EA: Steam vs Origin not a “proper battle,” there’s space for both

Why did I imagine a wild western shootout when I read the title?
I don't want 2 things that preform the same job. I'll stick with Steam

happened to me earlier this year. Pissed me off to no end. I tested out Origin's offline mode and you didn't have to jump through any hoops to actually use it so in that point I like Origin better.
The difference between Steam and Origin for me is that I have to use Origin. I want to use Steam, and I do so for the majority of my non-steam and steam-based games.
You have to use Steam for a lot of games to? I don't get your point it makes no sense. You don't want to use Origin because you HAVE to use it but you WANT to use Steam even though for certain games like Origin you HAVE to use Steam. It just makes it more convenient to use other non-steam games.
If that's a bit confusing I'll reword it cause I think I may of confused myself a bit :p

You have to use Origin to play a couple anticipated titles that require Origin. You have to use Steam to play a couple anticipated titles that require Steam.
Point being, Steam has already gained the lead with third-party support, but EA's Origin is lacking behind.
the only reason most people hate Origin is because of the Battlefield 3 exclusivity.

nevermind he pretty much said what I was saying
RAGE! SOMEBODY ELSE IS MAKING SOMETHING SIMILAR TO STEAM, *Fanboy gets mad*
I've never experienced anything bad with origins.
Wow the company that makes the product competing with the service that is completely dominating the market claims that there is room for theirs in the market as well.
Shocker.
There's space for both as long as neither has exclusives.
Origin is shit from any point of view. They charge fees for pre-ordering, its not really user friendly and there are other several things that are way too annoying for the customer.
Valve makes money while making the customer happy, surely they are not perfect but they are still way better than EA.

In a way yes, but the way VALVe and Apple operate are completely different.
VALVe - Very kind, passionate about the community, does not abuse its hold on the market, is a monopoly because noone can make anything near as good as Steam.
Apple - Puts out ridiculously overpriced products, would abuse its monopoly if it had it anymore.
Origin is inferior to Steam and the only reason anyone ever clicked on the download button was to play Battlefield 3. Face it, EA, you can't compete with Steam.
There's space for both as long as fucking EA isn't filling origin with spywares and shit like that

Oh wait they already do
Which would you choose as a new e-consumer for games?
Steam, the service thats been around for almost 10 years, has 35 million users and over 1,300 games to choose from.
Origin; Buggy piece of shit with mediocre games and is trying to get people to join by releasing an even worse beta and threatening to ban people just for joining specific servers, still has alot of problems and makes you want to re-read those 4 terms of service pages you had to accept before installing the game/registering.
i hate programs like Steam and Origin. I don't like not "truly" owning my games. Being forced to use programs. I like the Steam community and friends thing, though.
Origin, and probably other digital distribution services that try to compete with Steam, will probably fail due to Steam having such a large following and already being set up with many services and features for the consumer and the publisher.
The only way another digital distribution service could win is to be set up on launch or else for Steam to fail.
Fuck Origin.
I tried to download BF3 Beta to check it out many times but get the error 'you do not meet requirements' then I find out that you have be 18 or older on your account. Any way to change that?
I can't even preorder though I wasn't planning to.. hopefully EA stops being a huge douche and just puts BF3 and ME3 on Steam where it belongs.
EA will most likely use origin to promote their games, while valve has loads more of games to choose from.
And face it, people just get origin to play BF3.
Origin will have a chance when they got sales like steam with freaking -90%
and all the other stuff they need to fix, but lets not think about that xD

Well you don't technically own any game you purchase, you're only purchasing a license to play that game.
Steam will crush Origin, the only reason they're in 'Late stage talks' is because of the mass pre-order cancellations caused by the beta, they're hoping that Steam will boost their sales and are willing to 'compromise' to maximize profits.

Give them time. Origins would become as powerful as STEAM. Remember when Steam first came out and it was all buggy and laggy as hell. There were no 3rd party games on sale yet?

And I thought that Twitter update was a Hoax?
I don't trust Origin nearly as far as I can throw it. Which isn't very far because it isn't a tangible thing but the point still stands.
Competing with each other means with the same means, no exclusivity.
Silly EA.
It's an interesting debate, really.
On the one hand, we all know that a healthy competition forces both sides to keep working on their features to keep impressing customers, which means the consumer wins in the end.
In theory.
On the other hand, Origin does a bad job at copying Steam's infrastructure as a basis to be a solid product, then add original features that make it a "threat" that cause Steam to advance further. Their only threat is/was to make BF3 as an exclusive title, and if we've learned anything from console wars it's that exclusive titles are a shitty idea.
You may not be forced to buy a whole console in this case, but more applications (from a customer perspective, for no good reason seeing how Steam can do what Origin can, and better), which makes the customers angry and angry at EA alone because they're the ones enforcing Origin.
On the other other hand, what we're all fearing is a monopoly that makes it impossible for someone new to enter the market, has absolute dominance and doesn't even advance because it doesn't have to advance because people have nowhere else to go.
At the moment, Steam is none of that. Publishers can always pull an Origin if they're really unsatisfied with Steam, and it will also work if their product is superior to Steam's services. Right now, most Steam users are happy users and Steam keeps developing (like the recent trading feature) and pushing out wallet-raping sales that keeps the customers at bay.
As long as A) the giant is moving, B) people willingly follow it and C) there is no superior alternative around, Steam has earned its place where it is. They should try again with Origin once they can deliver a couple of convincing reasons why it's better than steam and worth the effort. Exclusive titles, like I said, are counter-productive in that cause.
My friend got stuck with his ASSFUCKKK -account he used after Origin insta-deleted all his previous accounts he created. He tried to make a new one after the ASSFUCKKK worked but failed.
So, if you see ASSFUCKKK in your beta-sessions, remember to feel sorry for him. :v:

From reading the article, even just the title of the OP it will tell you that EA doesn't want to compete with Steam. What part of "I would say that we’re introducing Origin as our consumer relationship platform. We want to build a platform that allows consumers to have the best experience you could ever had with EA games" do you not get? Holy fuck.
You're supporting your argument for EA with things that people from EA have said.
There's no doubt they want to compete with Steam, why else would they have taken their games off Steam and made BF3 Origin-exclusive otherwise?
I'd love cross compatibility.
Like, the ability to talk to friends across services and transfer personal info between one and another, like profile descriptions and achievements perhaps.
Most Internet browsers do stuff like this, even if they are competitors. Why shouldn't Steam and Origin?
