Steam: Great deals every single day; effective advertising relevant to my interests; easily accessible game overviews, screenshots, trailers, and demos in one standard page; all my serial codes are stored; one client to manage updates on all of my games; never have to worry about scratched CDs; I would suck VALVe's dick
Retail chains: I have to leave the house
The only con I can see to Steam is that you can't return/trade in a game you bought and don't like.
Also, has no-one considered the amount of garbage Steam gets rid of? They're removing from the fills millions of plastic films and stuff that come from the packaging of the game, remove tons of greenhouse gas from the transport that doesn't need to be done, AND money for advertisement and catalogs (that I think I'm walking on eggs, but personally, I have never seen real advertisement for Steam, and well their store IS a catalog in itself.)
You're not taking into account Steam Servers and the emissions from them.

I think it balances out, not to mention power is being generated anyway.
Steam's better, that's why Steam monopolises.
Steam should distribute movies too imo.
I'm torn between the awesomeness of steam and the coolness of a retail game's box. It's so large! :3:
Good thing valve isn't evil, then.

Just wait for the day when they change the CEO, then it'll be go-time
UK retailers are killing the PC gaming market, not steam. I dunno about everywhere else in the UK but all of the major stores selling games within about 20 miles of my house have a selection of like 5 PC games, all being the latest most popular releases (not necessarily the games people actually want). I don't think I have purchased a game from a physical shop in years, I get all my games from Amazon and steam now. It is just so much easier (and usually cheaper).
That more or less describes the situation I have in Scotland with buying PC games via retail. The closest shops are 15 miles away, one has about one shelf's worth of PC games, and the other has none at all. Brilliant.
If they cancel your account then you have obviously done something wrong.
Or someone complained about a trade you made in TF2.
it's because most other digital distribution services suck big time. Not valve's fault that most of them were late to the game years later after they started steam in 2003.
To be honest I buy via Steam because they always offer great oldies that I never played, while game stores here don't even have any of those, and they only seem to sell the newest Call of Duties or Halos or whatever. I'm not a big mainstream person so I feel like Steam has a perfect excuse. People just grab the cheapest method. I bought Splinter Cell Conviction at my local store because it was very cheap as opposed to Steam's still fairly high price while other times I buy Steam offers because I never even saw those games at the store.
Funniest part is the bit where all these stores are complaining about not being able to sell their PC games when they almost never have PC games.
Pretty much every game store in my area has a large 360, PS3, And nintendo section, with a little corner for some PC games, and they're only mad right now because Black Ops came out and they're unable to sell it because there's a better way to buy it rather then coming over to some overpriced store.
In short, I don't like game stores anymore, they're all console lovers :smith:
Steam should distribute movies too imo.
I could have sworn I read awhile back that Valve was considering selling movies and music. I once asked Burton about it, but he seemed genuinely baffled (or he was playing dumb), so maybe I just made it up.
I still like to buy my games retail though, just cause I love the boxes and to read the manuals and that stuff.

That would be great if global warming was actually real :downs:

Indeed, consolefag stores :(
I really like Steam and I want it to be standard thing like itunes
Technically you don't own any game you buy, you're just purchasing a license to use them.
With a hard copy you can use it regardless if the publisher changes it's licensing terms.
The Gamestops at the mall I go to sell barely any pc games.
Steam is helping actually, makes things simpler. Whoever wrote this needs to stop their bitching.
Are you dumb?
Steam didn't make the game.
Steam doesn't know anything about the mechanics of the game.
Rockstar made the game.
Rockstar knows about the mechanics of the game and may be able to help you with it.
No shit Sherlock. However Steam is a store selling products and if they were based here then I would rightfully be under the Consumer Protection Act would be entitled to my money back for a faulty product.
It's also a moralistic thing, wouldn't expect you to know anything about that though.
I can just imagine a meeting at the retail shop's headquarters:
"Sir, since our stores barely stock any PC games, people are starting to switch over to digital distributors like steam to buy them! What do we do?"
"STOP STOCKING THE STEAM GAMES AS WELL!"
Clever move.
Now why the fuck would i change from Steam to other less good services?
I like buying games through steam which gives money to valve instead of using game stop which likes to fuck over its customers
Steam is pretty horrible for people with bad connections/no internet.

ubisoft

Most of the CD games I have are all the crappy "Sold out" versions.
Except for The orange box and Just cause 2 which are steam versions anyway
If any company is going to have a monopoly, I'd like it to be Valve. They seem to treat us right.
Yes they do. You don't see walkmans in circulation any more, and itunes is huge.
I have a CD walkman. Then again I hate the lower quality of mp3 music and don't really have an mp3 player.
Also if companies want to complain about steam and have us actually give a shit they should compete with non-shitty online services and lower prices. Simple as that.
Steam isn't killing the PC market, just taking it in a new direction. Retail stores are slowly becoming obsolete under digital distribution and this will probably lead to a few companies shutting down, but that doesn't mean the market as a whole is dying. New technology appears, someone invests in it and after some clever decisions + a bit of luck scores big-time when it gains popularity and the technology goes towards becoming the new standard. This is a constantly on-going process everywhere in the business world - Keep up or be gone.
