facepunch is significantly less homo/trans/non-binary/black/asian/jewish/everythingphobic than /pol/
that's not saying much but still
Facepunch is less homophobic/racist than /pol/, I'll give you that.
In every other department, the more vocal parts are pretty equal for the most part.
When I go to it I don't get a list I just get the blank box custom option
Wonder how this will affect those targeted ads on the right
one time my friend changed my "interested in" to men and till this day sometimes I get "meet up with super hot gay men in your area!"
ugh
Maybe he tried to send you a message this way.
tbh, the system they are showing here will do the job just fine for now. the identities mentioned in the article are reasonable while most of the ones that aren't are either really obscure, nonexistent or only used by special snowflakes
Blank box is easy to implement, would please everyone who wanted to change it, and not harm anyone.
It'd also mean they wouldn't need to change it again.
People say this a lot but that's not the definition of gender, gender can refer to both mental gender AND physical sex. They are synonyms.
it depends on the context
that's not what a synonym is
Gender is the range of physical, biological, mental and behavioral characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity. Depending on the context, the term may refer to biological sex (i.e. the state of being male, female or intersex), sex-based social structures (including gender roles and other social roles), or gender identity

how is it funny
By not getting upset by everything
it's sex that's black and white, not gender
sex =/= gender
Even sex isn't black and white because of stuff like androgen insensitivity syndrome, intersex people, the various chromosomal disorders, etc.
Blank box is easy to implement, would please everyone who wanted to change it, and not harm anyone.
It'd also mean they wouldn't need to change it again.
the part about them not needing to change it ever again is true, but i can't imagine anyone actually getting harmed or bothered by the fact that they can't put down something like "girlfag", "genderfuck" or "trigender" as their gender
you'd get one or two angry tumblr posts, but that's really about it
But still, what would be so bad if they did take the gender option away entirely?
They'd lose a massive amount of data.
Blank box is easy to implement, would please everyone who wanted to change it, and not harm anyone.
Easy for displaying on profiles, really bad for collecting information if theoretically every user can put a unique thing in there
Pretty awesome they did this, zero negatives, only positives.
I feel bad for people in a 'weird' gender situation who feel pressured to label themselves. LGBT groups do not represent all gay people etc, I know gay people who really hate LGBT groups because all they want is acceptance as a person not a sub-set of labels.

the problem there is with other people looking down on those who do identify by those 'labels', not the labels themselves
why should you have to identify your gender in social situations (also who does?). If genders free form now be w/e and we'll talk about something else. Should be opposed to labeling people
There's always been male/female/other choice that defines he/she/they identifiers in notifications related to a person on facebook, was it an issue before? What right do you have to complain about giving some people the option to more accurately express who they feel they are (even if a lot of choices are really niche or some people are obnoxious about them)?
gender is all about who you are in a social situation, not what you are by technical definitions behind the scenes.
People say this a lot but that's not the definition of gender, gender can refer to both mental gender AND physical sex. They are synonyms.
they're often treated synonymously but as far as identity identifiers it's gender for mental and sex for physical.
gender is all about who you are in a social situation, not what you are by technical definitions behind the scenes.
They added a long list of technical definitions. If it's all about who you are, leave specifics off your facebook and let the rest of the stuff you put on there define you, or if for some reason you feel you have to go into specifics on your gender because you're part of a sub-set of people who feel it's meaning has gone in a certain direction sure, use the about me or w/e else Facebook has.
Options should be 'Male' 'Female' 'Other (or specify)' 'Prefer not to say'.
I want to identify as a Khajiit.
0/10 Facebook
I want to identify as a Khajiit.
0/10 Facebook
no one actually says this seriously, in the sense that they want to be a lyncanthrope or something

Why is this image so funny to me? :v:
Trans Man sounds like a superhero
why should you have to identify your gender in social situations (also who does?). If genders free form now be w/e and we'll talk about something else. Should be opposed to labeling people
you have to identify your gender in social situations because society is structured on a gender binary system.
It's like you literally have never been out of your room and talked to someone.
I genuinely just put the thought out there to see what peoples opinions on that would be if it were to happen; I agree with your stance
But still, what would be so bad if they did take the gender option away entirely? People wouldn't even have to think about that aspect of the site and focus on what the "social network" is generally used for.
How you identify your gender almost completely models how you interact in a social environment so I don't see any reason to remove it; if anything the new options help people be more open about themselves.
Using "they" as a pronoun to refer to an individual is grammatically incorrect, I'm suing Facebook for mental anguish.
Facebook finally recognizes the pomegranate in me.
Using "they" as a pronoun to refer to an individual is grammatically incorrect, I'm suing Facebook for mental anguish.
incorrect

"When I tell someone a joke they laugh"
2 options are enough tbh
Yes, I agree. We should really just have
Male
Not male
=ninja=
it depends on the context
that's not what a synonym is
They are partly synonymous since they can mean the same thing, my point is that people keep saying that gender ONLY means gender identity which is incorrect, since it CAN mean sex.
Using "they" as a pronoun to refer to an individual is grammatically incorrect, I'm suing Facebook for mental anguish.
It sounds stupid and unnatural in many situations, but it is correct.
Well at least they're not adding "xe" bullshit.
The hell is "xe"?
incorrect

"When I tell someone a joke they laugh"
As far as people are concerned "they" is correct now, but grammar textbooks will still teach that it's unfavorable to "When I tell someone a joke 'he or she' laughs" or "When I tell someone a joke 'it' laughs."
As far as people are concerned "they" is correct now, but grammar textbooks will still teach that it's unfavorable to "When I tell someone a joke 'he or she' laughs" or "When I tell someone a joke 'it' laughs."
"When I tell someone a joke they laugh"
I don't get what's so wrong about it.
Literally hurts no one and helps minorities. I'd like to hear an argument against this that isn't based off an arbitrary standard of what a valid gender identity is.
Yeah just imagine being someone who gets upset over this kind of thing
It's like the people who get upset over gay marriage, afraid that it hurts other marriages
The hell is "xe"?
A term that people invented to promote gender neutrality in the same vein as something like "hir."
Basically meaningless but for some reason using "she" or "he" is evil to some people now.
As far as people are concerned "they" is correct now, but grammar textbooks will still teach that it's unfavorable to "When I tell someone a joke 'he or she' laughs" or "When I tell someone a joke 'it' laughs."
Can you define yourself as 'it' on Facebook now?
EDIT: Say for instance that I'm not a man or a woman but I'm an inter-dimensional predatory creature that can transform myself into a clown. Can I be 'it' then?
