• Valve's new GSLT ban wave, ban everyone on the same IP

Did valve bring in some external company to help protect profits or something? This seems heavy handed and short sighted, its like they don't care about their reputation anymore.
so now innocent people at colleges and other such large housing facilities will be banned, just so valve can keep pumping out cosmetics. nice.
What's that? A sale on CS:GO? How convenient!
I guess I can understand their intents with this crap but like did they not think about the fact that it's possible more than one person can be under the same IP? Like gaming cafes, colleges, and houses with siblings, I'd probably remember that shit before I'd institute something like this. And just to understand, if one person gets banned on a CS:GO server, anyone can get a cooldown sharing the same IP? Like getting banned for too many kicks or TKing too much is something that can cause this? Or is it related to the modded servers out there?

I am sure that they won't even flinch even if they "accidently" would spread trojans/malware through Steam for a week.

You have to get a token and connect a server to a Steam account now in CSGO. If a server breaks the rules for server operators, their token is banned meaning they can no longer host a server.
Killing community servers via IP bans meanwhile allowing people make 100 and 1 accounts while cheating. I mean the later one nets you money because they have to buy new game every time so I guess that makes sense.
I never thought I would see the day where facepunch criticizes steam and praises origin

That's stupid as heck.
I never thought I would see the day where facepunch criticizes steam and praises origin
I thought it was pretty well-established by now that Steam support was shit and Origin's was better.
I thought it was pretty well-established by now that Steam support was shit and Origin's was better.
There was always the contingent of valve loyalists who would say "no but EA = SATAN, shut up" or the unicorn who got bad support from EA and good support from valve and the once in a life occurance that would be colored their opinion
I never thought I would see the day where facepunch criticizes steam and praises origin
I feel that it's kinda ironic that people on here are starting to loathe Valve for their bad decisions considering that it was probably only a couple years ago when a bunch of people on this forum got pissy at someone just for politely saying that he preferred Bungie over Valve.
The thing about an ip ban is that it's only going to permanently affect the people who did nothing wrong Anyone who's hacking anyway should know how to get around that [editline]25th February 2016[/editline]
I feel that it's kinda ironic that people on here are starting to loathe Valve for their bad decisions considering that it was probably only a couple years ago when a bunch of people on this forum got pissy at someone just for politely saying that he preferred Bungie over Valve.
Is it really that ironic because valve has been sucking cocks for years now
I'm mostly supportive of the VAC ban system but IP based bans are a fucking joke lol tons of people are going to get hit because they used an open router, possibly
I'm in support of vac bans as well but not mass IP address bans. I do believe if you're cheating your ruinning it for everyone else so fucking ban the douche bags! No mercy
I never thought I would see the day where facepunch criticizes steam and praises origin
I still think origin is P. shit for its selection of games ironically steam has too many games to find any good ones at all so maybe they're pretty even [editline]25th February 2016[/editline]
I feel that it's kinda ironic that people on here are starting to loathe Valve for their bad decisions considering that it was probably only a couple years ago when a bunch of people on this forum got pissy at someone just for politely saying that he preferred Bungie over Valve.
that was because he shoe-horned it into a topic about skyrim and was known to post about nothing but Halo https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?p=42985805 that was way long ago though so whatever
I'm in support of vac bans as well but not mass IP address bans. so is this not IP banning the servers and not the clients or am I missing something here? most servers have static IPs so..
As long as your IP isn't Dynamic, or you log in to your steam account on an IP that's been banned, or someone who is banned uses your IP, then yeah, you are pretty much fine.
I think it's stupid, but let's not make this seem worse than it is. You only get banned from creating GSLT servers if you share an IP with someone who gets banned. Dynamic IPs are pretty much always constrained to a single block. For example, I know that my Dynamic IP is always going to fall within 24.10.128.0/17 because of where I live, and my ISP. This means it would be extremely rare for someone who ALSO makes GSLT servers to get banned, and for me go get their IP near the same time. I'm sure there's also a cooldown time, as in the IP has to have been shared within the last 3 weeks or something, which depending on your ISP, could be the same amount of time your modem is assigned its IP. [editline]25th February 2016[/editline]
so is this not IP banning the servers and not the clients or am I missing something here? most servers have static IPs so..
If your server is banned from making GSLT tokens (What you need to host public CS:GO servers) then your account is set on cooldown, and your ability to make GSLT tokens is revoked. This now applies to anybody also on your IP, as to avoid people making a ton of account just for their GSLT tokens. Most people using steam accounts have dynamic IPs assigned by their ISP, which is why people are upset.
That makes more sense, although given its just a cooldown(which makes sense!), how many people on your same IP will also make gameservers?
What The Fuck is going on with Valve/Steam right now
I know this should probably belong in the unpopular opinions thread but I'm genuinely beginning to dislike Valve. They either spend too much time trying to think things through or they pull the trigger in a knee jerk reaction. They're a massive company that acts like a small tech startup and all the problems that come along with a tech startup are still there. I don't mind companies that value individuality as much as Valve does, but for fucks sake they need at least SOME sort of management when it comes to their business. Everything is done individually meaning the unpopular but critical parts of their business get left in the dust or are rarely if ever taken care of. Maybe I'm just frustrated or something but they need to have a paradigm shift or something soon because they have been fucking up fairly often lately.

