Wasn't it the Dutch who did that first?
I wouldn't be surprised as the Dutch were quite capable maritime traders, but I checked wikipedia and it looks like Nevil Maskelyne, the Astronomer Royal, who came up with the idea and caused it to be popular.
So they are building a very tall building funded by the Saudi binLaden Group in their most popular city....it'd be a shame if someone flew a plane into it...
stop posting
Brits came first.
No one uses GMT anymore for anything precise, anyway. It's UTC/UT1, based on TAI now, which is based on the same Timezone, but is a coordination between atomic clocks and very long baseline interferometry observations of distant quasars.
It looks like someone scribbled all over Big Ben.

Just wait until theres no more oil left in there country.
It looks like someone scribbled all over Big Ben.
and made it bigger
What's the purpose of this thing? Changing the timezones is out of the question, and reminding people when to pray who've probably got it down pretty well by now- seems pointless and flashy. I feel like the money going into this clock could go into something more useful, like a convenience store, or some schools, but I doubt they'd ever think of something like that when grade-A stuff like this keeps rolling in.
Yeah, fuck no. I don't want the stain of religion on any more pages of history.
Stop.. MECCA TIME

USA' motto is "In God We Trust", and various countries have built tons of churches when Christianity was a big thing. I say let them enjoy their tower, and so what if they want to praise Allah with it? But trying to impose a tower scribbled with Allah's name and with flashy prayer warnings yourself as a time standard seems like a silly idea.
GMT won't be replaced.
Cool, my timezone shall now be Mecca+1
It all seems like an expensive device to try and make Islam dominant.
Unless the clock face opens up and missiles shoot out, take your "AAA-RABS BE TAKIN OVER" conspiracies elsewhere. Whenever someone builds something big they say they want it to become the world's premiere mall or train station or whatever. It makes sense that the people building a giant clock would say that they want it to be the world's premiere clock.

They may not be conspiring to take over the world, but they are delusional.
most Saudis do think they are the centre of the earth
"Most blacks are criminals" See how horrible that sounds?
"Most blacks are criminals" See how horrible that sounds?
Nice comparison but remember we're talking about Saudi Arabia, not Arabs or Muslims in general. It doesn't even have to be all of Saudi Arabia, just the lunatics in charge as the rich-poor gap is absurd. You really don't have to defend the country which is a shining light for oppression of women, excecution of gays and all around religious idiocy.
I don't care I will always use GMT +1 .

Typical tasteless sheikhs. More proof that money won't buy you class.
It strikes me as a rather arrogant move. "We have made a big clock, so therefore everyone should follow our time zone".
"Most blacks are criminals" See how horrible that sounds?
Most Americans are fat.
Most Americans are fat.
Weight is quantifiable so blanket statements are fine if they're true. (Your statement, however, is wrong because the percentage of overweight people in the US is about 40%)
Stop! Mecca time.
I'm an imam, five times I'll hollah Time to pray in the name of Allah Cause Muhammed (upon him be peace) Married his seven-year-old niece And Gabriel (as in Mary) Told him stories but it got real hairy Meccan tribes tried to fuck him up But Muhammed's followers gave them the bump Bump bump bump bump bump bump bump bump Bump bump bump bump bump bump bump bump So everybody when I beckon Get out your mats and Pray to Mecca
Saudi Arabia has been rated Clocks.
The clock will don text reading "in the Name of Allah" running beneath the clock faces in the local script as well as 21,000 green and white lights that flash five times daily to call the faithful to prayer

Hopes to replace Greenwich with "Mecca Time"
:colbert: Can you do something that doesn't involve religion?
I don't care I will always use GMT +1 .
Until Daylight Savings time, or are you just gonna move back and forth between England and France?
The arrogance, it burns.... It was a damn good try though. Impressive clock.
Are there even any other big building in Mecca? Because this thing by itself is bigger than most skyscrapers
