I hope history remembers nothing of this idiotic sensationalist media overblown trial but the fact that its over.
I am disgusted with this thread. To say that no one should be liable for the life of a child minding his own business is pathetic. Especially a child that was without a doubt profiled by an armed man.
We can do all the assuming we want but one ASSUMPTION that wont bring back Trayvon Martin, Vincent Chin, Emmit Till, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo , Undocumented Families, and the countless others unnamed is that if
George Zimmerman stayed in his car like he was trained to do, He would be alive at this very moment.
Your missing the point Facepunch. This isn't about sensationalist smear campaigns this is about people wrongfully dying each day and having their murders walk scott free.
This is about how as a mixed Afro-Hispanic male I was taught by my mother to take my hands out of my pockets when I walked in a store (so they wouldn't think i was stealing), to not mind every store clerk watching me like a hawk, to not go out with anything in my hands to be mistaken for a gun, to not talk back to teachers so they wouldn't have an excuse not to throw me out of the AP class I had a right to be in because of my intelligence.
I have to go through things in my life that others will never have to go through simply because of the color of my skin and my justice system doesn't give one fuck.
Every black person I speak to knows that if the situation was polarized and Zimmerman was a black male, and trayvon was white, Zimmerman would be in prison. “Let me tell you something about privilege; it is so intoxicating that you will fool yourself that you don’t have it.”

Never said he was. White supremacy has its hand in all systems , especially the one that let Zimmerman sleep in his own bed within the same nights he just killed someone. The people in the Sanford community of minority have already made it clear how the police department shows disinterest and prejudice against them but of course you wouldn't know or hear about any of this because everyone is focused on what the sensationalist headlines are trying to do in the first place
DISTRACT YOU .
Everyone's being highly optimistic that this will "blow over". Don't underestimate the majority of the population, most people are 100% pure bred fuckwits. As much as he is innocent, he is a dead man because there are insane people waiting for him.
I really hope the government is assisting him (which I doubt) or some anonymous rich man. Give him some protection for 5 years or so until it calms down a little. The fanatic racists (I'm talking racists other than whites) will never forget though unfortunately.
It's funny how the tables have turned, it's like the lynching parties of the 19th century but now it's an innocent Caucasian/Latino.

So, excuse me for not crying at your story, but I want to ask you this: have you also been taught to attack people and hit their heads against concrete plates? For whatever reason? And if not, do you really have to line up with the guy who did just that, and got killed because of it?
You see, I don't doubt that your life is hard, please, don't think I do. What makes me insensitive prick I am being, is an attempt to justify an obvious crime with "oh be we have a hard life, give us a break!". Don't do that.

Racial profiling is disgusting, but it's not something you can legally try someone for, unless it's a motivation for another crime.
We all know Trayvon's blood is on Zimmerman's hands. He instigated the situation; he profiled Trayvon; his actions led to Trayvon's death. But there's no legal basis in Florida to try him on these grounds. In order to try him for manslaughter in Florida, the prosecution would have to prove that Zimmerman knowingly walked up to Trayvon Martin with the intent of killing him or causing him to die.
It's so true that white privilege is a huge issue in this case. Zimmerman is walking free while people of color who use guns under "Stand Your Ground" are going to jail. But, in Florida, there's no way to try Zimmerman for what he did. There's no law where instigating a situation puts you into jail. And it's unconstitutional to implement a law after the trial in order to retry Zimmerman under those parameters (both due to Double Jeopardy as well as the Little Bill of Rights).
It's just one of the many reasons that makes this case so messy.

Jeez there is so many things wrongs in this post. First of all, there is no evidence supporting the idea that he instigated the situation.
You understanding of manslaughter is totally wrong.
White privilege is not a huge issue in this case, lack of evidence is. Stand Your Ground was not invoked and has no relevance to the case.

