I had to do a test similar to the one they described recently.
In fact, it probably was that test.
I haven't really noticed anybody I know struggle with reading except for those who never learnt. People in my school do seem to struggle when it comes to writing things though.
I've always considered reading and writing as my best subjects in school, I never thought it was even relatively difficult in any way. I honestly can't comprehend why reading is so difficult to some people, it's just so damn easy to learn.
Also, am I the only one who gets like Hulk angry when people act proud as fuck that they never read books?
I get a bit pissed at those people too.
"HEY I'M TOO COOL FOR BOOKS, I'M PROUD OF ACTING LIKE A CRETINOUS FUCK"
I hate people who do the opposite and act like they're huge nerds when they say they actually read books
That's funny because in the first grade my reading level was about 15-16.
Heh.
I hate when people read aloud and they fail to notice or comprehend punctuation. A segment like "Sam went back outside to play with his dog. Then, his grandmother arrived." will be read like "Sam went back outside to play with his dog then. His grandmother arrived." and then the reader will be all confused, thinking that the sentence makes no sense.
That doesn't mean it's the fastest way to absorb information.
Are you listening to this entire thread via text-to-speech?
I know I can read a lot faster than most people talk, and if someone did talk that fast I would not be able to understand.
The expectations are unrealistic if they're not based on the average reading ability of 15 year olds
Yeah, how dare we try to make the next generation smarter than we were?!
I don't understand how people find reading so difficult. In secondary school I was in higher english class and half the people could barely read. I mean they were smart enough lads, just for some reason many of them found just reading to be hard.
It may not be because it's hard, but because it bores them so much they never read. Reading certainly always has bored me, I never did enjoy sitting in a chair for three hours staring at a piece of paper. I imagine with how laughably easy schoolwork is these days kids just simply don't need to read to get anywhere....much as I hated it I had no choice, so I ended up perfectly literate. I'm no scholar, but shit, I can read and write well enough to get my point across.
The education system is conservative and that's not a bad thing, but change doesn't necessarily mean deterioration.
Reading and writing is becoming more irrelevant as other media become more available.
The ability to read and write has never beem more important. So much of the world revolves around doing things online, and if you can't read you can't do things online.
Being able to read and write coherently is something nobody should be without. I don't care where you live or what you plan on doing with your life.
I've had a college level reading ability since I was like 12 :v:
It bugs the shit out of me if someone is reading out loud and gets stuck on a small, common word. Like common. Makes me wonder how they were allowed to get that far.
Especially me,as i knew to read and write since i was 3
When I was 11 I had the reading age of a 17 year old.
i can top that
first grade; 1200 something on the SRI
(aka i was reading at advanced 9th grade level)
[editline]16th November 2012[/editline]
i was in a loop (first and second grade together)
second grader: woo i got 800 did anyone get higher?
me: i got 1200
I could read before school, not saying I was "good" though.
I was the kid that carried a book-light with him so he could read in the dark school bus in the mornings.
It is pathetic to think how low the levels are now.
I remember when I was at Secondary School. In English classes, when we had to read a paragraph from a book in front of the class, every other person would spend ages trying to figure out how the next word was pronounced. I don't understand how people can get to that age and not be able to read, I remember I read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in about a week when I was 8 years old.
Yeah, I can vouch for this. Being a foreigner coming to England, being surrounded by retards when it comes to reading felt really strange.

I did a book report on the first book when I was something like 10 and nobody believed it.

They didn't believe that you had read the book?

Considering the stuff that other people came up with, you couldn't really blame them.
Wow, if thats true then my reading age has gone down from 12 years. Interesting that the english literature papers are acutally extracts from books and leaflets. I was told we might get some shakespeae in the future but im sure its not as low as this report is making it out to be.
Oh wait, is this an avarge reading age?
I can definitely testify for Australia too.
That's pretty bad.
Canada has a pretty good educational system I guess.
I had a massive reading problem back when I was around 3 to 7 years old so I had to take additional language lessons.
And now I can read and write decently, which is funny considering that many of the people in my school who didn't need additional language lessons can't even spell words like "swedish" properly.
When I was 11 I had the reading age of a 17 year old.
I think people with decent reading skills are more likely to perouse discussion forums since most of that has to do with reading/writing.
lmao even in america we have this problem
I can't tell you how many times I've had to review peer essays in college English classes by people my age or even 20 years older that were written like a lobotomized chimp wrote them
it's baffling
I read Tolkien's Trilogy in the first grade....
i was told i had the reading comprehension of a high schooler when i was in like the 3rd grade

Reading out loud is entirely different to reading to oneself. I can read and write perfectly well under most circumstances (i.e. not tired / distracted), but the second you ask me to stand up in front of a room with 20 other people and tell me to read to them? I'd just freeze up. Some people thrive at public speaking, but a hell of a lot of people are terrified of it for one reason or another (mostly it's to do with confidence).

When I was in high school one time I had to do one of those "get up and meet the rest of the class" things where people trade questionnaires about what they like. One guy wrote that his favorite food was "bekon".
bekon.
The point is, I know how you feel.
The questions are questions no 5th grader would ever learn.
actually yeah, when I was in 5th grade we were talking about the stuff that was on the show.
The stuff they teach changes every year.
As others have said, reading is probably what I did best in school. Never understood why some people find it so hard to read. Start from an early age.
Then again I've always loved reading. I remember reading the LOTR books when I was 12-13, and albeit I did find it rather boring (more enjoyable once I got older) I got through it.
As a person who's reading age was above the scale since i started school, how does this even happen? Have these people never touched books in their lives, has the only reading they ever done been reading facebook statuses?