I knew I had my reasons to continue disliking CS:GO... however, I'm disliking Valve less and less.
I still think origin is P. shit for its selection of games
The only reason I use Origin is for games that I can't get on Steam (yet?) such as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Sims 2
Valve is longer the buyer-friendly company they were once both endlessly praised and well known for. They only care about the profits. My reason in thinking this is because I once cheated and was VAC banned from CS:GO myself, and I fell hook line and sinker for their trap, admittedly at my own ignorance. Even if Valve found a way, they would and never will permanently or effectively take care of the hacking problem in CS:GO. It would be bad for business. Their current model of having an effective means of detecting hacks and then wave delay banning periods of 2 weeks to 6 months later is inflating the profits of CS:GO by what I believe to be a considerable amount. Hackers and players who are bad at the game and frustrated with the game's skill curve will more often than not repurchase CS:GO while it is on sale if they're banned. Cheat providers, private and public alike, buy massive bundles of games like CS:GO while they're on sale to give out or sell later. Some dedicated cheaters that I know personally have purchased CS:GO six times. Valve has able to get a consumer to buy the same product six times, admittedly through no fault but the consumer's. But because of this, you will always end up playing with cheaters. Not every game, but enough to leave a sour taste in your mouth, at least after the match in question. And the way this ties into their GSLT bans and their seemingly hostile community attitude is that their hack and VAC detection is most effective and strongest on their community and competitive servers. If looking at it from a purely profit standpoint, a popular modded community server that is able to be enjoyed by players of a wide range of skill levels/ceilings/whathaveyous is very bad for business, because now a player will enjoy their one copy of the game, instead of potentially becoming frustrated and purchasing a second or third copy after hacking and inevitably getting banned. Too long; didn't read version: Valve is an evil corp, at least EA support replies semi-punctually. :tinfoil:
This was posted in the csgo mailing list.
Vitaliy Genkin <vitaliy@valvesoftware.com> 5:33 PM (5 hours ago) to csgo_servers Recently we have banned multiple Game Server Login Tokens because servers using them were violating the guidelines. All servers determined to be in violation of the guidelines are tracked via their GSLT to the owner’s Steam User Account. We ban all of the existing GSLTs of this Steam User Account, and all existing GSLTs of all Steam User Accounts sharing the same phone number. We also mark this Steam User Account, and all existing Steam User Accounts sharing the same phone number, as ineligible to generate any more GSLTs. The phone number gets flagged to prevent any new Steam User Accounts from using it to generate more GSLTs. As of the most recent update, this Steam User Account and all existing Steam User Accounts sharing the same phone number will also get an in-game cooldown for a GSLT violation at the time of the GSLT ban. To answer some frequently asked questions among server operators: after the introduction of GSLTs, we no longer ban servers by IP addresses, we do not ban accounts based on shared computers, and we do not ban players for playing on servers that violate the guidelines. We have been monitoring tokens of servers operators complaining about their GSLT bans, and haven’t encountered a case yet where a GSLT ban was applied incorrectly. You can find the server guidelines here: http://blog.counter-strike.net/index.php/server_guidelines/
So where they ever actually banning people based on IPs in this case or was this another instance of people spreading false information?

Maybe I'm just frustrated or something but they need to have a paradigm shift or something soon because they have been fucking up fairly often lately.
It isn't an unpopular opinion and you guys all know it. In fact, I'd say it's pretty popular right now to say: "Valve is a shitty company." "I dislike Valve." "Valve was always a shitty company." "Valve doesn't make games anymore." "Valve isn't working on HL3." Seriously. I'm pretty sure the general feeling on the matter is that Valve isn't the company they used to be anymore. With so little employees, I wonder who the hell at Valve is pushing the stupid decisions there. I mean there has to be at least a few people working there thinking, "the internet is constantly getting angry at us, maybe we should fix that...and communicate with them about it..." Their ever growing need for money is the most confusing to me. I bet if they stopped selling games on steam right now they could probably coast for a decade on what money they have now. So why are they pushing for micro-transactions and shit like that? Are the employees pocketing the money? Is Gabe pocketing the money? Did the Greece Financial Minister brainwash them? Are they planning to give Vives to entire planet? Buy out HTC? Doesn't make any sense to me. /rant
Sitting back and being angry about it won't solve anything. If we want to take action we've got to directly pressure Valve.
This was posted in the csgo mailing list.
a bit harsh if it is a permanent gslt ban but not at all like what some posts would lead you to believe, if this is true
So what the fuck can even be done about this? Now I'm pretty paranoid about this kind of stuff.
I never thought I would see the day where facepunch criticizes steam and praises origin
I've liked Origin more for several years. A functioning support system where a real person will reply almost instantly, community managers that actually give a shit, a much better client, etc. etc. As others have already said, the downside is that they have way too few games for sale. If EA step their shit up in that regard, it would definitely put some fire beneath Valve's ass and could potentially result in them fixing their bullshit. Or it would just result in them doing nothing, and then EA would probably crush them
