Daily wat: UK benefits claimants must use XP and IE6
Out of morbid curiosity, why Gentoo?
I think Debian is the shit and while I see the advantages of compiling everything, I just so couldn't be bothered with it.
Portage is just so awesome it's absurd. Being able to permanently block specific versions (or ranges thereof) or even entire packages just by adding a single line to a text file, handles SVN/Git versions of a bunch of programs, has things in the main tree that you can't even find in an obscure repo of some other distros, being able to turn on/off specific features using USE flags, I could go on.
However, that's just opinion on my part. And I do understand why people might not want to wait for bigger things to compile.
Wow, I thought mine was the only school that did that. What's even more horrifying is that they set XP to the Win 98 theme :suicide:
I genuinely use that
I genuinely use that
It's better than Windows Toybox that's for damn sure
Why do people choose Ubuntu as their standard for linux? I mean this as a legitimate question; I have used linux as a primary development environment for some time now and I cannot see a reason to choose Ubuntu over some other distros.

Ubuntu makes a lot of Linux shit stupid-easy, and also I believe Canonical actually does some marketing.

Ah. I guess ease-of-use is not a horrible thing, but I still prefer other distros.
This being said, I cannot wait for Ubuntu for Android.
Here's my opinions, laid out in neat table form:

WindowsLinux

Best OSWin7 or Win8Gentoo

Worst OSME (Vista very close behind)Latest Ubuntu with Unity

Special NotesXP sucks due to ageUbuntu's just fine without Unity

What is wrong with Unity? I used to hate it. When they replaced GNOME 2 with Unity I was quite mad but now I really like it. People will have even less to hate with Unity in Ubuntu 13.04.
Arch is the best Linux flavor/Spin. Seriously though people who somehow manage to brake their Arch installation would probably manage to brake Oracle Linux running the unbreakable Linux kernel just by looking at it.
They also force you to have atleast 4 different toolbars.
Unity is slow as hell.
They are trying to force people to use it as the only way to show your applying for jobs too (Frowning on using anything else) - The government website was setup by the same people who did monster job search. They have a box when you signup that asks if you want the government to snoop your account and view what your applying for and when along with accessing all the personal details you have to supply.

People remember vista too much i guess. Windows 7 is the best operating system out there by far right now with the exception of Ubuntu as second choice of course.
Mint is superior to Ubuntu
I also hate that "search" thing of unity's. When i open it, all my porn pops up :v:
Unity is slow as hell.
Indeed it is although despite Unity being "slow" I was able to put up with it because its barely noticeable.
The latest shipment of Unity in Ubuntu 13.04 is much faster. Lots of improvements and tweaks to Unity. Much less for people to hate and jump on the Unity hate bandwagon for.
The unity interface is confusing IMHO, I think that Cinnamon is great because it has a Windows feel to it
My school actually uninstalls Windows Seven off of the computers and installs Windows XP and IE7.
Call that lazy admins who only want to deal with a single image. And probably running some specific "protections" which only run on XP.

That is exactly how I felt about Unity 4 months. After I gave it a chance it grew on me and became a whole lot less confusing and more appealing than Cinnamon. I wounder how many people have actually gave it a chance before criticizing it.

Yeah i'm guessing the software that lets the teachers control your computer along with all the anti-porn safety shit probably hasn't been outdated. I know in my old school you could do whatever you wanted on the macs because it was just the bog standard OS while xp was pretty much limited to IE and word

It was also annoying because wireless didn't work on my laptop with Ubuntu after version 8 or so
This has to be a terrible joke, they say its designed for IE6 yet the main site uses HTML5 which doesn't even work on IE6, then the rest of the pages uses XHTML 1.0 Strict which IE6 can't render correctly. :v:

I'm curious as to why the wireless device in your laptop failed to work under Ubuntu. I'm assuming you tried another Linux flavor and it worked fine considering you mentioned Linux Mint a few posts back. Despite myself liking Unity I don't like Ubuntu; if I had my own way then I would have Arch with Unity although the current port of Unity to Arch is quite bad right now.

Either they hired a really, really, really bad and incompetent person to do the work or its done on purpose.

The way you phrase that makes it sound like IE6 actually renders something correctly.
why doesn't the job centre hire someone to rewrite the pages or something
I don't know, I'm not a british doctor

This looks like a question for Thisispain.

If they actually fixed the major performance issues in Unity then I'll go ahead and stop citing terrible performance for it.
But it's still confusing to figure out how to get to the "All Programs" menu or whatever when the default screen only shows you what you used recently.
So did they do they just reduce the amount of people on welfare?
Maybe it's a new part of their means testing. If you have a computer running anything newer than xp you can clearly afford a computer, you don't need benefits
Unity is slow as hell.
Not in 13.04, running it as the only OS on my laptop right now, and I'm very happy with it.
Well, since this is now a "which linux is best" thread, I quite like Xubuntu.

It's slow as shit due to the offscreen 3d fizzadoodle being enforced and impossible to disable, at this point (since only few months ago, I think)
I installed Ubuntu, and it made native games like TF2 and even Bastion stutter and run shitty as hell, regardless resolution and other settings.
I installed XFCE and everything works like a charm.
[editline]5th May 2013[/editline]
Oh and I also had to install native Nvidia drivers as the default Noveau crap was nigh useless for games as well, and that alone was a pretty nightmareish task on it's own.
[editline]5th May 2013[/editline]
From my experience Ubuntu is pretty sleek and nice and easy out of the box as long as you stick to web/media browser. If you want to play Steam games and such, you need to get into a bit of the non-canonical stuff and at the very least be able to follow some how-to's on the internet.

Yeah, installing Ubuntu and then XFCE over it effectively turns it into Xubuntu, and I find that a very solid solution.
I recently switch from Windows 7 to Linux Mint at work and I have to say Microsoft doesn't get nearly enough credit for Windows. Stuff that takes like 5 seconds to do in Windows (like putting the task bar on the second monitor) are completely impossible in Cinnamon for instance. And a huge amount of changes require a logout-login to apply and a ton of small usability things like how treeviews work or Alt-Tab are much worse than Windows.
I expect to get used to a lot of stuff and fix the rest somehow, but daaamn I'm not surprised Linux is as unpopular as it is.

Well, yeah. Anyone who doesn't like Windows is a dirty commie.
