"Colour me stupid": Pen colour makes students anxious.

I think the anxiety comes from red commonly being used to grade mistakes and take points off so students associate that to not doing well enough.
I still have a hard time imagining feeling stressed at the sight of purple though.
What does it mean that I get disappointed when my marks don't come back red?
On a more serious note, what actually proves this concept? I'd happily suppose we may have some subconcious fear of red ink or perhaps even a natural disposition to feel that red is a "loud" color. However what stops that conception from shifting if we make Green or Violet or Turquoise ink the standard for "you dumbass, look at this error!"?
It's the age old stoner question of "Dude... what if stop signs like... weren't red? Would they still be stop signs?"
It's a subconscious psychological thing. We naturally associate the color red with failure when it's placed in the context of academics, because it's always used to indicate your screwups. The same would happen if teachers started using green or purple -- eventually, we a headline would pop up that says green/purple causes anxiety, for the same reason.
It might seem silly but to discredit it as people being melodramatic or looking for something to blame (as the first post (not OP) seemed to imply) is sillier.

some people here love evo-psych and biotruths till it runs contrary to their own preconceived notions
and then they'll pretentiously and without irony say they prefer science over anything else
Yeah, learning interesting things about psychology, stupid liberals
You're condescending tone makes me think you assumed I was a conservative. When you assume, you make an ass out of u & me so let's not do that anymore, shall we?

Honestly what I find even stranger isn't the red. But the fact that the majority of the papers listed are maths. Makes me wonder why do so many people fear just that.

ill clarify
i think its funny when this forum gets all hot and bothered about scientific inquiry and science, but then flat out refuses random shit when it doesn't correlate with their own world views.
its ironic and stuff

What the fuck did you just fucking assume about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

The only people I've heard say "bleeding heart liberal" non-ironically were conservatives

how does someone with such good handwriting have such terrible spelling
It's true that we're used to seeing red ink as bad news, but it is possible that it could actually be the color.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_psychology
i don't even know how to feel.
i've got both red, and blue in my title.
i hate you red.
I think I learned once that red in general is just an aggressive color, not even just in academia. So it's not necessarily that we just associate it with bad grades, but that in general the color has that effect on people.
some people here love evo-psych and biotruths till it runs contrary to their own preconceived notions

red clearly causes anxiety because when the cavemen saw their red blood they knew they were in danger duh
If they changed the color from red to something like green then that color would have the same effect.
Because that's how psychology works.
are you threatening zeke or something?
It's a natural evolutionary response to threaten people who make better arguments because in the days of the cavemen all it took is one smooth talker and you would be tricked into giving up all your food
biotruths
yeah i also read that sexual fertility was also linked to strength of arguments because back in the days of the cavemen the best arguments often won the sex/turnip judging competition which explains democracy today
As much as I dislike being handed a test covered in red marks, I hate it when teachers just give me a less-than-perfect score but don't correct or note down anything.
what did I do wrong
please explain me what I did wrong so I don't do it again
that's how learning works
yeah i also read that sexual fertility was also linked to strength of arguments because back in the days of the cavemen the best arguments often won the sex/turnip judging competition which explains democracy today
turnips are kind of red too
yeah
I was always told red represented the teacher's marking. Other colours would be when students swapped papers to mark each others' work, e.g if you wrote in black, your friend marked it in blue, then later the teacher might check it over in red. Students could use any legible colour except red, so if they told teachers to use something else it could get confusing.

my peer reviewing never involved actually marking anything. whenever we peer reviewed we would just read the paper and then talk about the content.
ARE YOU FEELING ANXIOUS YET?!
Dude, not funny! I just pissed myself in fear.
turnips are kind of red too
yeah
that's a gross generalisation
it's probably better for the students to feel a little bit anxious anyway
If they changed the color from red to something like green then that color would have the same effect.
Eh, whats your basis? many colors we perceive are actually linked to specific emotions and actions in the brain, genetically. Blue for instance, keeps you awake and speeds up perception of time. Red can slow perception of time and actually make someone wearing red seem "better" (they tested this by taking a video of a typical martial arts tourny fight and artificially switched the colors out in post processing between red and blue, and showed them to many judges.)
it's probably better for the students to feel a little bit anxious anyway
the article said it makes them place blame on the grader rather than themselves, this is probably a bad thing in most circumstances
Red pen always had the same impact for me as people who type with Capslock on - It's like they are yelling, but are unaware of the fact.
well, I just agree with the caps lock statement
garry i think we should change the color of the ban notices it makes me very anxious and uncomfortable
