the action, I stated, was racist. I'm considering that to be different from calling someone "a racist" because of what defining someone as "a racist" implies. I haven't been clear about that, my bad. [editline]22nd November 2011[/editline] I guess I'm not being clear and if so then that's a failing on my part. I'm saying that the use of it towards someone, regardless of intent or seriousness, is still using it as a racist term. Maybe you'll think that to be semantics but even if so, it matters I think.
Bobv2, consider this: If "nigger" is a racist term, even in circumstances such as you and your melanin-enhanced friend, then "bitch" is a sexist term, no? Does "racist term" necessitate that every instance of using it uses it as a "racist term"?
he's saying if you say nigger you're a dickhole and the intent doesn't matter because it's a dickhole thing to say. Holy FUCK IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME
This is where I'm running into trouble. This would support the notion that you believe the mere utterance of the word is racist.
The context I'm meaning is when used towards an individual. Not used in a discussion where it's not directed at anyone IE this thread or a dictionary or something.
Does "racist term" necessitate that every instance of using it uses it as a "racist term"?
Thank you. This is the exact point I was trying to drive home with my question, but you put it more poignantly than I.
Holy shit. Give me an answer to this question then: Is the mere utterance of the word "nigger" racist? Y/N?
No. A person I knew used to shout it when he was angry and thought he was alone. He's not racist it's just you know, that thing in your brain that when you swear you feel better.
he's saying if you say nigger you're a dickhole and the intent doesn't matter because it's a dickhole thing to say. Holy FUCK IT'S OBVIOUS TO ME
I'm afraid it's a bit more complicated than that.
No. A person I knew used to shout it when he was angry and thought he was alone. He's not racist it's just you know, that thing in your brain that when you swear you feel better.
tourettes?
Tourettes Guy came to mind.
I'm afraid it's a bit more complicated than that.
no it's not you're just looking to pick a fight over absolutely nothing because you are likely very very bored.
I have history homework sitting on my lab and OpenOffice in the background.
I have history homework sitting on my lab and OpenOffice in the background.
k that's good
no it's not you're just looking to pick a fight over absolutely nothing because you are likely very very bored.
No, I'm taking a genuine interest in learning someone's position that contradicts my own, even if I did get a bit frustrated in my last few posts because my internet is running very poorly and it caused a miscommunication. Sorry I care about other people's thoughts rather than just writing them off as stupid.

Sorry I care about other people's thoughts rather than just writing them off as stupid.
there's no miscommunication. i read his posts and it was quite obvious to me. he said that nigger was a word that's not particularly good to use because it has roots in bigotry. everything else was just your own little spiel and you should stop because i want to discuss how much fox news sucks.
I disagree. If you're tacking on a racial slur as an addition to enhance an insult, then that's changing the meaning of it.
No, because it doesn't matter what the word is. If someone calls a black man a "Stupid nigger" because he said something stupid, that person isn't saying it because he is black, but because he said something stupid and the term "nigger" happens to make the effect of the insult greater. However, if someone calls a black man a "Stupid nigger" because he is black, then the term "stupid" becomes the amplifier in that statement, and whether or not what he said was stupid, or if he even said something at all, becomes irrelevant. And how everyone else perceives the statement is upon them. If the speaker takes them in to account, then they may choose to not use the term "nigger" because the others might be offended by it and he doesn't want what basically equates to collateral damage.

I do agree that Fox News sucks.
there's no miscommunication
You obviously didn't read my posts. I said my crappy internet didn't work so I didn't see his answer when I asked for clarification, so I continued to press him for it.

