Are you kidding? Steams userbase is still huge because as shown by this thread, people spread shit about its competitors or try really hard to find a flaw in their service even when they actually do something good for once.
Gog right now is better than steam, all it needs is a few big newer titles and they'll be a really serious competitor. And hell, at least origin and uplay dont crash and random and can load webpages this century.
steam never crashes for me. Uplay wouldn't allow me to download an update for a game i had just recently bought.

You literally just proved his point, well done.
Origin has better download speed, better overall performance and fluidness in the client, better support, better refund policy than steam does. People just like to circle jerk that ea is a bad company and therefore all of origin is bad. The exact opposite for steam and valve.
Steam already has demos. Origin is just catching up to that. If they stick with this, and seriously expand this to many of their games, then that's a huge plus. But so far, Steam still has an upper hand. It's just the developer's faults for not making demos to put on Steam. Steam/Valve have nothing to do with it.
This is correct. EA/Origin can easily do this because everything on Origin is basically owned by EA. They can easily say "we're going to do this with ALL of the games" since it's all theirs. Valve/Steam relies on the publishers to create the content people want. Steam is just a distribution service for tons of publishers, and they have "no control" (obviously some, but not in this sense) over what the creators make. Doing trial based things would also rely on all of the publishers/creators agreeing to do it, and making sure it works properly on all of the games.
Basically, it's easy for EA since they own almost everything on Origin, but difficult for Valve since they actually have a large diversity on Steam.

Honestly EA is a bad company, they just happened to understand that Origin was a great PR tool if used right, and it works. Decent performance, rather good prices, free games and pretty damn good trial system.
Basically for every fuckup they can do they still have the ability to put out a couple free games on Origin and calm people down. I'm not gonna complain, free games are always good.

no i didn't i've had a huge problem with it since i just bought AC: black flag and it kept giving me the "There is no internet connection" error every time i tried starting it, only after several hours of tinkering did i finally get it to work. So no Uplay needs some rework, Other than that it really isn't too bad, So you can fuck off

I would actually prefer Origin to Steam if they didn't charge obscene prices for new releases.
EA are doing everything right recently. It's kinda fantastic.

But I agree that EA has been slightly improving lately, but don't forget that they did that in 2007-2009 too with games like Mirror's Edge and Dead Space coming out, but don't forget what happened next. (microtransactions in $60-$80 games, etc)
Origin is fantastic
Not fantastic :v: but very good regardless
A bit unrelated but Peggle is free on Origin right now.
So this isn't like, you can play any game on origin for like an hour or two. This is essentially a new name for the Steam free weekends? As in, a week from now, you can't try Titanfall for 48 hours?
Edit:
Wait, so apparently you can choose when to activate it. I have Titanfall already, great game. Bought it really cheap though.

Yes you can, if you added it to be played later.

Gah that edit
I really like how they're trying to redeem faith within customers for their shitty failures a couple years back.
I wish they just had decent games to do it with. Don't get me wrong though, I'm curious about Titanfall.

I wish they had better prices. 60 Euros for Inquisition pre-order or 50 for sim city? I think I'll pass for now.
I want to, but I'll pass. Comcast wouldn't want me downloading 40gb.
This is actually great for me, was really tempted to buy titan fall when it came out but passed as i didn't know if it run on my pc or not. And now I get to see if it does in a legal way!
This isn't going to do anything to piracy because it was a phony excuse to begin with.
The best excuse is yarr harr and a bottle o' rum :yarr:
This is just a free weekend.
I've never ever downloaded a free weekend game. The deal starts at 00:00 Saturday (iirc), and personally I shut down my computer at night, so most of the time I'll maybe notice it at maybe 11:00 AM Saturday. Then I'll have to download the game on my not-super-connection, and I won't be able to watch 720p Youtube videos for that duration or load picture heavy sites. This means that maybe I'd be ready to play the game sometime on Sunday, but who knows what other shit I'm doing that weekend?
With this, the clock only starts when I actually start the game - that means 48 hours from when I'm done downloading and actually able to play, instead of that clock starting 12 hours before I start downloading. This is so much better than Steam's alternative that it's dumb to argue that they're just the same.
Valve needs to step it up, I've already been given 3 free titles on Origin in the span of two weeks. Okay, only one of them was an AAA title (BF3), but still. The Steam sales are still great, but Valve isn't the clear cut winner anymore.
The Origin client isn't all that great, though, I've had some problems with it - on the other hand Steam isn't all that great either.
Basically the games become shareware? That's actually really neat.
Nice to see competition. Something Steam really needs.
Please steam implement time-trials too. I bet many devs would love to use such system for their games.
That's the most horrible idea I've ever heard of.
It's basically the subscription of World of Warcraft. It might also mean that developers would update their game freely to try and get people to subscribe, instead of buying a pack and then dlc on top. I'd say it's good for some things, but not everything.
This isn't going to do anything to piracy because it was a phony excuse to begin with.
If you don't think people pirate games because there is no demo of it you are naive.
free weekends
Not enough free weekends.
This is a great idea.
Steam, Origin is getting better and better...
If you don't think people pirate games because there is no demo of it you are naive.
Most people I know prefer to pirate over buying, with or without a demo available.
You know, I wouldn't mind a new, optional sort of "pay as you go" game distribution model where you pay, say, $5 for 10-20 hours of gameplay and are allowed to download and play whatever in the library.
For people like me who hardly have time to play games but want to keep up with the newer multiplayer experiences, it would be nice to not shell out the big bucks for games people abandon in a matter of days, and try out games I wouldn't try out otherwise while cutting down on the steam library fat.
I like how Killer Instinct did it. You can either buy the full game for $20 or you can just buy small pieces of it (in that case characters).

I'm still annoyed that Paradox switched to Steam from Gamersgate, as far as I'm concerned it's a step backwards.
Origin being good is a good thing for steam, competition keeps both sides on the offensive trying to improve where a monopoly breeds an attitude of "we don't have to fix our shit, we're the only choice anyways."
Doesn't this technically mean you could make different Origin accounts and just keep playing Titanfall forever?
Okay, skim-reading these things sometimes is really dumb for me. That's a whole lot more reasonable.
It counts down while you aren't playing
so its basically a free weekend
