That is the single most adorable insect ever.
That is so awesome! I love gigantism!
First, females have those "spikes". I'm fairly sure it's what they use to lay their eggs. So, no, it's not a deadly weapon meant to sting the hands of curious humans. Fear-mongering.
Second, crickets have wings. They simply don't fly using them, they glide. Wings =/= Flight.
Under the layer of chitinous exowings, they store their actual wings. Although wetas don't seem to have wings, true...
Then what is the sword for? Don't tell me it's used for penetration? Oh god.
And yes I know crickets have wings and use them to glide, but why is the article mentioning wing span when this thing doesn't have wings.
So it's a huge ass cricket? I guess it's jaws can bite quite hard knowing the green ones already sting and they're so much smaller than this.
Oh it's missing wings, strange
Do you really want giant, flying crickets? Do you?
Kill every single one of them.
Entomophobia represent.
except you know this is pretty much one of the last few of it's kind so you're essentially dooming another species to extinction
think of it's feelings
Read the article, please.
Mice are different from rats though. Even snakes can lose to a rat, while a mouse is no problem for them.
This could be an awesome pet.
Remember all those nukes important countries are storing
they could do some good in New Zealand right now
Maybe thats what they want to get even bigger...
It looks like Jiminy Cricket.
Give him/her a tophat and a suit and it will be awesome.
I don't want to be biten by one of those :tinfoil:
Oh good god fuck me sideways and call me Mugabe kill it with fire
In my opinion the bigger the bug the better. Larger things seem less threatening, I'd have these guys everywhere over tiny bugs any day
You'd really want them to be EVERYWHERE?
I think it looks friendly :v:
Something about insects just urks me. I think its their (or me perceiving) unpredictability.
Like what the hell is this giant thing gonna do if I touch it?
It looks cool but if I saw one in real life, I'd probably flip the fuck out and run like crazy
Do you really want giant, flying crickets? Do you?
Shooting crickets with a rifle like birds.
DO WANT

those of you asking about the wings; they're tucked into the carapace. 98% of insects have wings, with the exception of most ants (but the species does have an airborne bunch)
It looks like it has a huge stinger on it's butt, unless that's like a mini tail or something.
That's her ovipositor, which is used to deposit eggs.
I find a lot more prettier then small fucking bugs.
Looks like a lobster or a crayfish, probably tastes like one too.
It's kinda cute-looking.
Why does the article say it's a new discovered species when it's been known of since Europeans settled New Zealand?
http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-006-j
Although it was meant to be funny, that totally didn't feel like a good SCP article.
Yet another thing i can not unsee.
Did starship troopers come to mind for anybody else?
It looks like it has a huge stinger on it's butt, unless that's like a mini tail or something.
It's a female, so it's probably an ovipositor.
For laying eggs in your brain. :v:
Awesome! Too bad they are so endangered I would love to see one of these up close and personal. I have seen some big bugs but this takes it to a whole other level.
Somehow they look less scary when they're that big, how does that even work? :downs:
How adorable.
