I said nothing about Darwin in my previous post. Let's talk facts. If that guy had fallen 3 feet and just bonked his head, everyone would be laughing at his dumbass. In fact that's why the announcers were laughing about it because that's exactly what they thought happened. But because he dies in front of his kid suddenly he's not a dumbass? Sure it's an accident, he didn't mean to commit suicide. But damn, people are making it sound like the ballpark is a deathtrap. Random people aren't just falling over the side for no reason. These people are doing risky behaviors that include misusing the safety equipment(in this case the railing). You can die from simply falling to the ground. Liam Neeson's wife died from a simple fall from a standing position, no extra height off the ground required.
i hate you like literally you are everything bad with people on Facepunch, no empathy or understanding of jack shit in the outside world. You just think that you can pass judgement from your seat because you read a bunch of stories on shit and found the reason why they died and thought it was "dumb" or something, and then you complain and say that they deserved it, or were dumbasses, sure maybe they did make a mistake, but so fucking what? Don't act like you've never made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes, and some mistakes can mean their life, as in this case...And here you are being an idiot.
The crazy thing is that the fan that just died was a fire man, and the other fan that fell a year ago was also a fire man.
i could see why he got rowdy, the closest thing they have to a TV in those fire stations is a black and white 12 inch tv
This is what America has come to: There are railings to keep people from falling to their death. The railing is so effective, the only way you can fall over it and die is if you actually deliberately stretch your body far out over the railing, which this guy did(I saw the video). So the solution is not "Use this video to remind the idiots to stay behind the railings", it's "Let's put nets on the other side to catch people too stupid to keep from going over the side". Look at him, the dummy is STILL holding the ball! It's not like he could use his hands right now is it?
Obviously his fault when the railing was so low that even in a not awkward position he could fall from catching a ball
catching a baseball is a tradition. it's not dumb, it's fun and the dad was probably going to give his son the ball so that he would have something to remember that day by. you have to be severely socially inept to put any blame on the father
Yes, but that has absolutely nothing to do with it. That's like saying when a guy falls to his death off of a bridge "Have you ever driven over a bridge". There are rails for a reason, you don't hang over them. Why people are stupid enough to do that is beyond me, but at least they're nice enough to remove themselves from the gene pool.
Hey, hey, hey. Guess what Fuck you.
Watched the clip from the video at least 20 times until I worked out where the guy was, couldn't see shit in the video
Ya know, even if they implement the bouncy castles or cushioned flooring, a fall like this man's would still be liable to break their neck and kill them. Well, can't prevent everything, but at least we can try.

Jesus, his kid's trying to save him. :(

You are an asshole. The father was taking his son to a tradition, trying to have fun with him, and doing what happens at every single baseball game, hence the tradition. This shows he's a good father, but is that good enough for you? He was trying to have fun with his kid, and he's a dumbass. No, that is fucking unacceptable. Look at the picture I posted, again. You'll see the guy who tried to catch him, he's in white with a cap. He also has a glove. Look at how HE tried to catch a souvenir- he's bracing himself AGAINST the railing, not over it. He wedged his underarms on the rail, and extended his arms. And, from what it looks like in the video, he would have caught the ball too. Now look at the other guy. He was on the baseball cap guy's right side. To get the ball away from the baseball cap guy he actually extends his entire upper body over the rail, and if you watch the first part of the video you'll see that he's taller than the other guy, so he has more mass in his upper body. His 'dumbass' element is not that he wants a souvenir for his kid, who wouldn't? His dumbass action was extending the largest, heaviest part of his body, his center of gravity, out into space just so he could swipe that ball. The reaction to this story reminds me of the Ryan Dunn story. So many worshippers saying how great a guy he was, though most of those people never actually even met him. So many people resenting anyone pointing out that he was also a dumbass, a drunk who killed someone. Dying doesn't give people a pass. Keep in mind that everyone has friends and/or family, so there is always someone heartbroken left behind. I think this guy, leaving his kid behind without a father now, did not earn a "it's the stadium's fault" excuse.
But because he dies in front of his kid suddenly he's not a dumbass?
When was this fact that it happened infront of his kid ever a focus of the particular issue people are hounding you about. I feel like this situation is awkward because everybody is arguing against you right now, and your counter arguments are always going for points that don't really totally relate to why people think you're dumb.
You can die from simply falling to the ground. Liam Neeson's wife died from a simple fall from a standing position, no extra height off the ground required.
Still I'm really not understanding how this relates to anything here. She was skiing by the way, not simply standing up. There's a big difference between falling standing up and falling while you're skiing/snowboarding, and I hope you realize that. You don't need to be going LIGHT SPEED to get a head injury. When I was younger I had many seemingly minor falls that left me with dizziness for a few minutes or headaches for the rest of the day.

And I want to also point out that this man couldn't have simply falled and killed someone, so its something entirely unrelated unless your a complete moron. Not only that, but maybe he wasn't thinking about physics and gravity when he was trying to catch the ball? he was instead, trying to have a good time and trying to catch a ball. yeah, it was a dumb ass accident, but that doesn't mean the guys a dumb ass, and to think that way is medieval, atrocious and fucking psychotic. I have a feeling your going to be dicking around with your friends and end up getting your neck sliced wide open in the most dumb way possible, then your going to bleed and sputter over everyone. Something stupid like trying to stop a bike tire from spinning by using your head, or leaving a saw on then jumping back at it and falling right onto it.
When was this fact that it happened infront of his kid ever a topic of the discussion. People can die in hundreds of trillions of ways, so why Cec is pointing that you can die from simple things baffles me. No shit, really?
a human neck is delightfully frail and vulnerable.
How is that "delightful" at all?
Just from looking at the picture, if they made the rail higher, it would block the view of the front row seats, so they'd have to take out that row. But still seems worth it if it prevents accidents like these.

[editline]10th July 2011[/editline]
Accidents are accidents, dude. Nobody is dumb because they get into one. Also the stadium must be poorly designed or something, as the news article says this isn't the first time something of this nature has happened.
The times before were much higher falls (One fell off the home run porch, 35 feet, and the other fell 30 feet from the second deck.) Both of them survived though. [editline]10th July 2011[/editline]
What the fuck was they thinking when m,aking the railing that low Dont they have people that check the schematics for this kind of shit?
They're actually higher than building codes require.

I think this guy, leaving his kid behind without a father now, did not earn a "it's the stadium's fault" excuse.
I believe you missed the point. Sure, its not the stadium's fault, its mainly his fault. But the mistake he made didn't warrant death. It was a mistake anyone who really wanted to catch the ball could make. He got caught up in the moment and overextended himself. That and he probably landed the wrong way as well. You calling him a total dumbass is unjustified and shows a concerning lack of sympathy and care for human life. You can't just go "oh well I've never fell over a railing, he must be dumb". Have you ever had a good reason to put yourself over a railing? Probably not. Not many people do. Also this guys death has very little similarities to Ryan Dunns death. Completely irrelevant.
All you "put a net there" people are just encouraging idiots like this: These people are just showing off how far they'll go to get a ball. It has nothing to do with wanting it for a son or a souvenir, it's about being an attention whore. With the outcry for more safety devices they are only getting the message that this kind of behavior is okay.
