On the topic of Christmas being parallel to Saturnalia, back in the time of Rome, when Christians were persecuted, they decided to have Christian holidays during Roman holidays because the Romans were less likely to point spears at them, and it wouldn't look unnatural to see them celebrating along with everyone else. Which is why a lot of Saturnalia has merged with a lot of Christian holidays after the fall of Rome.
On the thread topic, what the pope is saying is true, Christians are supposed set an example, and not indulge in the world, yet so many are hypocrites, and don't bother helping people, or doing just as sinful things as other people.
Also in Jesus' time you had the Pharisees, who were the religious leaders at that time. Jesus called them a "synagogue of satan" They were outwardly religious and holy, but inwardly full of hate, and they eventually encouraged the people to kill Jesus because he revealed what they truly were. It's not about how good you are, it's about whether you are saved or not, because in reality, we blow it all the time, we are not perfect, we all need to recognize that, and accept Jesus. I'm not saying Christians are perfect, because they aren't, but we shouldn't practice sin.

being a bad person isn't a pagan thing. being a hedonist isn't even a bad thing.
how can it not matter how good you are if you're saved? that's a total excuse to not be a good person because you even pointed out, it won't/doesn't matter unless you are saved.
Not to mention, in the very few threads about religious groups actually doing good things, there are always atheists who fill the thread with reasons why religion is still bad, how no amount of good it does will ever change that
But even then that isnt being directly insulting to a believer for no reason.
for example: pointing out in a thread where everyone is praising a religious organisation's name for being wonderful to people, that the very same organisation still discriminates against homosexuals and women etc etc, is completely different from
"oh yeah, well ur a fat virgin because this meme said so once haha hows the pony collection doin'?".

Well, to start with, I don't recall ever having said anything to that effect, and I apologize if I have. But yes, it kind of is the same thing. If a religious group has done something good, it is completely unnecessary and hostile to bring up negative actions committed by people who follow the same ideology, especially when most of these accusations are biased and unfounded to begin with.