If you are following/stalking someone you are creating an uncomfortable environment. If Zimmerman stayed in doors, Trayvon never would have died. Remove the man with the gun from the situation, and no one dies.
My definition of manslaughter:
“A manslaughter verdict would mean jurors rejected Zimmerman’s claim he killed in self defense and ‘intentionally committed an act or acts that caused the death’ of Trayvon [Martin], according to Florida’s definition of the charge.”
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/13/george-zimmerman-trayvon-martin-jury-saturday-deliberations/2514233/
White privilege is a huge issue because there have been multiple cases now where Stand Your Ground is not upheld when black citizens are tried under it. According to PBS (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/criminal-justice/is-there-racial-bias-in-stand-your-ground-laws/ ) -
But how do you measure racial bias? John Roman, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center, recently conducted a study examining racial disparity using FBI data on 43,500 homicides from 2005 to 2009, the most recent years for which data was available. He sifted out only the killings in which there was a single shooter and a single victim, both of whom were strangers to each other — narrowing the pool to about 5,000 homicides.
And Roman looked specifically at “justified” homicides, which as defined by the FBI, are when police determine a private citizen has killed someone who is committing a felony, such as attempted murder, rape or armed robbery.
Roman found that the killings of black people by whites were more likely to be considered justified than the killings of white people by blacks.
Likewise,
— Roman used a technique known as regression analysis, which is a statistical tool to analyze the relationship between different pieces of data.
Using this analysis, Roman found that a greater number of homicides were found justified in Stand Your Ground states in all racial combinations, a result he believes is because those states yielded more killings overall.
[...]
Whites who kill blacks in Stand Your Ground states are far more likely to be found justified in their killings. In non-Stand Your Ground states, whites are 250 percent more likely to be found justified in killing a black person than a white person who kills another white person; in Stand Your Ground states, that number jumps to 354 percent.
The most popular case right now is where an abused woman fired warning shots in response to an abusive husband, and is now facing 20 years.
Are you serious.. you do realize zimmerman was hispanic, right. White privilege?
Hispanic is not a race and racial bias is based much more on skin color than your demographics.
Statistically, the lighter a person is, the more likely they are to receive privilege. This is why many POC actors/musicians/etc during the early 20th century had heavily lighted photographs.
Zimmerman has said himself that his ethnicity has never disrupted his life. Furthermore, he's a white Peruvian.
Are.. you.. serious.
Did you follow the case at all, did you even read how things went down; they didn't mention the "stand your ground" statute at all; he wasn't even being tried under those circumstances. Also Hispanic not a race? Then why does it appear on censuses and other forms? Ignorance is bliss i suppose. Also what does it matter if his ethnicity never disrupted his life, I know plenty of people of all colors who's ethnicity never disrupted their lives.
"Stand your ground" wasn't mentioned but it was heavily part of why he was originally not arrested. The PBS article still proves that, in self-defense cases, whites are more likely to go free than blacks. States with Stand Your Ground - regardless of the law's justification in each individual case - see a gigantic sky rocket where whites are more likely to be justified. It's a jump from 250% to 354%.
According to wikipedia:
Neither "Hispanic" nor "Latino" refers to a race, as a person of Latino or Hispanic ethnicity can be of any race.[9][6] Like non-Latinos, a Latino can be of any single race: White/Caucasian, Black/African American, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander. Again like non-Latinos, some may identify with more than one race, such as Mestizo (a bi-racial person of White/Caucasian and Native American descent), Mulatto (a person of White/Caucasian and Black/African American descent), Zambo (a person of Native American and Black/African American descent) or any other race or combination.
Zimmerman identifies as a caucasian. According to the police report filed after Trayvon's death, he is white. Likewise, "Hispanic or Latino" (remember - Hispanic only refers to Hispania, not all of Latin America) is neither listed as a race nor ethnicity in the cnesus.
If his ethnicity never disrupted his life, he has white privilege due to his light skin complexion.

