So they get ripped off when they buy supercomputers? I don't get that much.
Competition is a lot tougher when you got to sell a product to the parents of a 13-year-old COD "3l1te Fr@gg3r" than it is when you got to sell a product to the 3 people in the world who need and afford a supercomputer you are producing
That must be one bored supercomputer.
And Sony loses money on every PS3 sold. :v:
They should get an xbox 360, just a single, token one, to all point and laugh at. Imagine that. 1 360 surrounded by 2200 ps3s. I'd give it shit if I were there
Ps3 has no gaem : (

lol Why not just freaking buy a huge PS3 which has the capabilities as 2200 PS3s? I got imagination Imagi- NAYAYAYAYTION!!!!
What's with all the PS3 news?
Uh, that wouldn't be funny in any way. That's actually a pretty fucking stupid idea.
I thought it was funny
Why don't they buy an IBM supercomputer?
Because they use PS3 components too. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7443557.stm
I thought it was funny
No one else did.
Dude the Air Force just want to play games all day
They are lying, there just going to play Call of Duty all day.
They need to train the soldiers in the art of health regeneration.
It may take 2,200 PS3's to make a super computer, but it only takes 4 PCs to create a monster machine.
PS3s are like mini supercomputers; they have "synergistic processing elements" (six usable ones). Cluster these and you get a cheap supercomputer. IBM's newest supercomputer is in fact based on the same Cell architecture as the PS3.
Too bad they have to find used, "fat" PS3's since Sony removed the Linux-capability from the shitt... I mean slim PS3.
I read the title and thought, holy shit theres a super computer that eats PS3's
Why don't they buy an IBM supercomputer?
If that one IBM messes up than every things fucked, but get a big cluster of PS3s and a few crash, it will most likely be fine. The more the merrier I guess. (Plus, what j-richardson said, its less expensive.)
This shows the PS3's capabilities.
No.
Maybe 2000 PS3s cost less
Doubt it
Doubt it
IBM mainframes start from 1 million bux, and that's the shittiest model. So yeah.
This is retarded. Does anyone want to help me actually figure the real results from this? I don't know anything about PS3's but I know a bit about supercomputers. The hardest thing to find is a price for them though. This is the most recent supercomputer built by Cray:
Jaguar is a petascale supercomputer built by Cray at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. As of November 2009[update], it was the world's fastest computer with a peak performance of more than 1,750 teraflops (1.75 petaflops). A Cray XT5 system, Jaguar has 224,162 Opteron processor cores, and operated with a version of Linux.
I can tell you right now 224,162 cores will kick the shit out of 2200 PS3's, but I'm not sure about the price difference. I know that 2200 PS3's would be around $650,000. I'm sure a Cray supercomputer isn't cheap but a half a million dollars could get you a pretty good machine.
competition for him
IBM mainframes start from 1 million bux, and that's the shittiest model. So yeah.
It was a joke
I just requested a quote for an XT supercomputer from Cray Inc.
They're buying them for components and parts to use in the construction of a super computer. They probably already welded 5,000 Mac screens together to make a giant monitor room.
It was a joke
Well I thought you were joking but when I saw your name I thought that you were serious. PS3 linux is really useless in my opinion, since the Hypervisor strictly limits the hardware access of linux, and only dedicates small amount of resources for the operating system.

Firefox ran somehow still.
ps3s are a lot stronger than you think they are
