They extended "El norte" way too far
Sure there's hispanic influence down there, but it's not dominant in many of the areas they added
Great Lakes superstate
this actually makes good sense, i have family all along the great lakes, and i'm probably the westernmost branch of my family (that i know of, i've seen there are people with my last name on the other side of cleveland but idk them)
the culture around the great lakes is distinct from say the apalachan or new england culture
It's weird seeing such a difference between socal and north cali
the map also ignores geographical boundires... IE, you can't have midlands NOT CONNECTED to the midlands because there's fucking giant lakes in the way, the people above the lakes would not identify with them, same with the yanks, you have a mountain range between new york, pennsylvania, and ohio so you're not going to see a connected culture
The major problem here is that it's a guy who specializes in narratives using narratives to conjure up some arbitrary boundaries. The U.S. has been a modernized federation for long enough that the impact of historical culture is negligible compared to the rapid interstate spread of ideas and the networking of people spreading them, and the actual political and cultural networks this state has (that sociology journals have been objectively analyzing for decades) are infinitely more complex than Some Guy's Ponitifications. Maybe the book isn't outright laughable, but the attributes assigned to each of these areas in the article read like some bad MMO's lore.
;42822045']The culture of New England and the Great Lakes Midwest is completely different.
This map offends my Michigan-centric nationalism.
No joke.
(Hey, North Ohio, N. Indiana, N. Illinois, Wisconsin, and Eastern Minnesota, wanna secede together?)
Only if we can get the bottom strip of Ontario in on it.

You do realize bodies of water and mountains do not wholly negate people traveling across them, right?
who calls it left coast its west coast
Which is probably it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Alberta isn't known for its cosmopolitan attitudes.
There's a hell of a lot more difference between Ontario and Quebec than Ontario and Florida. Quebec is far more like another country than the US in terms of culture.
who calls it left coast its west coast
They probably were trying to be specific as technically there are three west coasts in the United State, West Michigan, West Florida, and the West Coast. Maybe that's not why, idk.

it does really hamper the amount of communications between groups espeacially before today's methods of communications and travel were developed. thats why you see a distinct culture in the apalachan states like west virginia and kentucky.
I've never heard someone use the term 'America' to reference both continents - 'the Americas' is the correct name for both continents. Being that the USA is the only country with 'America' in it's name and that there is no continent solely called 'America', I don't think there's anything wrong with using the term America for the USA.
It's correct to say "America" for both. It's split into "North" and "South" America.
They're called the Americas because we refer to those two separately, despite the fact that they're one connected landmass.
I'm Tidewater. :(

Ehh, they're about half right for where I live.
Eleven nations, each with their own views on how to rule the land, are constantly engaged in political battle. As uneasy alliances are made and broken, they are all pursuing one goal. All vying for control of the White Throne.

Europe, Africa and Asia are all one connected landmass too. That doesn't mean they're not all distinct continents.

Replace dragons with nukes, then yes.
Dying to a dragon sounds a lot better than in my house to a nuke tbh.

It's significant, and in a couple of years, a majority and dominant.
not to seem like an ass but is there any nation out there that doesn't appreciate "hard work" or "work ethic"? i mean like wherever you go people claim they are a hard working, honest people. it seems weird that you would identify that as a trait unique to a nation.
There's different priorities. A great example would be comparing Germans to Talian nations like Italy or spain. Or even comparing norther Italy to southern.
The whole ordnung and work must be done has a higher priority to the slighlty more enjoy life view that southerners have.
A great way to tell how a culture is on that metric is to consider how "slow" or hectic life is. They can still care about hard work, but have a different aproach to life in general.

Hey now! It's called the rust belt for a reason! There's a lot of old factories in a lot of other places than just Cleveland and Detroit.
I wish they would do something cool with the derelict buildings, instead of just letting them rot away.
