Xbox One to perform online checks every 24 hours, and EVERY HOUR if playing on a separate console

So the console literally becomes a paperweight when someone else in my household is using the internet. That may not be so for everyone, but the way my internet is setup, only one device can have internet at a time.

It's on standby waiting for "Xbox On". It's not off.

Imagine this, going off a bridge. That is what xbone news are like.
I've never wanted a console to fail so hard in my life, simply so Microsoft will learn a lesson from this fiasco. Listen to the consumers, not your publishing wallet. I've been arguing over Facebook with a guy about how Steam and the Xbox One aren't comparable because it's digital vs. physical media. I'm ready to give up because I'm sensing that he's a fanboy.

Only if someone was using it literally for 24 hours straight, and in no time during that period you could connect.
"Well, we spent time trying to make this console shit... but you can stil watch tv and movies and other useless shit!.."
Just curious, if somehow someone manages to flash/crack the console, is it possible to install Linux/Windows on it? Both the Xbox One and PS4 are using a x86 architecture.
To be honest, alot of this doesn't even affect me. I don't trade in games, I don't let people borrow my games, I usually have a steady internet connection, and I usually take my own Xbox if I go out to a family's/friend's house. But damn. Been a Microsoft fan since original Xbox. Here's hoping Microsoft looks at their loyal customer's feedback before actually going through will all of this. I'm honestly looking more to the side of coming back to PC, but I'll just have to wait and see what goes on.
With all the stuff the Xbone can do, it might as well just buy itself
what if a really bad storm hits and knocks your power off for more than a day? would that mean your games are gone because you couldn't have the online check?
Think it will only prevent you from playing until you get internet again. But if you want to complain, go ahead. Remember, one of the MS people did say "deal with it" when people were complaining about the always-on bullshit.
But lets just say the servers are hacked and shut down, what will MS do? Or they decide to shut down servers, what will happen? I expect they will probably release a patch to make sure your Xbox One is not a useless paperweight.
Realistically, if the servers are hacked and shut down, they will probably fix it. If they decide to shut down the servers, I expect their response to be, well, to quote that MS employee who apparently had to leave, "deal with it."

He got fired for that, I believe.
I just realized that Xbone is the actual abbreviation.
I thought everyone was making a joke about how boned it is.

I heard, but still, that is the one thing you should never tell your potential customers. People might not have internet, or if they do, its either shitty(other countries and in the rural US where dial-up or satellite is the only options), costly, or both.
I bet Microsoft has alot of amazing games exclusive for their console, and that will be their ace up their sleeves. That will make people not give a crap and buy their console anyway. So sad... We'll see on E3.

While I know you said you're not interested in the Xbox One, it's that attitude in the first couple of sentences that has me worried. "It doesn't affect me" is such a cornerstone of consumer apathy that it steadily leads to us getting fucked over more and more because people as a whole won't just say "NO. Enough is enough and we're tired of your bullshit."
Hell, Kotaku of all websites said it well earlier:
I've seen some very similar responses to today's Xbox One news, whether it be the mandatory 24-hour "check-in" or the restrictions on game lending. It's a defensive sort of reply, brought up by somebody who doesn't see the news as downright terrible.
"But they're still letting us trade games!"
"We can still play games if we login once a day!"
All without a hint of irony.
It makes me so sad I can barely bring myself to talk about it.
Is this what the last decade of video gaming has conditioned us to becoming? A market that simply trudges from one restriction to the next, shuffling our way along a road that ends with video game publishers getting the absolute maximum amount of money from us for the absolute minimum of effort?
...
When did the consumer lose so much power? When did the market, the force that should be dictating how these companies behave by refusing to put up with anti-consumer measures and shaping policies with our wallets, roll over and say "have your way with me"?
The answer is we did it ten years ago. And five. And yesterday. And today. We love video games so much, this wonderful pastime, hobby and artform, that whenever a company that makes money off them places a load on our backs, we endure it, because we're willing to put up with it to get to the games we want to play.
As they drop each load, one by one, we barely protest, because each small weight on its own seems worth it. It's only when you look back, and see how much you're now carrying just to purchase and play a video game in 2013, that you realise, wow, that's kind of messed up.
Something I don't think anyone mentioned here about this - Microsoft is going to need to keep their authentication servers in a goddamn nuclear bunker with the best hacker protection that exists, because as soon as it comes out, there's gonna be thousands of hackers trying to take that thing down. And if they do, Microsoft is just gonna straight up die.
fuck me i hope you don't live in a rural area and plan to buy an xbox cos you're fucked now
Is UK rural really that bad?
So basically what Microsoft has just done (other than being anti-consumer to an almost moustache-twirling degree) is guarantee that the Xbox One will NEVER be a legacy console. Unless they come up with a patch (and at this point I don't trust them to), once those authentication servers go down you're going to have a very expensive paperweight and a whole bunch of useless discs.
I'm trying to look at this situation as detached and reasonable as I can but it is almost putting me at a loss for words how ABSURD Microsoft is being.
Don't worry, in 2030 you will be able to re-buy all your favourite Xbox One games in the form of Windows 10 apps!

Yeah, I can't wait for the next CoD with 1 new feature, more Kinect, more Forza, more Halo, more Gears, and hey, is there a new IP that MS has? Is that also Kinect?
I admit, some of them are interesting(hint, one is made by Rare, but with the previous games made by Rare being, not at par with their old work), but its not impressive to the people who don't care for Kinect, Forza, Halo, or Gears of War. I mean, even some people don't care about Fable now since Fable 3. If MS shows amazing exclusives, I will be surprised.

This would be funnier if I didn't think it was actually possible. The HD remasters that Sony has been pushing at least make some sense because those require a reworking of the game engine to work on different hardware, but man...re-buying games that I already own just because the old authentication servers were taken offline...that's just depressing.
Not saying it's a 100% guarantee to play out that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
They just don't care anymore huh?
I don't understand...
How? How can this be real? How can Microsoft produce such a devastatingly disappointing launch event and still continue to pump out idiotic idea after idiotic idea? It's like they're doing this out of spite. "Oh, you thought it was bad before? Well look at this! It's even worse than you thought!"
I feel like this should be satire.
" an online check is required to ensure that you still own the copy of the game you're playing"
Is this implying games need to be rented/ bought multiple times to play over a prolonged period?
It's like Microsoft is deliberately making this as bad as it can be.

Nah, it's basically verifying the license hasn't been transferred to someone else. Still total bullshit though; there's no justifiable reason to force consumers to jump through hoops like this on a console. This is basically all of the negatives of PC gaming with none of the positives so far.
