Origin launches Game Time; battles the "try before you buy" piracy excuse.

For a second there I thought they were giving everyone 48 hours of gameplay, with a clock that stopped when you were out of the game.
I'd never need to buy games again if that was the case.
This isn't going to do anything to piracy because it was a phony excuse to begin with.
This is namely dealing with legal issues regarding prosecution. By doing this, if anyone states, "BUT I WAS TRYING BEFORE I BUY" they'll get thrown to curb and told to fuck off.
thats enough time to play through it's pathetic campaign 4 times over.
Yeah, but who bought Titanfall for the campaign?
Honestly, 48 hours of Titanfall's multiplayer is HUGE, especially for such a recent title. I can say a lot of bad things about EA, but their recent efforts with Origin certainly aren't one of them. Never thought I'd see Valve lagging behind EA of all people.

yes but not everyone has or wants Origin, so they're not really combatting anything there.

This is just a free weekend.
So uuh how do we do it?
This is just a free weekend.
Except this free weekend is whenever you want
This is just a free weekend.
Except you don't choose when a free weekend is, can't preload the game before it begins, gives you the full game unlike some free weekends.
This is just a free weekend.
what novangel said.
I wish there were games that I wanted to play that I already don't own on Origin
You know, I wouldn't mind a new, optional sort of "pay as you go" game distribution model where you pay, say, $5 for 10-20 hours of gameplay and are allowed to download and play whatever in the library.
That's the most horrible idea I've ever heard of.
Valve you don't have a monopoly any more, get your shit together.
You spend the entire weekend downloading the piece of shit only to press play when it expires
Time only starts counting down when you play the game for the first time. Add it to your account, download it over the next week, and then press play on Friday and be able to play for the next 48 hours.
Didn't Square try something similar a while ago, only you could watch ads or do "offers" to get more time? And that ultimately didn't work for them?
Yeah, but who bought Titanfall for the campaign?

people who don't care about call of duty with a gimmick.
This isn't going to do anything to piracy because it was a phony excuse to begin with.
Yeah, good work talking on the name of an entire portion of the player base.
This isn't going to do anything to piracy because it was a phony excuse to begin with.
I know plenty of people who try out games first by pirating it, and then buy it if it's good.

make the entire valve collection free for 5 hours
who hasnt played every (or at least the ones that matter) valve game?
people who just joined the pc master race
Except this free weekend is whenever you want
Um,
This weekend you’ll be able to download Titanfall and play for free for two days straight.
that is fucking great
people who don't care about call of duty with a gimmick.
Heh
He actually thinks that.
Heheh
Um,
They're starting the program this weekend with Titanfall. I really wish bad reading was back.
Um,
on this weekend you will be able to download titanfall
then, when you launch titanfall for the first time, be it instantly after it downloads or a week later, you'll be able to play it for 48 hours.
you went out of your way to take a quote from the article but didn't bother to read it?
yes but not everyone has or wants Origin, so they're not really combatting anything there.
If someone's argument is "well I don't want Origin so NEH, nice try, EA," then they're being a massive brat.

Steam already has demos. Origin is just catching up to that. If they stick with this, and seriously expand this to many of their games, then that's a huge plus. But so far, Steam still has an upper hand. It's just the developer's faults for not making demos to put on Steam. Steam/Valve have nothing to do with it.

also lol i can't remember any games that you play the full thing in the demo. just the first level or whatever
For years I played demos only, the only one which seemed like a full game was space empires 3. Although the unreal tournament games had a fair replay potential.
I don't like the limited time thing, I would rather have a demo limited to a certain level or something. My schedule means I rarely get a free weekend and I like to take my time with things. The 1 day I would have agree downloading slowly from origin would likely leave me feeling frustrated.
Only problem is that this system absolutely requires DRM.
Still, I'm interested in seeing this become available for all Origin games, and how Valve will respond. But seeing as all Valve does these days is Dota 2 tournaments, they probably won't do anything.
who hasnt played every (or at least the ones that matter) valve game?
I've never played any Half-Life game

Are you kidding? Steams userbase is still huge because as shown by this thread, people spread shit about its competitors or try really hard to find a flaw in their service even when they actually do something good for once.
Gog right now is better than steam, all it needs is a few big newer titles and they'll be a really serious competitor. And hell, at least origin and uplay dont crash at random and can load webpages this century.
It's not exactly revolutionary considering it's just an improved free weekend, but it's still a massively improved free weekend and it shows EA is willing to innovate and compete against Steam.
