hope they return towards 2033 style gameplay in the third game rather than the simplified and boring last light & redux style, but it's probably not going to happen
I though the gameplay in last light was an update, what did you dislike about it?

shooting felt very different and much easier with simplified reloads etc (this is why 2033 redux is unplayable for me). it's a bit difficult to describe but if you play 2033 and then one of the reduxes or last light back to back the difference is obvious. weapons also have red dots etc available rather than having to rely on iron sights.
stealth was a binary shadow based system rather than the challenging system in 2033
throwing knives required you to hit the enemy in unarmored areas or they would just bounce off and alert them. in last light they're a cheap instant kill button.
ranger hardcore mode was absolutely ruined in last light (they also made you pay money for it)

it wasn't all bad though, mask wiping was a brilliant feature

2033 Stealth was actually fairly broken.
Last Light Stealth was too easy.

It was kinda amusing stealthing through an entire and listening to the NPCs have conversations. More so when you had multiple characters all voiced by Steven Blum talking to each other.
I also prefer the 2033 system compared to Last Light.
My biggest gripe among all other things is the graphical updates making everything look kinda cartoony and the changes to the mutant designs.
I dont know who decided it was a great idea to make the mutants all roided up and more monster-like compared to the skinny and more familiar animal-based mutants of 2033.
I think there's one thing we can all agree on. Khan should be in the next Metro game. To me, he's like if you combined Captain Price with Tom Bombadil. A wise warrior-poet with a badass name and fantastic facial hair.
