The controller needs a lot of work, and I believe that they should make it more geared towards making games that were meant for kb + m into games that are playable in a living room.
An actual d-pad would be way more useful, especially if you're playing any 2d games. Playing 2d games using an analog stick feels awful.
I think their controller and steam machine endeavor is a terrible idea in the first place though.

It doesnt look like a traditional Joystick though, more like the 8-way D-Pad as described earlier.
I feel like they're doing this because not everyone is going to get used to movement with the left pad and they may want the option of a traditional joystick (which can also be used for weapon swapping etch like you've all been saying); but aiming with a joystick was never good at all, and the touch pad is quite a ways better in terms of aiming accuracy so a right joystick isn't needed.
What are those RG and LG things on the back?
I think RG and LG stands for right grip and left grip. I'm sure what else they could be.
What I really want to see with the steam controller is at least three variations of it + the ability to totally configure what every joy button does etc
I am so sick of this crap where I can't even change the buttons in a game
it's pathetic at this point. I know for controllers this is a hyper common thing but there's no excuse. Why can't I have RB to jump?
and they always give you crap presets with dumb gimmicks no one likes.

Wasnt that feature confirmed a long time ago?

Got a source?
unless I use joy2key (which is useless in gamepad supporting games and clunky) I'm pretty screwed.
it pretty much makes steam controller my golden weapon of destruction if its true.
By revolutionary do you mean a revolution in being extremely awkward and a huge pain on the thumbs? I loved my N64 but it has one of the worst designed controllers in the history of consoles
literally need three hands to use it
Point of the N64 controller's three prongs was to offer a rudimentary way to change up your control scheme long before modular controllers like the Wiimote would become practical. It wasn't actually meant to have all three prongs used at once, and the games back then were primitive enough that they didn't usually require many controls, so there wasn't much - if any - use of the prong your hands weren't on.

It works similar to joy-to-key but presumably better, and you can map multiple things onto the trackpads.
I seem to remember a video of someone demonstrating this but i cant find it.

Every single FPS controller preset
-Left handed
-"We literally swapped two buttons"
-Left handed "We literally swapped two buttons"
To be honest, I forgot Steam machines were even a thing
Valve is being terrible about advertising this. There's so much confusion about them, and they're not even addressing it or making a FAQ or anything. They're just stretching out the whole beta thing until eventually nobody cares or notices that they're even officially out.

So did Valve.
They have pretty much screwed over all it's manufacturers as well.

fighting game control on a pad's analog stick, aka "please kill me"

especially on this thing, daaaamn dude i swear my hands just shriveled up and fell off at the thought of trying to play fighting games with it

So many misinformed people in this thread. The point of the controller is to work on any game, so YES, you can customize every aspect of it
one of the few articles I read about the controller from someone who used it, they said they thought it was atrocious to use.

Because they very much are still beta. I can't really think of a single good reason for getting a box with SteamOS in it. The only redeeming factor is the in-home streaming stuff, but you can already do that with any Linux/Windows box.
hey guys i just found a leaked image of the latest revision of the steam controller
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Xbox-360-S-Controller.png[/t]
At this point, I'm just wondering why did Valve went on with this...
It's like they are reinventing the wheel by making it better, and just going backwards. And that's not just because of the analog stick.

Honestly, that's just what it's gonna end up as. Pretty much the only thing I expect them to keep are the grip buttons and maybe the pads. Everything else has been pretty much gutted at this point, and it's a damn shame because I really thought they had something special with the original design.

Well, also consider that they gutted so much of it only because people have been testing the thing a lot and they came to the conclusion that it didn't really work in those designs. It doesn't look as "unique" but the newer designs are most likely much more compatible and much easier to use.
valve are smart, they designed the controller beccause they thought it would work better without the analog sticks, they did testing and found the analog sticks worked in the design so they changed it.
So basically they took into account facts and testing and changed their design to suit, which is basically what any intelligent designer would and should do.
So whats the big deal.
I think the analog stick is just to give people something to use for like, say, the c-stick. I don't think it's the end of the touchpads, it's just there in case people want to use something else.

original design looks very silly IMHO, what the hell is the point of a touchscreen?
I would prefer they readded those four buttons next to the trackpad however, and kept the current design. or turn the AXBY style buttons into 6. But that's just me.
6 buttons would feel way better than 4, kind of like N64 controller had, or the sega genesis
So valve is progressively dumping all of the cool features on the steam controller because they keep hiring literal retards to playtest everything.
Fuck's sake valve.

you're bitching about how it looks
its not even come out yet, the entire point of prototyping is "Throw as many ideas out there as you can, see what actually works"

google glass had it bad

leap motion, far less severe.

Prototypes are a shit example of the final product. They're meant to look stupid because what if a stupid idea turns out to be an amazing idea that sells well? No matter how insane, you thow ideas into it and see how it works, and constantly refine until you get something amazing

If the "cool features" actually turned out to be awful to use then what's the point. I haven't had the chance to try the controller, but obviously there's a reason for why they are doing this.

Being different just for the sake of being different isn't good either.

Would you rather it was another shitty remake of the xbox controller? because the trackpads are what makes it so good. they just need to change what is around those.
it's not different for the sake of being different
it's not different for the sake of being BETTER. and it's made to be a "Controller for the PC by PC"
xbox one has an amazing controller but joysticks aren't the only thing out there you know.
i dont get why people are complaining about the touch pads, it's the only thing that makes the controller stand out. If you don't like them get a 360 controller... it's designed to make mouse-using games easier. I think the analogue stick will help so you can use two thumbs for mouse in games that need quick pointer movement (top-down strategy type stuff probably) and have the stick for panning the camera or something or and analogue + right pad for FPS would probably feel better than a touchpad for movement