In this case, the prosecution setup an all-or-nothing position:
http://www.inquisitr.com/847607/george-zimmerman-not-guilty-verdict-florida-manslaughter-laws-explained/
But what does the law say about manslaughter in Florida? The legal definition for manslaughter is “the unjustifiable, inexcusable, and intentional killing of a human being without deliberation, premeditation, and malice.” Some states allow for an “imperfect self-defense,” where someone kills in self defense and overreacted, but in Florida the George Zimmerman jury only had the options of saying George Zimmerman either had a right to act in self-defense or was a murderer.
If the judge had allowed the middle ground option of aggravated assault the George Zimmerman jury could have had more options to fit the details of this case. But if since they apparently leaned toward self defense their only option was to let George Zimmerman go based upon Florida law since the jury is only allowed to consider in turn the charges presented to them as options.
He was originally arrested. He wasn't charged because the prosecutor believed there wasn't enough evidence to prove manslaughter.
I don't understand what you mean about the prosecution
While I'd love to reply to all of you, I simply don't have the time to voice my opinion on an internet forum. Instead I'm taking my voice to the streets to help my community, and better the living conditions of my people. I'm tired of my mom being scared everytime I go out with my friends.
One thing I noticed however is that allot of you are pick and choosing what you want to believe in. For example allot of you choose to believe that Zimmerman was telling the truth about how many times he was hit not bringing into question that 25+ hits to face is enough to do more than just lacerations and a nose fracture. I rest my case in this department but lets just go over things we do know:
Trayvon was getting snacks for his cousin and on his way home
Trayvon was on the phone with his friend minding his own business
Zimmerman sees Trayvon and assumes the worst
Zimmerman approaches Trayvon, Fight occurs
Trayvon is dead
Now to say that Zimmerman couldn't have done anything differently and that fact the has said he wouldn't is appalling and a disgrace. I'm not screaming 2nd Degree Murder, nor Manslaughter-but responsibility. A responsibility that no one wants to own.
To end my comment in a thread that manifested out of bad context , I'd like to do the same by saying this:
A system cannot fail those it was never built to protect. We must remember that God is the ultimate judge in this thing called life. This justice system is man made, and please believe that no man will get away with murder of an innocent child under God's eyes. Continue praying for Trayvon's family and for the soul of a man who will receive judgment greater than a verdict could ever bestow.
God bless you all and I pray none of your familiar members are ever killed immorally or when they didn't have the right to be.
White privilege.... you do realize that's just as racist as black privilege, or asian privilege.

Wow, I didn't realize that there was an institutional bias against white people in America!
Because, you know, racism is an institutional and internalized systematic discrimination against a group of people based on the complexion of their skin. NOT prejudice. A person of color can be prejudiced against a white. He/she can't be racist, because there is no system setup which persecutes whites.

Regardless, Stand Your Ground still plays a huge role within the issue - even if it was disregarded within the court room. Statistics done by the FBI prove that states with Stand Your Ground laws are more likely to let white citizens walk away from charges on self-defense claims.
Self-defense, as a concept, is racially charged according to those statistics. Whites are more likely to walk free if they claim self-defense; people of color are not.
[editline]15th July 2013[/editline]
He wasn't initially arrested because there was plenty of evidence to show it was self defence, he was only arrested after a huge outcry after the media played martin to be a sweet innocent teen, and zimmerman a nazi racist. The media played a massive role in this case, and how it happened. For proof, just look at how poor the prosecution was, there was so little evidence that they resorted to huge straw men and blatent lies.
That still doesn't refute the statistics that show whites who claim self-defense are much more likely to walk away than blacks.

You are being very rude.
Just because there isn't a system that persecutes whites, doesn't mean it's still okay to be prejudiced and racist against them. that's only fueling the fire
I don't think prejudice is right at all.
But denying the existence of privilege and writing off the concept of white privilege as "reverse racism" is ludicrous. If someone can't handle the concept of white privilege, then they have no place discussing the sociological impact of the Zimmerman trial.

