Gabe Newell Officially Confirms That A Next-Gen Valve Engine Is In Development
I wonder if it's going to be fully next-gen, but that also worries me since I think part of Source's draw is that people with older or weaker computers could still play with moderate performance. Hopefully we won't get totally cast out and forced to buy a new computer for the new era of Source, but I guess it's logical at this point.
(Gabe please don't get require Shader model 3.0 I beg you, I need my games :( )
They'll design it with that in mind but you can only go so far back before you start to look stupid for doing it.
Like how they held onto DX8 for so long.
Shooting while suit-zoom never made it to the release it seems..

But damn that was nostalgic
bind "z" "toggle_zoom"
I don't think they'd release it with any game other than HL3. It's their flagship, it's what they've used to push out every previous engine and I think it's probably the best choice in terms of generating the most interest by packaging both a new engine and a long-awaited game together
Just an FYI to some people Garry will never make a second Gmod i.e. source 2 will never have Gmod running on it.

The Source one will still work fine, presumably.
Still think it's more likely the Episode Three is release on the current engine, with Half Life 3 on the next.
Has there been anything relating to why the next Half Life game will be title wise? Feel free to prove the theory wrong.
I sure hope it's Ricochet Source

And you came to that conclusion how?
just the thought of a faster workflow in hammer gives me a hard-on
real time vrad would be a dream come true
I would probably start mapping again if hammer was overhauled.

I'll better to start learning source 2 then :v:
And you came to that conclusion how?
Gmod is still based on 2004 content :v:
/v/ did a nice job of making such a awesome birthday present for Gabe :v:
I sure hope it's Ricochet Source
Sure, they'll make Ricochet Source on their next engine.
I mainly hope the new engine will have physics that's at-least a LITTLE BIT more realistic than the last one.
I wanna make complex moving contraptions in Gmod without it all spazzing out dammit.
Sure, they'll make Ricochet Source on their next engine.
Because obviously they can't call their next engine Source 2 or something right :downs:
Wonder why Gabe decided to tell /v/ this information but not anyone else?
Wonder why Gabe decided to tell /v/ this information but not anyone else?
because this is pretty much how information gets passed around in valve's world
like they dont make press releases, they just tell someone that happens to be there a tidbit of something to come
also they gave him a hat so hes obligated
Wonder why Gabe decided to tell /v/ this information but not anyone else?
Perhaps no one ever asked him kindly.
I'm glad to see that Gabe Newell seems to be losing so much weight. He really looks great in that video.
I just want a higher polygon budget, it's just so frustrating when I try to compile something and I get that damn error.
Isn't the limit 64k tris per model? That's overkill for a single model, are you doing something wrong?

Now that I'm thinking about this, I'm a little bit worried now. Older Source games are seriously starting to show their age, yet newer ones like Alien Swarm and Portal 2 look great by current standards, and that's what scares me.
Because this generation of consoles has been around as long as it has, using the same hardware, PC gamers haven't had much reason to upgrade, I'm guessing you could probably play games that were released this year on 2007 hardware quite well. Though a good amount of people who are really into PC gaming probably would have upgraded since then, odds are that upgrades probably haven't really been necessary for a good 2-3 years by now.
With a lot of large PC games sharing console versions, people are using weaker hardware than I think they would be if there were more large or better-made PC titles to coax more people into upgrading.
What I'm getting at, is how well will Valve's new engine scale or age? Or more accurately, how high will the graphical ceiling be, and how long will it last as a result? Will they design the top end around what most gamers use now, or will they base it around the newest, bleeding edge tech?

I seriously doubt that source will look it's optimization for older engines and will back this up by their steam user spec reports
I'm guessing a 2007 card will likely run it well... but if you still have an o7 card you can upgrade anyways... anything older than a card from 2007 well, what the hell are you doing with one of those these days now :v: Hell even an o7 card you'd have to be crazy to own.
I can hope it'll support D11 but bet 5$ that it'll still easily support much older cards. Current source can support a lot but they don't go too far and still have older PC's run it very well.
[editline]11th November 2012[/editline]
I want far greater physics, shadows, shaders and d11. I still want heavy support for lesser end cards even though I'd be able to run it on max.
When HL1 first came out, your computer needed to be on steroids to run it properly, but thanks to that HL1 was the best and most realistic looking game at the time, same with half life 2. I want the same to happen with HL3, I want valve to push the boundries of graphics, crysis which came out 5 years ago is still one of the best looking games out there, that's just sad.
Just push it to the limit, valve.
Source 2 will be the last Source engine. :(
No. Source 2:episode 1

It's probably going to feature better linux support since valve now even resumed coding steam for linux and is pretty successful at it.
Wonder if this update will be as big as that update was from the original source :v:
I hope so
cloth physics/individual materials on models / etc
gmod will have huge sweeping updates I hope!
some source games have had cloth physics but valve never did anything with it. i know Dark Messiah had them to an extent.

Arkane studios, please make dark messiah 2 on source 2
please
or well, bethesda software, please let arkane studios make dark messiah 2 on source 2

Oh my goodness, this has just made me think about how unbelievably revolutionary the next instalment of Half-Life will be! It's crazy!
