No matter what the contents are, it deserves to be released.

I don't know why you're all waiting for a password. The whole point of the insurance file is that if Wikileaks or Assange is compromised the password is released and the info gets out anyway which dissuades governments from trying to kill Assange or take down Wikileaks. Hence the word insurance.
So if the password does get released that means that either Assange has been killed or Wikileaks is somehow destroyed or compromised.
So any release will probably not be the password to the insurance file, it'll probably be another leak. I don't know why they'd destroy any protection the insurance file provides by releasing the password randomly or without provocation. They'll be fucked if they do anyways.

Yeah I figured that as well. I recently realized that this insurance file was released in July and has absolutely nothing to do with the supposed "world changing" leak.
I like to think of the insurance file as the brief case from Pulp Fiction.
Whatever is in it, contains the power to change anything (from what it seems like)
What's wrong with the government having its own secrets.

Freedom of Information Act for USA.

There are notable exceptions to this, mainly concerning foreign relations or national security (and since this file deals with foreign relations, you can see where the exception comes into play.)

Oh.
M'kay.
A person is smart, people are dumb. People should be left in the dark about SOME things.
When the password comes out, somebody should summarize the 2GB of text documents into a few sentences so I can read it.

Not really, no. If people cant handle and act rationally to bad news, then that's no reason to deprive other people of it.

Or if people act rationally and handle the news, but in a way that harms the ability for a nation to function.
I'd say that's just too bad. It's not part of life to sit around idly-by while powerful forces in the world withhold really, really bad news that is the product of their greed or incompetence. Nor is it anybody's job to decide whats best for another person. Information should be out there for analysis, end of story.
I know I might be asking a stupid question, but how do they manage to leak all this information? It's always been a mistery for me.
In other words, how information gets leaked, especialy information of these proportions.

Someone in the government is handing them the information anonymously most likely.
Interesting
The password is ce54d3a8af370213d23fcbfe8cddc8619a0734c.
At least, that's what I've heard.

How come someone from the government is cooperating with them?
Do you think Julian's parents are concerned?
How come someone from the government is cooperating with them?
The "government" is not a mindset. Obviously somebody in a governmental position thinks that people should know about the information.
The file is a two gigabyte size .txt that consists entirely of WERGWERGWERGWERGWERG... ad infinitum.
Well I downloaded the insurance, looking forward to whatever's inside
Is Assange in hiding?
Or does he have to keep a set of documents passworded at all times to remain alive?
Last I heard he was in the UK.
I would assume that multiple people have the key for the insurance files, and in the event that something goes wrong (Wikileaks gets taken down (properly), Assange gets arrested etc) they would publish it.

The US might just shut down the internets! And destroy television satellites!
And any communication. Just to hide what they don't want leaked.
I demand all of you to shred these files right now or I will be forced to arrest you.
Just kidding.
What if this is just a prank?

I see you have researched Writing.
If something does happen, I wonder what the history books will say, that thousands of people downloaded the leaked documents? Kind of scary to think what happens when these get opened.
I think the password will be leaked, followed by riots in some countries. Nothing out of the unusual. I really want to see the Chinese corruption reports though.

I guess you are mostly joking, but I wouldn't put it past them to try their best. Or any government in a similar position to be honest.