What sociological impact? That whites can get away more than blacks can? Because Zimmerman is only half white, and his skin tone is hispanic. I also disagree with the concept of white privilege.

wow. (warning, slight gore)
(User was banned for this post ("Trolling / distasteful" - MaxOfS2D))
Accepting white privilege in a sociological discussion is like accepting the existence of Newton's Laws in a discussion on physics. It's such a core and basic tenant within the field with very little legitimate proof against it.
Research on self-defense flat-out proves this. And Zimmerman's skin tone is NOT hispanic; "hispanic" is not a skin tone. The US Census even acknowledges this. A Hispanic/Latino person, within the US Census, identifies their race separately from whether they are a hispanic/latino. Zimmerman is a self-confessed white Peruvian. Even the police report says so.
Not to mention, Zimmerman can positivelyanswer many of this site's questions regarding privileges (http://ted.coe.wayne.edu/ele3600/mcintosh.html ):
1. I can, if I wish, arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.
2. If I should need to move, I can be pretty sure of renting or purchasing housing in an area that I can afford and in which I would want to live.
3. I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me.
4. I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed.
8. If I want to, I can be pretty sure of finding a publisher [for his book]
12. I can swear, or dress in second-hand clothes or not answer letters without having people attribute these choices to the bad morals, the poverty, or the illiteracy of my race.
13. I can speak in public to a powerful male group without putting my race on trial.
14. I can do well in a challenging situation without being called a credit to my race.
15. I am never asked to speak for all the people of my racial group.
16. I can remain oblivious of the language and customs of persons of color, who constitute the worlds' majority, without feeling in my culture any penalty for such oblivion.
17. I can criticize our government and talk about how much I fear its policies and behavior without being seen as a cultural outsider.
19. If a traffic cop pulls me over, or if the IRS audits my tax return, I can be sure I haven't been singled out because of my race.
24. I can be sure that if I need legal or medical help my race will not work against me.
26. I can chose blemish cover or bandages in flesh color that more or less matches my skin.
He's said himself he does not feel disadvantaged based on being a Peruvian, and his police report identifies him as white. He knows best what his own experience with prejudice is.

These are stupid and pointless. Even if you feel like the case was overwhelming in one person's favor, images like this represent how disconnected many Internet users are from the actual problem at hand.
Trayvon was killed and Zimmerman's life is ruined. I don't think you would like these photos if you were either of those men.

I said earlier that I was watching /pol/ for the stuff they were going to produce.
I didn't indicate any approval of the picture.
Usually someone is telling the truth if they've been questioned so many times and it's the same. Also, are you saying that Zimmerman knew exactly the number of times he got hit? How many people can actually count the number of times they get hit in the heat of the moment?
Trayvon was getting snacks for his cousin and on his way home
Irrelevant and wrong. He was getting food for his younger brother. Facts>Emotions
Trayvon was on the phone with his friend minding his own business
Yeah, except there's the part where he breaks Zimmerman's nose and slams his head on the sidewalk.
Zimmerman sees Trayvon and assumes the worst
If he assumed the worst he wouldn't have called a non-emergency dispatcher.
Zimmerman approaches Trayvon, Fight occurs
There is no evidence that implies this. No injuries on Trayvon other that gunshot and his knuckles. If Zimmerman approached Trayvon, he would've gotten the upper hand which his injuries imply the exact opposite. If you're gonna say he approached with his gun there would be no fight, just BAM and dead.
Trayvon is dead
Truly groundbreaking evidence
Now to say that Zimmerman couldn't have done anything differently and that fact the has said he wouldn't is appalling and a disgrace.
Yeah, he should've done a public announcement in front of potentially thousands of people who probably want to kill him. Sometimes it's better to be silent because no matter what he says it will not please everyone.
Get the facts and listen to the case, or else don't post in these threads at all.
Zimmerman was told to stop, instead he drew his gun and went after Martin. That's pretty concrete in and of itself that Zimmerman had bad intentions. It's quite obvious he wanted to put himself in a situation where he could kill someone and get away with it rather than actually keep his home and neighborhood secured like he claims.
