Being scolded for it by the teachers, fine. Getting suspended? Being forced to turn over login info?
What right do they have to check her private email?
Anti-Bullying measures: Improperly applied.
i would have told them to piss off. they have no right to that information.
She's a twelve-year-old girl who's been conditioned to dumbly obey authority figures her entire life.
If my school asked me for my facebook login info, I would flat out tell them "No."
Why should they have the credentials of my facebook account over something on the internet?
At least not put the words in a wall of text.
Obviously she is a ticking time bomb waiting to blow. God is protecting the children in this school.
Freedom of speech at its finest.
This isn't news. This has been happening for years. Three years ago one student at my school was expelled for threatening to murder a teacher on Facebook and, to be fair, it's not something one jokes about.
There's a difference between threatening and talking dirty or about risky shit.
i mean who hasn't talked dirty or spoke about shit that could get you in trouble on facebook, it's inevitable on a social networking site
My friend got searched by 8 cops because he recited a lyric that included a mac-eleven under his seat on facebook.
lmao apparently saying you hate someone is "bullying"
If it was in the student handbook that saying derogatory comments about the school/its staff online gets you in trouble, then she deserved what she got. My high school had a rule like this and enforced it. Same thing to people complain about things that were stated in a Terms of Service.

the fact that it's a rule makes it okay? thanks mr. appealtoauthority
Our school says to students that they can access all of their information on Facebook including chats and the like. It's funny because the students believe them.
Fucking drama! That school is pretty retarded. This is probably why the country has crazy ass laws and shit being made, schools are not truly teaching kids about freedom. The preach that anything that isn't under their ideas of morals is immoral. Like it or not, schools build our character to an extent, and it seems that too much shit is being built in to kids characters.
The only time my school district got involved in Facebook is when students were getting harassed on some of those "Smash or Pass" aka "Hot or Not" pages.
This, however - there is no victim here. They should fuck off.
All I have to say is:
Violation of privacy, unfair treatment, violations of freedom of speech etc. Bad school district, not going there.
Good thing I dont use facebook.
The ACLU claims the punishments were a violation of the student’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech and Fouth Amendment right to freedom from unreasonable search and seizure.
“Students do not shed their First Amendment rights at the school house gate,”
It's true. You ARE still protected when your at school - just not as much.
This is violation of first amendment - it was said off school grounds. Even a hand-book saying you can't will not be able to stop you (unless they force you to sign it)
However, if it was on school grounds this would be an entirely different case.
forced by a school administrator to hand over her Facebook and email login information
She's stupid, her fault on this one for giving it.

not really
the administration used intimidation to get their way. they should know better, not the kid
That's my school, holy fucking shit.
Hey check this shit out:
My boss can suck my dick till his neck breaks.
Livin' on the edge.
not really

They should both know better.
I didn't say the administration wasn't stupid. Because they are.
...but the girl should have also known about the most basic rights given. What is elementary school teaching people now?
Wow. Glad I graduated before Facebook became huge and caused shit like this
What is elementary school teaching people now?
how to perform well on tests and respect authority
I've had this happen to me, I've been suspended for this and shit. It's real.

Saying you hate someone isn't necessarily a derogatory comment in my opinion. Now if you called them a piece of shit, that's a derogatory comment.
And "trouble" shouldn't mean something to the extent of making her give up her login info. I am really fucking glad my school district doesn't pull anything like that... though their anti-bullying measures are absolute shit while they still try to actually make it look like they're trying. They've been sued several times thanks to their negligence.

Make fake account for someone
Spam shit
Sit back and watch the fun
Why do schools insist upon being parents?
Because a lot of the parents couldn't be bothered.
At my school it says in the handbook that you can be disciplined in school for what you say online, but I've never actually heard of anyone getting in trouble for it. I always thought it was one of those rules that's only on the books to scare then in to not doing it.
What is elementary school teaching people now?
Schools in general are terrible now, they always seem to be trying to grasp at more power, even over stuff outside of school
So much that at my school we're given a booklet called our Rights and Responsibilities, which is basically a euphemism for a school handbook telling you your lack of rights

The ACLU’s lawsuit says that the girl was later forced by a school administrator to hand over her Facebook and email login information after she was accused of chatting online with another young student about sex.
I would of told them I was taught from an early age never to give my password away.