I said my crappy internet didn't work so I didn't see his answer when I asked for clarification, so I continued to press him for it.
Please try to look first. I typically refresh a page before I make a post, especially if the thread is one such as this that is fast moving. Occasionally, because I take time with my posts normally, I do miss some, but I will also go back through the thread and read anything that may have been posted or changed since I last checked and respond as necessary. Its a necessary responsibility.
Yeah, but my internet is going to slow right now that someone could easily post something within the latency it takes to refresh. It's getting late here though, so I'm going to have to shove off, unless anyone has anything else to add.
No, because it doesn't matter what the word is.
yeah, it sorta does. words mean things. that's how language works
If someone calls a black man a "Stupid nigger" because he said something stupid, that person isn't saying it because he is black,
uhh yeah he is. even if he's calling an asian person a nigger the meaning of the word as an anti-black slur is still there because, let me reiterate: words mean things. the definition of the word still exists regardless of the user's intent when using the word, and the only excuse for ignoring that definition is genuine ignorance of the word's meaning. so, the way i sees it the only times a person would use the word is a: they honestly don't know what it means or b: they wholly intend to bring race into the matter. that's something even accepted by your premise of "talking to a stupid black guy" [editline]22nd November 2011[/editline]
If "nigger" is a racist term, even in circumstances such as you and your melanin-enhanced friend, then "bitch" is a sexist term, no?
actually yeah.
the relevancy of intent is utterly overstated. just because you didn't intend to use nigger as a racist insult doesn't change the fact that it is a racist insult. nigger is an ethnic slur for black people. if you're not using it to bring racist connotations what are you using it for? when you say stupid nigger, you're using nigger as an insult and nigger is just a harsher word for black people so the connotation of that word becomes black = bad. using it ironically is a different story but that becomes a matter of perspective. context and syntax is much more relevant. saying nigger when reading a mark twain novel isn't racist, it's just reading it. calling someone a stupid nigger is using racist language to insult people, the intent doesn't matter. [editline]22nd November 2011[/editline] it's evident of the white cultural lens. you don't understand the connotation of the word because it has never been used against you. it doesn't matter if you didn't intent to be racist, calling me a kike is nothing more than an insult because you are using a racist insult.
First is pizza a veggie, then pepperspray is a food product? IQ -90
The meaning and implications of all words comes from how they are used, the intentions behind them, the context, these such matters. So if the conditions, intentions, context, and such change then the meaning and implications behind the word changes to match. If someone else perceives it in a way that was not in accordance with the way the speaker presents it, that does not fall on the speaker. Its just a misunderstanding. Look around Facepunch and you'll see plenty of examples of people misunderstanding what another user has said. As I said earlier, there is no racism motivating it or implied, it is just a word selected not for its meaning but for the effect it will have. It would not matter if they were black or white. If calling them a "purple lightbulb" or a "fast giraffe" or anything else would work, then they would most likely be used. It makes no difference if the word is "nigger" or "light bulb" or "giraffe" because what the word actually is or means is entirely irrelevant. And one last thing, while I may not have experience with being called "nigger" I'm not immune to the prejudices of people. I'm gay and furthermore transgender, so I have had to deal with my own share of problems. I have German heritage and Irish heritage, so I get shit for that. Its not a good thing when at eight years old you have no friends and get called a Nazi by everyone in class. Or getting called a fag and ignored by pretty much everyone, often times teachers even, in middle school for being gay. Or in high school, being told that you'd be expelled if you told anyone that you're gay. Hell, I even get called a bitch because I'm transgender.
Pepper spray's active ingredient is capsaicin, the chemical that makes red peppers hot. So technically it is true. Sort of.
I knew a person who diluted pepper spray and he used it on his food. Crazy bastard made us try his food one day, My body was not ready.
Experience the rich flavor of fire. Your taste buds will oxidize right out of your mouth with sheer joy.
Let's spray pure capsaicin in her face, it's just food.
I think we'll just use words however we want to and holy fuck this thread derailed into something retarded
yes it does. you couldn't create a language in which no words have any definitions and meaning is conveyed only by intention and context because that would be a language of gibberish. because any concept more complex than what can be expressed through nonverbal methods like facial expressions and tone would be incommunicable. im a descriptivist but a language in which anything can mean anything is useless because then nothing means anything
I normally just use bitch if I am insulting a woman and bastard if I am insulting a man. Their actual meanings may be different but no one really thinks about them when they are being used as a derogatory comment. To me at least, when used as an insult in this sort of context, it is just to identify them as a woman, not to insult her because she is a woman.
but what's the point of identifying them as a woman if not to, in some way, tie their womanhood to your insult?
So it's A-OK I call women for bastards? Well you're the boss.
