All that technology and it can only dive in excess of 500ft? I was expecting 5 miles!

The average ocean depth is 4.3 kilometers (2.65 miles)
Yes lets dive straight into magma, that will do the trick.
Typhoon class is 574 ft 2 in.
Not the mention it's 20 some nuclear missiles... And I think the akula class' can dive 600m (almost 2,000 feet).

Big sub, big target. We should just invest in tons of tiny subs that are ICBM capable. Good luck catching that. But I suppose it is quite an engineering marvel.
OP they need 5 chefs to feed the 98 person crew.
Needs to be painted yellow
Give this man 10000 agree's [editline]15th December 2010[/editline]
Submarines are so cool.
I want to make my own sub to live in :l
I know it can kill a man, I'm not sure on the exact pressure, just saying something 12 stories high and 291ft long should be the king of the sea diving where it likes and going where it wants.
You make it sound like it's easy to make giant hollow cans go to the bottom of the ocean. Remove the propellers and fission reactor and install a antimatter reactor and some FTL engines plz.. thanks
the awesome 7,400-tonne sub will be wheeled from her shed and lowered into the wet dock for further outfitting and testing
True British engineering - Building a 7,400 tonne submarine in a shed.
Hindenburg II
This time, it floats. That's a really big ass submarine though.
What is a football pitch. Are we talking about foot fairy soccer, which they call football?
As if Lacrosse is any more manlier?
Eh I don't know, as technology advances, the offensive power becomes much greater than the defensive one. Huge subs (as huge aircraft carriers) are way to expensive and way too big of a target. Still awesome though.
(...) to keep the 98 crew — it has not yet been decided if this will include women — alive in time of crisis.
What, no women? IT IS A CRISIS ALREADY!
"Crew will eat 18,000 sausages ... for breakfast ... on a 10-week patrol" They will never eat another sausage again.
"Crew will eat 18,000 sausages ... for breakfast ... on a 10-week patrol" They will never eat another sausage again.
That, and if they don't have any women on the crew, it's going to be the biggest sausage fest ever.
Sure, it's fucking big, but that's not what's special about it. Its technology!
Oh my fucking god. Awesome.
What makes it even better, is that HMS Astute is already completed and another 5 and on the way.
Too bad it doesn't have any of the ballistic missiles.
Not really. That doesn't fit in with it's role as an anti-vessel submarine. The fact that it carries cruise missiles capable of hitting land targets is a big enough bonus. We have a completely different class of submarine for carrying ballistic missiles.
I want a Starbucks in that sub.
Fuck Starbucks, we can have TEN FORWARD!
Big, black, hard, and full of seamen.
i wonder if they serve some subs within that sub that'll be tits, i love subs
These will be really useful in the middle east...:downs:
Gotta love HMS Ambush's motto: "Hide and Seek".
These will be really useful in the middle east...:downs:
I'll assume this is a dig at the MoD, to which I reply: HMS Ambush was ordered in 1997. The Afghanistan War started in 2001. Go figure.
These will be really useful in the middle east...:downs:
Actually they can be, smart ass. Cruise into the Mediterranean and they'll have the range to knock out alot of valuable strategic targets.
How the hell can you detect a ship 3000 miles away underwater?? Can sound even travel that far underwater?
How the hell can you detect a ship 3000 miles away underwater?? Can sound even travel that far underwater?
They have this radar/sonar thingy that sends out like this pulse wave or whatever. So fucking powerful, but I heard it's bad for the whales. They can travel like 500 miles per day. They would be great for blockades or threat deterrents. Like if China was having hissy pissy fit, send one of these submarines over there and China will shut the fuck up real fast.
All that technology and it can only dive in excess of 500ft? I was expecting 5 miles!
It's rated to 500ft. It can probably go much deeper than that if really necessary.
Really cool to see some new huge-ass submarines. Still, on account of being greater in size, speed and max diving depth (574 ft; 27 knots; 1,300 ft), the Typhoon class remains the coolest (or at least largest!) nuclear submarine :v: This thing is almost twice as big as the OP submarine (unless the figures in the picture were way off): The Typhoon is quite dated however (taken into commission in 1981, currently one remains active), and it's being replaced by a new totally massive submarine; the Borei class.
