As I understand it at least, it has to be mentioned in the new continuity to be considered canon. But none of these characters would be who they are without the old canon, either, so it can be assumed that generally, things like RC's backstory and what not are still valid for the most part. There is no reason to think KotOR and related media don't exist anymore simply because Ezra Bridger didn't look at the camera and give a longwinded recap of everything some ancient Sith lords did.

It works well as a standalone miniseries.
