why would puerto rico do that they don't have to pay multiple taxes because they're not states afaik
their governor is pro-statehood, he was the one who called for the vote and probably campaigned for it. Over the past votes the island has been slowly swinging toward statehood, it was only a matter of time.
The United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. Let's make it happen, Cap'n.
lets leave out mexico k?
I don't like 51, it's an odd number. Can we get 52? Loan us something Canada.
Get Guam on the horn.
I always forget we have other territories. They don't seem like they have large enough populations to become states, anyway.
Puerto Rico has a bigger population than like 30 other states. The other territories combined have a little more than half the population of Wyoming, the least populated state.
Puerto Rico being the largest of them and even then the other 4 are barely populated compared to the other states. [editline]6th November 2012[/editline] If only there was some better way to say that, like the United States of North America.
We should definitely still grab one of them as a state just to make it an even 52. Guam definitely has the coolest name of all of them so that's the best contender. Each state could have a State Playing Card wouldn't that be so cool?

Instead of having 51 states can't we just merge North and South Dakota and then havie Puerto Rico as our 50th state? Or ionno maybe West and East Dakota.
We'd need new collector's quarters.
I'm alright with this. I always enjoyed collecting them as a child.
If only there was some better way to say that, like the United States of North America.
Couldn't we just keep it "United States of America"?
this doesn't mean for sure that Puerto Rico will become a state though does it? hasn't it gotten close before only to not pass?
Couldn't we just say "America"?
Well no, because that would be the same name we already have, and there's still that whole 'South America' thing. [editline]6th November 2012[/editline]
this doesn't mean for sure that Puerto Rico will become a state though does it? hasn't it gotten close before only to not pass?
60% with a majority of districts reporting should essentially seal it, though. Additionally, the Democrats and Republicans have said they will honour whatever choice the Puerto Ricans make here.
Better yet let's surprise some country and make them number 52! Cambodia's birthday is coming up what a great present that would be!
Better yet let's surprise some country and make them number 52! Cambodia's birthday is coming up what a great present that would be!
Or we can put foothold in Europe with Albania!
Or we can put foothold in Europe with Albania!
Let's just take Georgia, that way there's no more confusion about which Georgia people are talking about.
or we could make the USS Guam a state rather than a glorified Aircraft Carrier.
We should send an invite to the Philippines if they want to be under our glorious eagle once again.
Just under 73% of stations reported, 62% in favor, I'd say it's just about a done deal.
Let's just take Georgia, that way there's no more confusion about which Georgia people are talking about.
Yeah we could have Georgia and East Georgia the confusion would be eradicated forever.
Yeah we could have Georgia and East Georgia the confusion would be eradicated forever.
Or we change the name of the East Georgia to "The other Georgia"
Anyone know how they'd vote and what kind of senators/congressmen they'd elect?
this doesn't mean for sure that Puerto Rico will become a state though does it? hasn't it gotten close before only to not pass?
Nope. Past referendum have been overwhelmingly for the status quo.
Nope. Past referendum have been overwhelmingly for the status quo.
I wouldn't call it overwhelming, I thought the last time they voted it was extremely close between statehood and "none of the above"
Anyone know how they'd vote and what kind of senators/congressmen they'd elect?
Puerto Ricans are mostly democratic, especially those who live in the states.
I wouldn't call it overwhelming, I thought the last time they voted it was extremely close between statehood and "none of the above"
Yeah I was exaggerating (at least for the 1993 referendum which lost by two percent) Either way I voted for statehood so I am pretty happy with this.
Yeah I was exaggerating (at least for the 1993 referendum which lost by two percent) Either way I voted for statehood so I am pretty happy with this.
All though you're still an American citizen regardless, welcome to the family comrade!
This seems fucking huge... it is right?
Anyone know how they'd vote and what kind of senators/congressmen they'd elect?
Same way they handled the introduction of Hawaii and Alaska, since those became decades after the passing of Public Law 62-5. Aka, allocate Representatives accordingly to match population... Which is a fuckhuge deal since Puerto Rico would become the 29th most populous state in the Union.
This seems fucking huge... it is right?
I like to think it is, I never really imagined I'd see a new state admitted to the union, so it came as a surprise to me. I was three during the last vote on statehood.
This seems fucking huge... it is right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Puerto_Rico GDP US$98.76 billions (FY 2011) That's ours now. If they go state, of course.
