The incident occurred at the 24th Street trolley station in National City and was reported at about 5 a.m.
The teen apparently reached inside the receiving slot of the vending machine in an attempt to steal a soda. At that point, his arm became stuck inside the slot. A trolley rider saw the teen trapped in the machine and called for help.
Police, firefighters, paramedics and trolley security responded.
"Initially, we thought if we could get a hold of somebody to come out that had a key that we would be able to open up the door and access the machine and do very little damage, but nobody had the key," said Michael Lafreniere, who is with the National City Fire Department.
The rescue took about an hour. Firefighters used axes, crowbars and an air chisel to try and dismantle the machine to free the teen. They eventually used a rotary saw to cut the lock on the door of the machine and the teen was extricated from the tight opening. He was then taken to a waiting ambulance to be checked out.
The teen's arm did show signs of scraping. He said his arm was sore but that he is OK.
After medics released the teen, he was taken into custody by police, who said he may face charges of petty theft.
I can't say I've never tried it.
But it was those $1 toy machines for me.
Fucking brilliant
Why can't you guys just shoplift?
For a second I thought that officer had his tazer out, not his radio. I was like fuck Yeah teach him a lesson
Has he never watched The Simpsons?
that must have been pretty embarrassing.

I thought it was a gun at first.
Okay maybe that wasn't a good idea.
I always wondered what it would be like to be caught shoplifting or stealing from something, apparently the police get involved and take out there rotary saws.
I bet his parents get sued for the damage to that soda machine. When they ask him why he did it I just hope he says "All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi and the machine wouldn't give it to me."
Kid needs friends. Real friends would have torn the thing apart for him
Wow.
It's such a classic, that I never thought anyone would actually try it, let alone actually get stuck doing it.
For some reason, the sheer amount of wanton destruction used on that poor machine to free the kid just made me laugh aloud, though. Personally, I think they should have just left him there until someone with a key came by to free him.
If he's stupid enough to actually do that, I think he can wait a few hours with his arm stuck in the god-damn machine. :v:

That's no reason to reach in to the machine, especially since that one is labelled "Coca-Cola".
There was some horror movie I saw when I was a little kid where a dude bought a cola and it got stuck in the machine, so he reached in there to grab it and the machine closed on his hand and cut it off or something. I've been afraid of sticking my hands in soda machines since

With that being said, I want to hear him say all he wanted was a Pepsi all the more, since he did reach into a Coca-Cola vending machine.
Honestly, that'd just complete the story for me.
Makes me think of this.

I instantly thought of the "Darwin's Award" movie
Coca-cola is disgusting
Used to get tons of sodas that way with my friends, so easy.
Lesson learnt? Lesson learnt.
haha he looks like one of those "rad kids/dudes" from low budget kids movies skateboard and all. I bet he's going to give his principle a wedgie or start a food fight next
I think the police shouldn't charge him hes already hilarious learned his lesson
Homer? Are you just holding onto the cans?
I thought sticky fingered = he'd been fingering a girl and that's why he got stuck
I then thought the picture of him was a picture of the girl
More like the kid was sticky and he was also fingered
Are people really this desperate these days? Trying to steal a soda can? What the fuck.
You came to the wrong shoppingcenter, motherfucker.

Kids trying to get something for free are desperate? No, they're fucking kids, they just want to get it for free.
Dude looks like he just timetravelled from the mid-90's

How to open a vending machine:
Step 1. Use assorted power tools in an attempt to destroy the machine
Step 2. Cut the lock open
