people complained about changes like these because they don't get how silly these look in real life, like how so many of the same nerds don't get that wearing a fedora in real life does not look good
in other words get some taste, other companies are doing it too
Sorry, didn't realize that style had an objective scale of bad to good.
I think it's nice, especially how it goes with the office logo.
Much better than the original two-tone Metrosoft logo that they were rocking earlier this year. I don't think they can ditch the iconic colours.

They didn't even remove the old logo from that little popup. It looks so out of place.
The new logo is nice tho I like Metro.
Well they have to redesign the box first, it looks like it should be in XP.

What does an old, late 70's NBC logo have to do with this?
That os, so edgy.
Also anyone else reminded of a certain other logo..

I think this one is better.
it's ugly
Whats bad is they probably spent hundreds of thousans if not millions on that logo....
the logo looks great on sites that stream in something (like social networks)

what was the two-tone MS logo like?

The logo looks great on FB:

I still think they should go with my idea for windows 8

Minimalism is the latest design trend, and IMO its a really fucking stupid/ugly trend for 80% of companies/subjects, that ends up making most things look terribly generic and devoid of personality
However, I think it works quite well for this. Its a trend that works better for multinational tech corporations, than something like... DC comics.
And this new logo, completely owns their Windows 8 logo.

Look at dat bullshit
I think it looks great.
I like the new Microsoft logo but I dislike the new Windows logo.
I redesigned it for fun.

So, what does the orange represent? Blue is Windows, Red is Office, and Green is xBox, but orange is just sort of there.
But, I don't see what's so bad about the logo, it's nice and simple (and iconic as it looks like the start button icon).

Seems like they are trying to go back to their roots, eh?

I'm not sure which is worse, this or the new one. The new one looks terrible, and could be done in under a minute by anyone who knows how to use a square tool and MS paint.

SHIT holy fuck that's huge
my favorite microsoft logo is still the one from their apparent thrash metal phase

I like flat clean logos, they look more modern and have a certain appeal to them

that favicon, much much better
That is... effortless.
I mean, it doesn't look bad, but come on, you could have thought of something more elaborate, more iconic. The best logo of this new metro-era is the office logo. the rest blow.
Somehow, I think this will only deepen the confusion some people (read, old people) have between what's Microsoft and what's Windows. (because of you know, the little coloured squares)
What is with the new fascination with sharp edged squares.
Its like they're afraid of getting sued for beveled edges.
It looks really generic but seeing how it reflects their latest OS I guess its okay.
Would you prefer a 3D logo full of gloss that looks busy as fuck or a simple, clean, 2D logo that gets it point across. The four iconic colours is enough for someone to pick out that it's windows and windows is Microsoft.

I don't think minimalism itself is a problem, but rather its execution. For example look at Google's UI across their services. Minimalistic, though pleasing.
Yeah let's take a look at google

Tell me what looks more modern and better.
the one that doesn't have that awful shadow effect from Office
Hey, it's easier to draw...
