Neither do game stores if you know where to go. People flock to major retailers, leaving the small ones unnoticed.
You're still going out of your way to do something that you could do from your house at a much more leisurely pace.

I see your logic.
It works fine for me whilst not having the internet extended periods of time.
Same here, I've gone a month without having to be on the internet...
In my town the only PC games that are stocked are usually some football game. So i use steam because i can get all my games easily from it.
Not to mention i don't want to buy a console and suffer with a controller, pre-set settings for controls and graphics with no modding user base.
They have over 70% of all legally sold music sales.
Personally, I think that a major benefit to steam is the community. There isn't something that's integrated so well into any other community, it was a matter of time. VAC is another big benefit.
The community blends in well with the store too. Bigger community, more games, high accessibility. Valve/Steam guarantees something like 300% sales increase so it must be pretty appealing to game developers, especially indie.
So you are complaining that someone got banned for hacking?

I don't see where you get that idea. All I said was that they do disable people's accounts.
Shops don't sell PC games because everyone buys them on Digital Distribution or pirates them because shops don't sell PC games because everyone buys them on Digital Distribution or pirates them because shops don't sell PC games because everyone buys them on Digital Distribution or pirates them because...
I'm glad.
There is no stopping..... THE MACHINE.
Well maybe retailers would have a chance IF THEY WERE ACTUALLY SELLING PC GAMES.
'But how long do you wait before you take control of your own digital strategy?'
Valve have been in control all of the time, never been hostile and welcomed new developers with open arms. If they become to heavy handed, they listen to the community.
As long as they are not a publically traded company everything will be fine.
Good luck trying to do that when you've lost your internet connection for a week, without any notice.
If the majority of corporations constantly put PC on the back shelf and virtually ignore it, then they have absolutely no right to complain about not being able to compete with someone who actually cares about it.
This behavior is absolutely hilarious, most importantly I am not even sure if it is truthful. After endless crappy ports, absolute DRM idiocy, and straight up carelessness, someone is suddenly complaining that the PC gaming market is being dominated by someone who actually pays attention.
Having the actual box, with the disc and game in it actually adds respect for the game, on steam it's click buy and oh.. yeah.. i own this game. Basically you get a better experience buying it in store, but it's just a tad bit more hassle.
We all like steam because of how easy it is to use, but it could be improved alot and i don't like how i cannot sell games i buy on there once im done. Besides that, what happens when steam eventually dies in 10 years time? All the games you bought.. pretty much worthless.
I don't mind STEAM to be honest, I'm kinda glad. They offer fantastic customer support and treat all their customers great. The STEAM Community and layout they just offer for gaming is just great overall.
I'm pleased to see steam succeeding. Thank heavens they're making enough money off of it that they don't have to resort to micro-transactions. OH WAIT
microsoft needs to create a live store for all their xbox titles.

This is more or less what I was thinking...Valve had one of the few good approaches to anti-piracy and now everyone else is running around waving their arms like they didn't see it coming.

How is having a little cardboard box with a disc and a quick start card in it a better experience than saving gas money and getting the game almost instantly?
And also, they can turn off authentication so you don't need to connect to steam to play your games.
It's not Valve's fault they're so much better at selling shit than everyone else.
Competition, baby.
Problem, PC gaming market?

This sounds a lot like "Why should I care about anyone else's opinion if I find mine better anyway?".
I always buy physical copies of games when possible. I find it more satisfying to have something physical, and my internet connection isn't very fast.
It might just be me, but I actually prefer going to a store to get my copies simply because I like going places. I enjoy going places where there's lots of people, it makes me feel happy for some reason.

He's right though, besides It costs a lot to make those Disks, Boxes, special addition do-dads, ship them and put them on retail Shelves. so much so that the publishers only see about 10$ - 20$ per game and the devs 5$ - 10$, the rest goes to the retailers, manufacturing and shipping companies. everyone's going to move to Digital distribution simply because it's more cost effective. we're seeing it first on the PC mainly because our platform can handle it but at about the 2014 mark (when most people expect the next console cycle to begin) there will be a greater emphasis on downloadable games and you'll see it built into the design of these new consoles.
Expect 1Tb+ hard drives to be standard on these things, plus better networking and online services.

Lack of physical presence in buying a digital copy of the game is ofcourse a drawback, but it's barely distinguishable against the huge advantages of digital distribution (both for sellers and buyers), which is simply much more effective. Book stores are seeing the same transformation as well; What's the point in running an expensive physical store in a large mall with huge rent and paid employees when you can simply have one guy running an online store and a few more handling packaging and shipping, allowing you to sell books much cheaper? The crowd preferring the traditional means of buying will remain, but dwindling in population.
Besides, the digital copies of your games are probably safer on Steam's array of databases with all of their backups and redundancy than your singular CDs with a lifetime of roughly 50 years (disks deteriorate with time even without seeing use) sitting in your home. Valve has announced that the emergency procedure in case Steam is forced to shut down is to release the unlocked game EXEs.
They're just buthurt.
I mean I sure would be if there was another company doing better than mine.
