US warns surgically implanted bombs may be used to target airlines
Well it is a possible risk.
I don't really understand why it is necessary to inform people of this unless they plan to develop something that can scan for these devices.
All informing the public does at the moment is create unnecessary panic.
It's a possible scenario that a strong lightning strike hits the plane and takes out an engine, probably still has bigger chance of happening than this, but you don't see people not fly in case that happens.
by surgically implanted do they mean up the butt
No, they probably mean "cut open, place bomb in abdominal cavity, sew up."

Planes are designed to take lightning strikes.

To a certain limit, and only the hull is protected afaik, not the wings.
Easily detectable if you can get people to take clothes off in security screening.
Somehow I don't think terrorists are good at the whole idea of making stitches on someone's body not look suspicious.

Also, wouldn't the bomb being in someone's body weaken the potential force of the explosion?
This is why the security mentality of the TSA and anything else related to airport/transit security is absolutely retarded. We didn't have to start taking off our shoes until some guy made a shoe-bomb; they enacted the security measure AFTER the threat method had been used. We didn't have to start making sure not to bring anything that could be considered a weapon until AFTER some guy tried to use a can-opener or a pencil or some shit to stab somebody. We didn't have to start going through some invasive scanner or get pat-downs that people may be uncomfortable with until AFTER somebody made some kind of hidden bomb in a location that could only be found through these "security measures."
They need to start thinking AHEAD of the terrorists/threats/whatever instead of being behind, since honestly when was the last time there was a report of people trying to get away with shoe-bombs, water bottle stabbings, or vagina-bombs? It's safe to assume that yes, they're going to come up with some other security measure to make every single airline traveler go through that will check for these belly-bombs. The practicality of enacting such a security measure, now that we've made it publicly known to anybody willing to try it that we're aware of the possibility of these things being used, is honestly lacking in my opinion.
I'm not worried. Reasons;
1. Who's going to be the dumb shit to try to operate on a guy, insert a bomb big enough to do damage, and fix him to the point of keeping him alive?
2. I don't think Al-Qaeda can even afford doctors.
Also, wouldn't the bomb being in someone's body weaken the potential force of the explosion?
Yeah, not much of a bang if you do this.
Plenty of splatter though, I'd say.

That's why they kidnap them.

Well you would have someone that looks sickly that would be in excruciating pain going up to the terminal so even that makes the scenario less likely.

not to mention who knowingly walks up into an airport, and DOESN'T get caught by being twitchy... and I must also note the stitches.

That's pretty much what they are trying to do.
It's easy to blame someone for not realizing something after it happened but would you honestly think that someone might use a pencil to attack someone if no event of it ever occurred before?
The TSA is in a rather shitty position of having to deal with what can occur and balancing that with justification for what they ban.

Aren't suicide bombers notorious for using painkillers beforehand?

I have no words for this.
Fuck my friend is in a plane(probably) heading over to Florida to visit.
:suicide:
Quick, get x-ray's installed at every airport.
Things have been slow lately, I guess the government wanted to drum up a bit of fear.
I'm almost nostalgic for the days of arbitrary color-coded alerts to keep us afraid.
Reminds me of Brink and the cortex bomb....

terrists gon' getcha
Let's find a mean of justifying our unnecessary organization that has no impact on safety by exploiting fear to give people the impression that such procedures are making you safer.
The story is just unrealistic and is just a means of fear based coercion to put up with imagined dangers, which is in itself: terrorism.
Put a block of C4 and a detanator in a vacuum sealed bag, and implant it the same way you would a Pacemaker or something similar.
This has MythBusters written all over it.
Now we wait for the story of somebody who gets their pacemaker torn out of their chest by the TSA.

especially when the first sentence of the article sounds like you could have a bomb implanted in you by terrorists and never even realise it happened
If it was a serious threat they wouldn't be fucking warning the public about it.
That, or the TSA is the most incompetent agenc....
We're doomed.
Heh, now the TSA is denying what they said and are claiming that Terrorists might use it to assassinate specific targets by getting close and exploding.
Did they finally realize how little damage a body bomb could do?
TSA is just WAY to sensitive. I bet if the US pulled out of other countries and they loosened the security everything might be OK.
Yeah let's give the terrorists more room to maneuver that'll work
Looks more like an excuse for the TSA to continue groping people as they please, rather than an actual threat.
I have a feeling the announcement is just a bullshit warning intended to raise funding/support for TSA or why else would they publicly announce it?
Yeah let's give the terrorists more room to maneuver that'll work
Considering my dad is able to get on planes with a flip knife no issue, I'd say TSA isn't doing it right.
Looks more like an excuse for the TSA to continue groping people as they please, rather than an actual threat.
they'll cut a hole in you and grope your god damn kidneys
and you thought cavity searches were bad

But the government must be transparent!
So now the TSA is going to start asking people to take the metal rods in their hip out to check for a bomb?
It doesn't seem that much more ridiculous than checking an old lady's diaper thinking the piss in it was a bomb. They'll just keep a couple of on-site surgeons, do a quick operation while the rest of the people in line watch, and sew 'em back up. Sure, that could be a little embarrassing, but it's for the safety of us all.
I'd just like to give a friendly reminder that the TSA has never caught a single terrorist. They have all been spotted by civilians.
