I was the third one he spoke to. They had all said the same thing, ‘George, you should just do it!’” “Nobody wanted to follow that act, I don’t think, at that point. That was an honor, but it would’ve been just too daunting.”
Source: Entertainment Weekly. So we could've gotten another professional's hand to guide the prequels and potentially follow the footsteps of Empire, but they felt Lucas was equipped to handle it or weren't prepared themselves. What a shame.
So we also have Zemekis, Spielberg and Howard to blame for the prequels.
“He didn’t necessarily want to direct them"
Probably shouldn't have...
"Now the story of a Jedi family who lost everything, and the Chosen One who tore them apart."
Would have been better if they he hired a new script writer.
Would have been better if they he hired a new script writer.
George Lucas is the most qouatable director of all time.
Would have been better if they he hired a new script writer.
Well, it seems like George Lucas having to sacrifice some control and show some humility is something that helped make 4-6 something special. Gaining more control and over-confidence is something that probably hindered the first, and spite and hurt is something that probably carried into the next two. Dunno. It's probably gotta be hard to admit fucking up really bad on something that people loved so dearly.
Nah we should of negotiated with the aliens to give the real George back. Look at his quotes in the 70's-80's, back then he spoke out against editing old films to add color or changing them because it was part out of history.
They should have asked M. Night Shymalan
George Lucas is the most qouatable director of all time.
Jar-Jar is the key to all this.
They should have asked M. Night Shymalan
If for whatever reason the whole Jar Jar thing turns out to be real, M. Night Shyamalan might as well have directed them.
I kind of feel bad for George if this means what I think it means. This makes it seem like he knew he wasn't the guy to direct the movies, but everyone else thought he was. Now everyone thinks he ruined the prequels when in reality he was forced into a role he knew he would not excel at.

He didn't want to to direct ESB and RoTJ (and he ultimately didn't). I've read that he knew his dialogues sucked when writing the original movie. It would make sense for him to be aware of his lacking abilities as a director and writer.
george lucas asked david lynch to direct return of the jedi now imagine that, lol
So we also have Zemekis, Spielberg and Howard to blame for the prequels.
I think "Nobody wanted to follow that act" is a polite way to say no one wanted to take orders from Lucas. You see this even now, such as with the MCU. When the person in charge says "This is the way the movie needs to be made" no top director is going to take that job. A top notch director wants creative control, a hack is willing to come in, follow orders, and just collect a paycheck. Imagine the nightmare of trying to make your mark on the Star Wars franchise with Lucas micromanaging everything. It you can find other work, you're better off doing so. Empire Strikes Back was made back when it was possible for other people to put their input into the series, those days were long over by the time they made Ep 1.
Jar-Jar is the key to all this.
He's the funniest character we've ever had. Also, never forget
