Perhaps, their personal faith has helped them overcome something in their life? Perhaps they have been taught this kind of thing since birth, so it's normal for them to think this way? Perhaps they haven't recieved a great education as most 3rd worlders haven't, and the only thing keeping them together is the promise of a better afterlife. But then again, you're a facepunch atheist. Sky Wizards right ?
Just because it helped them, doesn't mean it isn't a delusion. And yes, lack of education and/or indoctrination also leads to this.
You're either mentally ill, or uneducated.

I'm not saying it in a spiteful manner. They need help, either through therapy and counselling, education, or both.
Forget it, I don't want this to elevate and derail the thread any further.
Let's just say there's nothing to suggest that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, fairies, elves, trolls, goblins, leprechauns, and unicorns don't exist either. So it is perfectly rational for an adult human being with no physical interaction with any of these creatures what so ever, to believe in them.
I'd personally say that the religious books that religions have is what separates them from blatantly fictional characters.
