actually want). I don't think I have purchased a game from a physical shop in years, I get all my games from Amazon and steam now. It is just so much easier (and usually cheaper).
This claim seems really similar to the "iTunes will kill music stores!!!!" claim a few years ago, although I think the only reason that hasn't happened is because people still want to own physical copies of music CDs, this clearly isn't the case with games as others have said there is zero benefit to owning a physical copy of most games.
As for steam locking out the market and taking over etc, people (both developers / publishers and end users) use steam because it is the best thing available. The fact is Valve know what they are doing and how to do it well.
