-CROSSES ORBITAL PATH OF THE EARTH- -IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT-
the day after my 23rd birthday....one hell of a birthday candle to blow out, but don't worry guys; i got this.
We need Bruce Willis
Our atmosphere and magnetic field are more bad ass then you think. There is a reason we were able to become this evolved haha
This is why we need to be multi planetary and start pumping tons of money into space projects, including asteroid defense and NOT pointless wars. One day an asteroid really will come along with a high chance of impact, and we need to be prepared.
I do agree on putting more money towards space projects and less on military spending but... lol asteroid defense
Gotta love sensationalism, a "good chance" by their definition is anything above one hundredth of a percent. I realize those are pretty incredible odds given the amount of space in space, but c'mon.
That "good chance" is 0.022%.
Worst case scenario: It hits a major city Best case scenario: It hits Rick Santorum's house. Likely scenario: It hits a forest somewhere in Canada or Russia.
Fixed because other sensationalist headlines have proven Santorum worthy of a Asteroid impact on his smug face.
Fuck yes*, I can't die a virgin.
Fixed that for you
Fuck no, I can't die a virgin.
Go to prison
I hope Google gets it on camera.
Paint would affect the asteroid’s ability to reflect sunlight, changing its temperature and altering its spin. The asteroid would stalk off its current course, but this could also make the boulder even more dangerous when it comes back in 2056, Aleksandr Devaytkin, the head of the observatory in Russia’s Pulkovo, told Izvestia.
I'd like to know what they mean by "comes back in 2056". [editline]a[/editline] Ignore that, I just went full-retard for a few minutes there.
we need to build more lazerz [editline]4th March 2012[/editline]
I'd like to know what they mean by "comes back in 2056".
it means that the asteroid orbits around the sun like every other asteroid?
As if we don't have the god damn weapons required to pulverize a 60-meter asteroid :v:
Well at least if it does hit Earth (hopefully somewhere unpopulated), it might spur the governments of the world into some sort of real action as far as producing a legitimate countermeasure.
As if we don't have the god damn weapons required to pulverize a 60-meter asteroid :v:
Intergalactic Ballistic Missile or IGBM for short.
Awesome my debate resolve is asteroid deflection and detection so this should help us [editline]4th March 2012[/editline]
Nuke it.
And irradiate it so when it still crashes into the earth in chunks the effects will be worse. The best thing to do to alter its corset is to launch 1-5 ton slugs at it to change the orbit tragetory slightly. But we'd have to do that now to see the effects
fucking gave me a heart attack, thank god it's unlikely it'll collide
Well at least if it does hit Earth (hopefully somewhere unpopulated), it might spur the governments of the world into some sort of real action as far as producing a legitimate countermeasure.
And it might have iron or other yummy minerals.

Altering its spin wont do much since its already traveling quite fast in space so a real significant spin change will probably alter its course. But still, do we have any physics or astronomy experts who can give an opinion?
How many times have asteroids come to the point that we think its going to hit Earth? They never materialize.
As I said before, lets all hope it hits Rick Santorum's house and not anything else. Also, to stop it: Put two nuclear explosives in the right places on the asteroid and make it orbit earth for thousands of years :D
Maybe if the asteroid hit the moon in the right way, it'll push it towards Earth just enough that it's no longer getting further away from us, saving the planet's fragile gravitational equilibrium over the next several million years.

Time to try out those fancy-schmancy new railguns.
:saddowns:
This gave me chills, it's really amazing even if it would exterminate every form of life on earth. (the one that's being referred to is the size of a football field though) [editline]4th March 2012[/editline]
That "good chance" is 0.022%.
When dealing with things like this, that's quite high. [editline]4th March 2012[/editline] I know it's kinda irrelevant, but this stuff is just amazing.
This registers a 0 on the Torino scale and a -4.01 on the Palermo scale. In other words, the chances of this asteroid actually doing something is extremely small and there really is no need to worry.
