They are likely to extremely downplay the fact that the camera is always recording you. ToS shouldn't be able to sell your rights to privacy down the river without making it exceedingly apparent that you are doing so, especially when it's doing so in such a creepy and awkwardly persistent manner.
Well if it's always on, then there shouldn't be any confusion about whether it's on or not (spoilers: it's probably on)
Yeah but with phones and credit cards you can just slip a signal blocker over top. I doubt there are going to be Xbox-one cozies.
put a blanket/towel over the kinnect, or you know unplug the damn thing
uhhhh, why the fuck should this happen if you've opted in
It's going to be a clause in some bullshit 50,000 word ToS agreement that NO ONE will ever read. Microsoft should have to make a separate window that says explicitly when you purchase the Xbox One that the camera/microphone is always on and may be used for advertising and monitoring purposes.
It won't pass microsoft has too much money. It's stupid anyways as you can turn all of the features of kinect off, its just uneducated congressman throwing shit around like usual.
do you go out of your way to make shitty posts
Well if it's always on, then there shouldn't be any confusion about whether it's on or not (spoilers: it's probably on)
If it's always on it makes it all the easier to implement the requirements of the legislation, as all they need to do is make a powered cheap lcd display like on clocks.
It won't pass microsoft has too much money. Honestly, I'm asking you how much it would take for you to join everyone else in saying "fuck Microsoft"? I really want that answered.
Really Congressmen? Really? This is what you are going to do during your time in Washington? Pass a bill banning the Kinect being sold with the Xbox One? Okay, lets get some shit straight here. A. You are not being forced to buy an Xbox One, there is also the Wii U and PS4, hell even the 360, and PS3. B. You can turn off the Kinect so that it only responds to "Xbox On" C. There's a countermeasure if you don't believe points A or B called unplugging the Kinect while the Xbox is off. Simple really. This is probably one of the dumber laws I've ever seen gain bipartisan support.

B.)If it recognizes "Xbox On" it's not off. C.) The Kinect is required regardless of whether you use it or not. The console can not and will not function without it.
Here's an idea...read the thread, hell even read the thread title. This isn't just about the Xbox One.
I did, read the last potential provision. MS might have to provide a separate device without the Kinect. Kind of messes with their marketing strategy.
So a couple of guys throw together legislation that will go absolutely nowhere and probably get laughed out of the House. Nice.
C.) The Kinect is required regardless of whether you use it or not. The console can not and will not function without it.
You kind of just proved my point. Once you unplug the Kinect from the Xbox, it is no longer able to operate thus it is no longer able to record anything, assuming it was able to record stuff when it was off to begin with.

it should be called the xbox gay because only u and zach pl will buy it so u guys can kinect skype eachothers small dicks
I don't understand this. If you're recording a TV show they want a message to tell you that you're being watched? Even though you aren't? It's not like the Kinect is recording your every move and sending it to Microsoft. It listens for voice commands, and it turns off when the Xbox is off. It'll only listen to voice commands while the Xbox is on, or in sleep mode
i'm fucking done here *drops mic*, zach pl and evilan go fack yourselves (User was permabanned for this post ("alt of shrektheturd2" - postal))
its mic and camera are always running and always on i don't see why it's unreasonable to think that's weird and question it a bit.
The camera is not always on. MS has openly stated and shown that you can turn off the camera on the Kinect. And if you don't take their word or demonstration for it, point the camera at a wall or just don't buy an Xbox One.
i'm fucking done here *drops mic*, zach pl and evilan go fack yourselves
What are you doing
Why didn't they implement a simple button to turn it on like any normal company?
No clue, I'm not a PR rep.
its mic and camera are always running and always on i don't see why it's unreasonable to think that's weird and question it a bit.
I can see that it's unnecessary and shouldn't be forced, but it's no different than a laptop with a webcam and mic. No one's watching you through it. The only difference is the Xbox is listening for voice commands, only when the Xbox is on or in standby.
i'm fucking done here *drops mic*, zach pl and evilan go fack yourselves
The fuck is wrong with you?
The fuck is wrong with you?
Trying to get attention.
Ummm.... guys.... this is bigger than previously thought. While the article mentions DVRs, it does not mention how cameras and microphones are intended to be implemented soon in order to watch TV users. Washington Times
It hardly gets more Orwellian than this. New technology would allow cable companies to peer directly into television watchers’ homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements. The technology would come via the cable box, and at least one lawmaker on Capitol Hill is standing in opposition. Mass. Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano has introduced a bill, the We Are Watching You Act, to prohibit the technology on boxes and collection of information absent consumer permission.
Soo, whether you are getting an Xbox or not, if you use Cable boxes, you will be filmed.
Only the government of US of A is allowed to watch people's every move.

Placing a camera/recording device in the room for the sole intent of gathering commercial data seems pretty wrong.
