Then why HL2 still has superior physics to any 2012 game?
Most big games are still developed for consoles first, and with consoles needing every bit of power, if physics isn't integral to the gameplay it's not important enough to need to be detailed.
Then why HL2 still has superior physics to any 2012 game?
Name one game that has "superior" physics?
It depends entirely on what we define as "superior". I love the feel of detail in Source's physics implementation, but it has always had the drawback that it doesn't scale well. Mass physics has been done much better in other games without item freezing and FPS-flooring.
Source really doesn't handle stacking and mass physics very well due to using a really old version of Havok. In Source, if you stack say 50 boxes on top of eachother, and force the top one down, what happens? Everything starts stuttering, and the boxes freeze for a while, then they suddenly start flying in random directions in an almost explosive manner. In better physics engines, things don't freeze.
Name one game that has "superior" physics?
Most games doesn't even have physics or they are very laggy. Skyrim is good example of shitty physics.
Consoles can't handle it.
Except HL2 was ported to consoles, and there was no difference in the physics system. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline]
He got some mid range previous gen gpu, don't know about his cpu. I can probably stack 100-250 boxes before it starts to go down.
I actually really doubt that. Go test it out in Gmod while measuring the FPS. Source does not handle stacking very well.
called it. I'm excited
Remember the video with all the crows flying around, with the HL2 HUD, posted by an animator who left Valve? That one unlisted video on YouTube? :0 Maybe that was Source 2
The only reason that loading times were so frequent in levels was because of source limits. Assuming that they've increased it, levels will be much much larger and won't have to switch so often.
This is because Source loads everything into memory when it starts a map, which is why it becomes a huge problem when you add more entities, or bigger maps. Modern engines just load everything dynamically as you go, which allows for huge maps and low memory usage. My hope for the new engine is that it's more dynamic in that sense, rather than just increasing the limits.
Finally! Here's hoping for a demo of it soon (though I doubt it.)

Damn that video looks awkward

hl3.exe has stopped working
I just hope they improve hammer so it doesn't look and feel like it belongs in 2004.
equally good or better modding support and a low graphics mode that runs on toasters, please
This is because Source loads everything into memory when it starts a map, which is why it becomes a huge problem when you add more entities, or bigger maps. I really hope to see some amazing post processing effects and breathtaking shaders. Also some sort of new technology involving physics. Maybe euphoria engine maybe destructable environments? I hope they really make it ahead of it's time because that is what valve is about, raising the bar. So things like bokeh DoF, per object motion blur, maybe dynamic water cloth and particle physics. an improved face poser system. Anything like that, I want something to blow my mind, I want somthing that makes cryengine 3 a little bitch.
God I am so ready for this, it's been so long.

That, plus wonderful post process effects. If they don't do it to the amount SS3 had that'll be somewhat disappointing I think :v:
Link?
He's talking about this. It's pretty silly to think that might be Source 2 though, since it's nothing but a AI/graphics demo. Not to mention it would be incredibly dumb for a developer (ex or not) to leak something like Source 2.

Serious Sam 1 was breathtaking for it's time. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline]
i doubt he'll mind, he'll make another few millions off of it
Plus I bet it will give fp studios something big to do right? I mean...Do they work on any other games besides Gmod? I haven't heard of facewound in years. Jesus that shit is terrible, who seriously thought that was an ok thing to accept within a graphics engine? It's really bad in some cases on certain UE3 games that haven't been modified too much.
Croteam has always made amazing engines for being a small studio with not a very large budget. Serious Sam 1 was breathtaking for it's time.
And considering this fact and the leap Valve made with HL1 to hl2 in what 5 years? Theoretically the new engine, assuming they're willing to make such a leap, will be a massive one. I mean look at what Croteam does with their budget now look at Valve massive budget.

The main menu features a pretty, high-resolution model of Alice (displaying what dress is equipped), and for a short moment after loading the asset streaming makes her look like an abomination from the depth of hell :v:
I hope they don't do forced post processing like CSGO. Takes shitloads of gpu processing and does nothing but horrible blur.
Name one game that has "superior" physics?
Crysis
Crysis
That's pretty and all, but it leaves me wondering whether it's more realistic than source.
Crysis
Note that the game in the video actually runs at ~0.125 frames per second :P The recorder just captures each frame and creates a video running at normal speed. I've seen people do something similar in GMod.
That's pretty and all, but it leaves me wondering whether it's more realistic than source.
They both use Havok for their physics engine. Same thing, maybe the CE version is just a bit more optimized.
Crysis
That's really far from realtime though.
