She was freaking 8 years old.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be difficult to get back, that's true regardless of age. My only concern is that the Mirror are exaggerating the story by making it seem like she was walking constantly. It's still a remarkable story
Damn, that's a lot of walking.
respect
7 years of travelling, starting out at the tiny age of 8... Her tale is one that may hopefully one day be told in full. There might be trauma involved, but nonetheless Wati's story would certainly be one of survival and travelling.
She's spent almost half her life trying to find home. Wow. Thread music:
Got to wonder why no one helped her.
This girl is the most badass badass.
The horrors she must have experienced....
"The 15-year-old, known as Wati, was eight when the giant wave hit her village of Ujong Baroh, in West Aceh, on Boxing Day in 2004."
Wow, sorry...I can't believe I missed that.
Why did it need to mention it happened during boxing day...
Because that's when the tsunami happened?
I think this even beats the time record of those cats that show up in different countries after their owners move
Even for an 8 year old, surely it wouldn't have taken her 7 years to find a town or something and ask for help?
She may have never left the villlage before or have even known its name
That's right, kids. This woman just proved why you never give up.
To be fair, Rick Astley most likely gave her the idea.
Story's like this make me feel warm inside :smith:
Badass. Seriously mind blown.
The horrors she must have experienced....
On the bright side... She now has strong legs! Right?
On the bright side... She now has strong legs! Right?
Not if she spent most (or all) of that time being malnourished and barely being able to support herself, not counting any physical injuries like accidents or dealing with criminals/opportunists.
Am i the only one that wonders how it could possible take 7 fucking years to find your own home even if you're only 8?
Am i the only one that wonders how it could possible take 7 fucking years to find your own home even if you're only 8?
Man I can't find my suburb without a map sometimes, that shit ain't easy!
I can't even imagine the parents' reaction when she turned up.
Why do I have to choose between a win and a heart rating? And for that matter, how come I'm only limited to giving it one?
You get washed away by a tsunamaimi when your'e ate and get knocked unconsious, then wake up not nowing were the fuck you are. Probably hookup with a bunch of people at a tsunaminami aid camp or something. You're so busy just surviving you don't think about anything else. Then one day you're old enough to go on an adventure- the long walk home. In the movie version she will have a plucky dog as a companion.
First time I've felt good after reading something in a long time.
7 years? How far away was she swept by the tsunami?
Because that's when the tsunami happened?
or you could just give a date you know?

Because Aceh is a horrible place to live.
You're seriously fucking dense if you can't see how trying to find your home which is potentially miles away, without even being able to remember anyones name, and being 8 years old, could take 7 years to accomplish. She's lucky she even lived. Not everything is some made-up conspiracy.
I'm so confused... How did the tsunami get her so far away that she had no idea where she was and could fill up 7 years worth of searching? Secondly, this might sound silly but have you seen Indonesia? It's not a very big country relatively. I just don't understand/ believe that she was really searching for all that time.
Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands. In a tsunami it wouldn't be absurd that she ended up on another. There are dozens of languages throughout the islands and not all are mutually intelligible, so if she ended up somewhere that didn't speak whatever is spoken in her West Aceh village then it would be really fucking hard to know which way to go home, especially at age eight. That's not to mention the fact that Aceh is a pretty fucked up place with lots and lots of crime, violence etc.
Especially when you're 7.
