But then people would just use it for silly jokes.
People also enter in "ninja mcburgersteinfucksyourmomlol420" as their names, but I don't see Facebook changing that anytime soon. [editline]14th February 2014[/editline]
It's probably because there's an extremely blurry line between having a nonbinary gender and wanting to be a special snowflake If you think you're a man instead of a woman or vice versa then fair enough, but the thing that gets me about nonbinary genders is how oddly specific they are. what makes people prefer "Xhe" over "Zhe"? what the hell is the difference aside from spelling? etc.
It should not matter and it does not matter, because people can identify any way they want. Why? Because the pronoun used to refer to you doesn't affect anything at all. Will I somehow die if I identify as a male but am REALLY a female? No. Will society collapse if people want to be referred to as "them" or "they?" No. Like, what are you achieving by bitching about non-binary genders? Why is "xhe" and "zhe" not acceptable, like, I'd like to hear a valid argument besides "it sounds weird." [editline]14th February 2014[/editline] Seriously guys, I see a lot of you posting "What if people use it to fuck around?" as a legitimate reason as to why sites shouldn't have a blank bar to enter how you identify. How the hell is that in any way justifiable? I mean, as I said higher up in my post, people already fuck around with the currently established system, so a new gender identity system won't suddenly spawn a tsunami of new jokers.

By the rules of the English language those two words would be indistinguishable in speech but they're spelled differently so it just makes everyone else's life more complicated if one isn't decided on. Of course you could argue that things like 'read' and 'red' sound identical but are spelled differently, but the difference there is that people aren't going to get very loudly and obnoxiously offended if you accidentally use the wrong one in text - they'll probably just point out that you used the wrong one, and at worst call you a retard for it.

Like, I chatted with several dudes I've met at a convention and a lot of them were non-binary. When I talked to one of them, they went "oh, it's zhe/zheir/zhim." and I went "Oh, oops." There. I misgendered them, they corrected me, it didn't happen again. Having to get used to saying something besides "him/his/he" is not enough of an inconvenience in my life for me to justify dismissing "weird" non-binary pronouns.
Once you actually leave Tumblr and start talking to sane people, it's primarily used to refer to "not trans" (because "not trans" is a little bit of a mouthful). I'm close friends with one or two people who actually say things like "cishet" as part of their standard lexicon, and since they're part of the general functioning public it's not meant to be, or perceived as, a slur.
cis and trans are just latin terms anyway. i knew and used them before even realizing i was trans :v:
It's probably because there's an extremely blurry line between having a nonbinary gender and wanting to be a special snowflake If you think you're a man instead of a woman or vice versa then fair enough, but the thing that gets me about nonbinary genders is how oddly specific they are. what makes people prefer "Xhe" over "Zhe"? what the hell is the difference aside from spelling? etc.
"help the only thing i know about nonbinary people is from those mean weirdos on tumblr so every nonbinary person must hate it when the x or z is wrong!! :(((" stop. nobody is a "special snowflake" for identifying in a non binary way.
awareness is a good thing. no one should be kept in the dark. being ignorant about an issue like transphobia only makes it worse.
I think a lot of people - too many perhaps - have the selfish worldview that if something doesn't affect them personally then fuck it. Advocacy and awareness go a long way and it's time those people recognised this.
How the fuck can facebook add this but still not add a dislike button?
Kids bullying each other on social media is fucked up as it is, pointless stuff like that wouldn't help.
I don't see the problem with this People already set their place of work at hogwarts and say they major in swag. [editline]13th February 2014[/editline] Fuck the phrase cis. Seriously. Like I should be ashamed of my gender.
cis isn't an insult???
Can someone explain the reason that gender became some sort of abstract representation of identity/personality/lifestyle instead of being the same as sex? And does gender identity go against gender equality? I don't understand how trying to partition humanity in an abstract sense is supposed to promote recognizing everyone as people.

I don't understand how trying to partition humanity in an abstract sense is supposed to promote recognizing everyone as people.
Gender never became it, it always was. Sex and gender were never synonyms. Sex is based on your biological state, mainly Male or Female (with a few rare others.) Gender is more towards the social side of who you are, mostly geared towards masculine and feminine, but some see themselves as neither or both, or just don't identify with their sex. Gender is basically just a social construct, while sex is a biological one. Also it in no way go against equality. They aren't trying to separate themselves from their sex, they just don't identify as it. Not because there is a want to identify as something else, but because that's just how they feel. And it promotes recognizing people because we should realize that we all aren't the same, and that we all have differences, and not ignore them just to have everyone be equal. Basically equality isn't supposed to be everyone is the same, it's supposed to be everyone is different, but nobody is better than the other.
Since when is transgender a gender within itself?
cis isn't an insult???
It is when you're Katbug, the constantly oppressed white male! But seriously Katbug, get educated on these topics because holy shit you post nothing but shit in these threads.

Gender now has another definition referring to identity. What I don't get about gender-identity is the assertion of its existence from birth. If it's a social construct, let it be a social construct. Like, why relate it to sex at all? Why not just dump gender roles and just have varying personality? If humans were asexual, would gender identity be a thing? What would it be called? Are we not just trying to create an abstract labeling system for varying personalities based on their deviation from behaviors associated with their sex?
Have they removed it? I cant find the option.
I said it was a good thing that facebook did this in class today and someone said that I was "surprisingly insightful for being cis"
That doesn't really sound like an insult - more that they were surprised that someone who wasn't trans* was reasonably knowledgeable and supportive of it, probably because they had bad experience with cis people being ignorant and belligerent about that sort of thing in the past (because obviously someone without personal experience of the issue is more likely to not understand and/or be hostile towards it). [editline]14th February 2014[/editline]
I mean, Gender always had a definition that was synonymous with that of sex in the same way that sex has a definition that is synonymous with gender.
Have they removed it? I cant find the option.
it's US only right now, I think
They were never completely synonymous - before people developed the concept of gender identity, gender was used in linguistics (e.g. masculine and feminine words in French)
I was referring to the fact that there is more than one definition and the main one, at least in English for my lifetime, was the one referring to the sex.
I want to be a carrot for the s&g's, why have a "custom" box if it can't be "custom", ridiculous.
Would most trans people even use trans? I know I'm just going to stick to "Female".
I'm using Transwoman on FB for convince and I'm very open about my being Trans in general.

I'm trying to change my gender to "hold on, let me check..." but I keep getting "You must select one or more custom genders in order to save." What am I doing wrong?
Joking around about something doesn't mean you don't support it..
that joke is so stale and unfunny that the only reason you'd use it anymore is if you legitimately believe it actually brings a valid point
fuck me for trying to have fun right
It wasn't funny the first million times it was said, it won't be funny the next million times it will be said.
I don't like using "them" for a single person because it's plural and it sounds terrible when used as singular. So my solution is just not to talk to or about those people ever
