I still love the comparison of humans to cancer. We were part of an ecosystem that kept the world stable and alive, then we decide to go "fuck it" and spread like wildfire, which may kill the world in the process.
It's not a perfect analogy by far, but a fun one to think about.
We couldn't "kill the world" even if we tried to. Even a nuclear holocaust wouldn't eradicate the most resistant forms of life. At worst, we would cause a mass extinction which would lead to a new biologic period after a few million years.
I think the main goal here is to prevent our species from going extinct, whether by attempting to stop ecologic changes which could put our survival in jeopardy or by adapting to those changes. Being compassionate towards entire species is meaningless, countless species have disappeared since life first started, and others have taken their place since. It's how evolution works.
We should prevent mass extinction of species not because we feel sorry for them, but because such extinctions could lead to changes we might not be able to adapt to.
