jesus, how can you live in the USA, right now its planned to bring the minimum wage in ontario up to 10.75
Yay there are going to be some advancements for the min wage workers, now they will be able to afford to be self sufficient to certain extent.
I'm not sure about Michigan, but usually if you don't make minimum wage with tips, your employer has to make up for it. Also, in most cases, I think waitresses and bartenders make a lot more than minimum with tips. Either way, it's still pretty bullshit that employers can use tips as a cop out to not pay their workers a decent wage.
why? no other job gets tips so it makes sense that working as a waiter and getting tips makes up the difference between their low wage and minimum wage. if you want them to be paid at least minimum wage, then the tipping culture would die, as it has in most non-american countries.
Minimum wage is 10.25 here, should be 15.00
a large jump like that would be disastrous

This will be sorta cool I guess. I make $7.40/hr here at Radioshack and I get a 2% commission on top of that, which after sales, equates to about $8.50 to $9. If they raise the minimum wage to $9.50, I'd be making about $11 after sales... that is if they don't reduce our commission because of this.
I found the website you can sign the petition on. http://www.raisemichigan.com/splash [editline]11th February 2014[/editline] Also every decent factory in my area in Michigan hires workers from temp agencies @ $9.50/hr and after 30 day they get a .50 cent raise. It's pretty much standard and the large manufacturing factories in my town handle it easily.
i find the tipping culture so strange. it's really circular. people have terrible wages, so everybody tips. why not just have better wages and less tipping?
managers and owners save money this way [editline]11th February 2014[/editline] it's really dumb
Minimum wage is 10.25 here, should be 15.00
Probably worth noting that 10.25CAD is 9.30USD.
It seems FP is warming up to the idea of a higher minimum wage. I remember in the thread about the California minimum wage going up it was like the Doom Paul meme all over again.
... You do realize how absurd of a statement that was, right?
what why that's exactly what tipping does. it shifts the cost of labor from the restaurant to the customers. tipping is pretty much exclusively an american thing, you don't tip in other countries.
I only ever tip taxi drivers and thats only because I'm scared they'll shank me if I don't. But tipping is pretty rare here outside of inner city restaurants and bars.
cost of living is cheaper in the states
Depends on the area. Most of the US has a living wage of 11-16$/hr. Some cities go as high as 22$/hr.
a large jump like that would be disastrous
Sad thing is you're right, sure larger places would have no problem with it, but small places would collapse or fire half their staff
i find the tipping culture so strange. it's really circular. people have terrible wages, so everybody tips. why not just have better wages and less tipping?
my dad is a banquet waiter in a fancy hotel in the city, his actual job gets him 80,000 a year but with tips he gets 200,000. Really it depends on who is tipping you, but dealing with the drunk rich they tend to tip alot.
a large jump like that would be disastrous
The minimum wage itself is disastrous.
