They left because the Africans wanted to become independent. Everything was fine until then.
I like how you're leaving out the forced colonialism and tyrannical British rule.
but i'm not saying we shouldn't remember that there was exploitation of the new world, i've even said that it should be renamed to explorer day or something like it, the point is, the spirit of the holiday is to think about exploration and discovery of the unknown, not celebrate the worst deeds done by europeans
i think it's pretty important we learn from our mistakes and understand that with exploration can come exploitation. I think that's a REALLY important message to keep in mind as we go exploring more.
Grade school never taught me this shit, first I was thinking "what the fuck, why change the name of the day", but now I feel it's completely justified.
"Real" history is not often taught in schools, sadly.
i think it's pretty important we learn from our mistakes and understand that with exploration can come exploitation.
You wanna know what your glorious Europeans did to my country? - Destroyed an empire that was recovering from a civil war, which was caused by the Inca emperor dying because of diseases brought by the Spanish - Destroyed many ancestral customs and techniques after sending all of our erudites to die mining for gold and silver like dogs - Brought diseases and pests that killed millions, and actually shortened the lifespans of my ancestors due to forced work and famine and... - Destroyed a highly advanced and efficient agricultural system which ensured the survival of millions across the largest empire in pre-columbian America The Europeans never brought civilization. She arrived much later, after all the damage was done
First of all there was a huge epedemic in the Americas BEFORE the European's arrived that did far worse than any other group. If the Europeans had never arrived they probably wouldn't have learned to treat things like tularemia, giardia, rabies, amebic dysentery, hepatitis, herpes, pertussis, and poliomyelitis, all of which already existed. The shorthand effect of European conquest was bad, but over the time the benefits flowed in.
you've openly stated previously you think gay marriage is wrong and that being gay is a mental disorder. Even with so called "gay friends", you're a homophobe. Having so called "friends" does nothing to lessen that burden on you when you say, and repeat, fucked up shit constantly. Saying that mixed race marriages are a degradation of marriage is actually a pretty analyzable statement that one can easily understand why you're racist from. First off, marriage, in your mind, is a narrow and tiny definition, a traditional definition that existed in a much more closed minded world. Secondly, you define a degradation to that definition in mixed race marriages. That alone tells me that you think the mixing of two races is a degradation to a previously perfect definition. This is far more than enough to understand your view that you think race and sexuality are all important aspects of marriage, and deviating from YOUR view is "degradation", a word that only has negative connotations and denotations. Please, stop trolling this fucking site or start arguing like a real person.
I'm not a troll. You're just too indoctrinated into your views to accept that other people have different ideas. I'm not going to waste my time arguing with you about marriage in a history thread. I've already explained that you clearly can't comprehend the greater points, and because of this feel justified in using groundless labels.

Guys let's not forget how much of an idiot Milly is and how we should ignore him
He died fighting for a cause that he believed in. He did not go to fight with the express intent of killing innocent lives, and I think we are forgetting that. Right or wrong, he's not "evil." Whatever it was he wanted from it, in his mind, was right and good. Everything is perspective. Before anyone says it, I'm not defending terrorism. However, I think to call anything evil shows that you have a unearned sense of moral superiority. In my mind, as long as the intention is to bring something good, in this case, the establishment of a caliphate, then we have no right to determine it evil.
Not only is he an racist AND a homaphobe, but also an ISIS supporter [editline]6th October 2014[/editline] On topic: Do you even comprehend how wrong you are Milly?

I live in South America, my people got hit the hardest by european conquest. We had diseases and epidemics before, but they were never as deadly or transmissible as the ones brought from Europe And is funny how you claim that we could have never learned how to treat diseases. We weren't a bunch of savages running around naked through the highlands. We knew how to treat our diseases. We lost that knowledge when your lovely europeans killed and enslaved all of our scientists and doctors - Edit - "Indoctrinated" my fucking ass. You want to prove a Peruvian wrong on the effects of the Spanish conquest?
Hahaha oh god

I hope they die. This post was alluding to the nature of evil. Read my followups where I clarify that I do not support Islam or the actions of ISIS.

The reason so many Native people got sick is because those diseases were all new to them and their immune systems couldn't handle it, which the settlers then preyed on with primitive chemical warfare.
"Real" history is not often taught in schools, sadly.
Says a lot about the state of our public schools when you can learn more about world history by looking shit up online than you would ever learn in your classes. And on the shitposting troll's rebuttal on lack of resources and geography, going on what I learned from an anthropology class, there was no method of using what resources they had at the time, and the Sahara Desert was one of the main geographical barriers of the Africa region. Not only that, whatever livestock was able to be imported got quickly killed off by a species of fly native to the area. EDIT: Although he is going to pull the "lol public schools" excuse because of what I quoted, this was from a college class, I am fairly sure most of this shit is accurate.
If you have to clarify your point with a followup then you shouldn't be making points in the first place.
No because I figured the average Fp user was intelligent enough to get my meaning. [editline]6th October 2014[/editline]
You're leaving out the part where Europeans intentionally gave the natives disease ridden blankets.

Historians also say that though blankets containing smallpox may have been distributed to Native Americans by the Europeans, they may have been given with good will and intentions, instead of for the purpose of disseminating disease. Additionally, scholars such as Gregory Dowd, are of the opinion that disease was spread by Native Americans returning from battling infected Europeans. Therefore it may have been carried by Native Americans to their own people and spread.[12] Europeans lack of understanding of basic germ theory until proven by Pasteur in 1865, can preclude a thoughtful and systematic use of infected blankets as a weapon.
Point is Europeans are not responsible for the diseases they brought with this.
Aw, but 'Columbus' is easier to say and has only half the syllables.

The more of your posts I read, Milly, the more I think your family probably continued the age-old time-tested European tradition of inbreeding.
The more of your posts I read, Milly, the more I think your family probably continued the age-old time-tested European tradition of inbreeding.
Nope I used to be liberal idiot like all of Facepunch. I used to share pretty much all of your opinions. Then I realized that everything I knew was wrong or inaccurate. Now I read books and study history and am a conservative.
I'm not that much of a history buff but I can tell MillSoose didn't pay attention in class.
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_disease_and_epidemics
You have failed the class for using a non-scholarly source, don't bother coming next week, as I have dropped you from the course with an F and you will be denied credit for the course, see you next semester.

Your most likely a troll as you ignored a well worded and well reasoned post about why your views are racist or sexist or homophobic, you ignored it entirely. Me thinks you're a troll.
look, I found a cited article about you, too! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism
Gee, that isn't reverse racism or anything. It's not like I've stated many times that you people are completely taking what I've said out of context. It's not like I've had to clarify my views on race on multiple instances because you guys think that anyone who isn't on your side is a hateful bigot racist. Black/Asian people aren't somehow incapable of hating you just because they aren't white and conservative like you. Racism goes both ways.

You so far, only argue with throw away posts across a great deal of threads and any time that a well reasoned and rationed argument is thrown at you, it is handwaved away as you did with my post. Take a hint. Stop telling everyone "They just don't get it" or "you're not smart enough to get it like I get it" when you could you know, explain it, and argue it.
I don't think coloring books that your inbred family made for count as actual history studies.
You are so ignorant it's not even funny. I take history courses at college. I'm currently reading "Ghengis Khan" by Harold Lamb, not as required reading, but as a hobby.
Either you two went to shitty schools or you never paid attention in history class.
History was one of my best subjects, I'd chalk it up to shitty schools.
