So I can't say I don't like a MLP movie if I'm a.) not a brony and b.) haven't seen it?
I question that logic.
If you don't like dota or aren't interested in the dota or esports community then no this movie is not for you. But when you go around saying that you wouldn't watch it because of something one person said when they aren't even a big part of the movie is dumb.
It's hilarious watching people's reactions to a movie they haven't watched
Especially since I already watched it and the trailer is nothing like what the actual movie is
this is a movie about the lives of competitive gamers, but you guys are raging because it doesn't feature the games you want. pretty standard facepunch.

no its just people getting offended over one non-important soundbite
seriously guys he wasn't dissing your favourite competitive game
Will I have to pay, for bonus footage?
there isn't one and thats whats bad. I think it's just as ludicrous to pay a football player millions of dollars to work for no more than 8 seconds at a time for only a few days out of the week.
I don't think some basement dweller should get paid to do something that the majority of the planet does for leisure, thats even worse than getting paid to play an actual sport.
If it was that simple, everyone could do that and there wouldn't be much of a competition at all going on.
People watch high level sports because it's skill, strategies and spirit from the best of the best on display, not just because some dude is playing a game they like. The people that follow this scene love getting surprised by twists and tricks, they love seeing how captains react to each others' strategies mid-game, they love to join in with the tension and excitement of players that have spent weeks or months training and have now arrived at the moment of truth, they love cheering united as a crowd for team mates congratulating each other after a victory and losers being extended gestures of sportsmanship as tough opponents.
The spirit of sportsmanship alone inspires and invigorates people when they see how much effort and passion players put into their work and how two teams can fiercely fight each other, but still have a tremendous amount of rivalry respect after the game.
It doesn't make crops grow faster and it doesn't cure aids, but the entertainment industry in general is so big because it can make people feel all those emotions, enrich them psychologically. If you get your brain excited in other ways, sincerely great for you. But don't piss on people's parades just because people pay money for a great show or there's a great demand for seeing certain shows performed by certain people.
I don't care much for sports myself, but that's no reason to be so incredibly hateful and ignorant about something you probably don't even give enough shits about to try to understand.

If it's about competitive gaming as a whole, only covering Dota 2 as it seems to be doing seems rather stupid, especially when it completely ignores everything before it.
I don't even care for say, fighting games like Street Fighter, or RTSs like Starcraft, but I find it incredibly stupid to imagine talking about esports overall without at least covering their massive influence. (Along with games I do like, such as Quake and CS)
I spy some cinematic versions of gameplay moments

it's not about competitive gaming in general, it follows 3 players and the first international you dunce.
Clearly this is about Dota, The International, and the players that participated in that and how it affects their lives. I don't care what some editor did to make it seem like something else or biggery. It looks interesting and anyone who really believes this covers esports as a whole is silly. Even those that decided what kind of message this documentary was trying to deliver.

To be fair, opening up with "Ten years ago competitive gaming wasn't even a thing" is really stupid, but seriously don't let that ruin it for you haha. From the sound of it it was one player's opinion.
You know what they should have done? They should have hired me to make this movie! I know way more about videogames and my opinions are way better.
Way to appeal to those casuals yet again, Valve!

also you gotta be looking for reasons to get mad if you think this is about competitive gaming as a whole
FREE TO PLAY is a feature-length documentary that follows three professional gamers from around the world as they compete for a million dollar prize in the first Dota 2 International Tournament. In recent years, E Sports has surged in popularity to become one of the most widely-practiced forms of competitive sport today. A million dollar tournament changed the landscape of the gaming world and for those elite players at the top of their craft, nothing would ever be the same again. Produced by Valve, the film documents the challenges and sacrifices required of players to compete at the highest level.
Well this thread is a shit storm. Thanks all for being extremely critical of movie you haven't even watched yet. I love that somehow a lot of you think that the movie loses all its credibility because it's made by Valve.

... the game itself doesn't matter, it's the community and lifestyle of competitive gaming
competitive gaming wasn't a thing 10 years ago
just like its not a thing now
What's the difference between traditional sports and esports
Football is equally pointless and those guys make even more money
people who make this comparison sound like they've never engaged in physical activity in their lives

great ad-hominem... why not actually make a point while you're at it?

Then explain events where people play video games, competing against each other, for a prize/honor. What's that?
And they are both damn similar. They're both hobbies/pastimes made into competitive events. Please explain your issue.
Yeah but there weren't million $ prize pools or international tournaments for them. They weren't televised or live streamed or anything close to what these new esport tournies are doing now.
I watched competitive esports on TV 10 years ago.
Every movie about 'pro' gaming sucks. Non-interesting shit nobody cares about.
did anyone at all expect this to be anything besides a two hour long dota/international ad
it reminds me of bronydoc more than anything else
Every movie about 'pro' gaming sucks. Non-interesting shit nobody cares about.
Every movie? What other movie about "pro gaming" is there and were they made by a company that also makes video games that spawn "pro gaming"?
did anyone at all expect this to be anything besides a two hour long dota/international ad

Well obviously they made it to promote Dota, but saying it's just a 2 hour long advertisement is not even being ignorant, but stupid.
facepunch needs to be one step ahead guys
now that esports are moderately popular its really cool to hate it now
did anyone at all expect this to be anything besides a two hour long dota/international ad

trust me, while it does promote dota in some form, it's more oriented to the 3 players journey than anything else.
dota isn't the main topic of the movie, it's the setting.
i wouldn't mind a documentary like this if it wasn't made by a gaming company
people who make this comparison sound like they've never engaged in physical activity in their lives
and it sounds like you have never engaged in competitive gaming activity in yours.

Physical sports, electronics sports, everyone sitting down watching on TV.
Well, you have Half-Life, that has very interesting development history with lots of unknown facts
Then you have Counter-Strike, you can tell a lot about it's competitive scene
There's TF2 with many "behind the scenes" moments in updates' development
WHY DOTA 2
Holy shit FP you're going to collectively go bald from stress if a free movie about a subject you don't care about legitimately makes you angry.
Seriously, the hate in here is borderline hysterical.
football players = people being payed cash to be the best at performing a task (winning a game against other people doing the same thing)
game tournaments = people awarded cash to be the best at performing a task (winning a game against other people doing the same thing)
How fucking difficult is this? Believe all you want it's a fact that it is a real thing lol
no thats not my argument. My argument is "nerds shouldnt get paid for playing video games on a stream". I take issue not only with E-sports, but with people actually making money off twitch TV. It's the stupidest shit in the world.
mind explaining why it's stupid? it's the same as people getting paid to make youtube videos. they're producing entertainment. just because it's not on TV or in movie theaters doesn't mean it's an entirely different thing.

WHY DOTA 2
As much as I am a fan of all of those, Dota is bigger than those. It's the most played game on Steam. It's not covering the development process of the game, but the competitors of The International (Which I'm pretty sure had the largest prize pool of any game tournament prior, like ever.)
If you're really comparing what this movie is going to try to be, vs. a "The making of" a good Valve game (which honestly would be really cool), then I don't think you understand what this movie is about.
