"Realism" is cancer of game industry.
No. The idea of realistic games is what drives technology forward.
No. Unless its like get hit by one bullet and die instantly.
Photorealism is naturally something to strive for, but problems tend to occur when you try to achieve realism in the gameplay department. A game feature geared towards creating realism often gets in the way of the fun because realism can't be emulated properly due to the limits of the human-machine interfaces. You might code a movement system that precisely simulate human motion with leg movement, terrain response etc, but it's gonna end feeling unnatural because the player can't connect properly to the little details you spent ages coding. Meanwhile, a movement system that looks very unrealistic on paper might end up feeling more natural than the "realistic" one because its simplification helps minimize the difference between player thought and in-game action. The most fun and successful games are rarely the ones that provide the most realistic emulation of reality. So yes, I'd say that the strive for realism is inherently backwards in many cases.
Why
Because I can. It's because I need it for RAM previews in a program called Nuke by the Foundry and After Affects. [editline]14th November 2012[/editline]
Wouldn't a voxel based model be really blocky and ugly?
No, haven't you ever seen a zBrush model? The trouble comes when you try to get animation working, they need to crack that.
No. The idea of realistic games is what drives technology forward.
Er? In the visual and artificial intelligence departments yes, everywhere else "realism" can just about fuck off. Imagine a game where your character got tired, needed to sleep for half of your play time, needed to eat, excrete and do all the other boring things we get up to in our lives on a daily basis. Think about GTA4. While the game was excellent, who actually enjoyed the socialising bit? No one I know did, because even though it was "realistic" it was boring as shite. Games need to stop attempting to be realistic. If I want realism, I'll live my life. As it happens, when I play video games I want to blow away aliens using mega plasma cannons, and I don't want to have to walk everywhere and suffer from back pain.
stalker did realism right but anything past that is a no go
It's not that it feels realistic, it's that it feels like you have full control and pinpoint accuracy. There's no delay in the movement, no camera bob or latency to confuse you, no mouse smoothing and the amount of "friction" in the horizontal movement is perfect. The movement system is very solid and reliable, enabling very precise control without thinking.
This is what I mean. Source is almost perfect in this regard. You feel so in control, I know exactly how the heavy or the scout is going to move, I know how to do expert jumps as Gordon, Portal 2's movement is so slick. I love it. I've never felt as comfortable moving in the environment in any other game than I have in source. I don't need gimmicky headbobbing or camera sway or first person legs to tell me that I'm moving.
on the subject of player movement, i think Crysis and Crysis Warhead are some real champs in that department, with enough practice, movement becomes 90% of the reason you get kills, at least online meanwhile in cod4 simple bunny hopping is frowned upon, something that makes no god damn sense because you become less of a target, i call this the lazy butthurt effect. When people suck and blame skilled players for their noobness
Huh. I thought he totally shot down everybody's dreams for a new engine when he talked about it concerning Portal 2.
I really hope they don't wait for the next console gen to announce it. PCs are able to handle it now and they can port it over to the ps4 and xbox whatever later.
I really hope they don't wait for the next console gen to announce it. They are pretty devoted to us PC gamers.
"Realism" is cancer of game industry.
Cancer? Realism (especially in movement) is incredibly important for feeling immersed in a game that's not in a realistic setting. Games feel and play so much better when your character is like an extension of your body rather than a controller in your hands.
Euphoria is an animation engine.
w/e, i mean the type of character physics gta iv has
Maybe they are waiting for the next gen consoles so their game doesnt have to look shit to work on current consoles.
Maybe they are waiting for the next gen consoles so their game doesnt have to look shit to work on current consoles.
Thats highly unlikely cause of their steambox coming out soon. They will not put a game on the competion's console. (User was banned for this post ("Stupid and pointless bump" - Swebonny))
Hey bro, check the date of the last post before you make an idiotic bump.
Fuck that bump my heartbeat skipped for a second there
Fuck that bump my heartbeat skipped for a second there
Lucky you, it ONLY skipped. Does anyone know where I can buy myself a defib?
They will not put a game on the competion's console.
They don't see the Steambox as competition to consoles, the steam box is their opening the gates to console players who want to get into PC gaming with ease, and to the gamers who want PC gaming in their living room with ease.
Thats highly unlikely cause of their steambox coming out soon. They will not put a game on the competion's console.
1. Their project is called Bigfoot 2. It's not a console, it's an open PC what they are developing. 3. They WILL still make multiplatform titles. 4. Not even one single game by Valve will be exclusive to anything. It's not possible due to Steam, so a exclusive title to their Mini-PC won't happen, so yes, their games will run on the new consoles as well. 5. It's doubtful that their Mini-PC will arrive in 2013.
Lucky you, it ONLY skipped. Does anyone know where I can buy myself a defib?
Do you even know how defibrillators work?
Do you even know how defibrillators work?
You pick them up, right?
You pick them up, right?
you go over to the dead person and depending what model defib you have, you press or hold down the button that'll apper in mid air till he's alive again
I thought something seemed off when I came across a post by myself on the first page that I don't remember making :v:
i was banned a day before this was posted, it feels like i was in a coma
I hope it retains the clarity of Source. Some engines end up being very visually noisy with all the effects and shaders they throw in, small but important details become difficult to pick up on. Source was one of those engines where everything was crystal clear.

I wonder what it will be called. I hope they keep with their valve related naming theme.
Even if this is old(ish) news, I'm glad they're not leaving Source dead in the water and closing their doors on the industry since they said a while ago that once their tech tuckers out they'd be shutting down. Here's hoping for dev tools that are a little more user friendly and far more expanded engine limits; it really saddens me to see all the great mods that have gone to different engines, like Ivan's Secrets and Empires Mod.
Given that Source hasn't had a major update in years and the fact that it still manages to look very good on average systems kind of guarantees that we're in for some exciting shit with Source 2 (or whatever they choose to name their new engine). I'd say with the experience Valve has with the modding community they're gonna make sure their tools work properly from the start this time around.
