I recently switch from Windows 7 to Linux Mint at work and I have to say Microsoft doesn't get nearly enough credit for Windows. Stuff that takes like 5 seconds to do in Windows (like putting the task bar on the second monitor) are completely impossible in Cinnamon for instance. And a huge amount of changes require a logout-login to apply and a ton of small usability things like how treeviews work or Alt-Tab are much worse than Windows. I expect to get used to a lot of stuff and fix the rest somehow, but daaamn I'm not surprised Linux is as unpopular as it is.
You have the wrong flavour of Linux, but honestly, if you ask me, the proper one might not properly exist anymore. KDE 3.5 had namely he features you talk about literally years ago, and near perfect. Many people think that KDE 4 and others are actually a step back.
Here's my opinions, laid out in neat table form:

Windows Linux

Best OS Win7 or Win8 Gentoo

Worst OS ME (Vista very close behind) Latest Ubuntu with Unity

Special Notes XP sucks due to age Ubuntu's just fine without Unity

Gentoo is literally for the neckbeard stereotype and/or Richard stallman worshippers. Although I will agree on that Unity is one of the worst DE's in existence
I really wish people would stop thinking Ubuntu is anything but garbage

Heh.. I have to use a dual boot of Windows XP just to top up the Gas and Electric meter. The website is apparently "no longer" compatible with Windows 7 or 8 after a website update by British Gas.

Use KDE.
Many people think that KDE 4 and others are actually a step back.
And I bet most of those people haven't tried KDE 4 within the past few versions, because everything that was good about 3.x is back in some way or another (unless you actually liked Ceramik for whatever reason).
Don't fix it if it aint broken.
