Hundreds of homes evacuated and bomb squad called as World War II weapon collection is discovered in

That looks like quite a collection the guy had. Even if those are deactivated guns they are all still worth hundreds of pounds each. The bigger guns would sell anywhere from £600-£2500 depending on the rarity and condition it is in. For the pistols it varies more anywhere from £150-£2000 again depending on rarity and condition. Submachine Guns and Rifles will often sell for £350-£700 depending on the condition but rare rifles will go up to £2000 if they are in real good condition.
Cool to see a few swords in his collection as well.
They found grenades and shells from WW2, there is a risk of both live explosives and chemical weapons. Entirely justified to evacuate till they are sure the building was safe.
Hopefully they end up just disabling the illegal ones and put them in a museum. Destroying some of that stuff would be like whitewashing history.
I'll gladly take them all as donations.
I find it funny when people say "deactivate" or "make them safe". If they aren't already de-milled, then I would be pushing to have them pay me the difference. Those weapons, authentic and in working condition, are probably worth at least 1 million U.S. (together as a collection). De-milled, way less than that.

Yeah, I don't agree with demilling them, either, but it's better than turning them into paperclips.
better evacuate everybody in case these guns kill someone of their own accord
Well, let's hope they're preserved as historical artifacts rather than melted down or broken up into scrap.
Wait, Penistone is a real place?
hahahahahahaha
Those are some beautiful weapons. I would kill to have a collection like that.

Look on the bright side then, you now know where and who!
Those are some beautiful weapons. In a few minutes I'm going to try and not think about it by carefully inspecting and cleaning all of my firearms.
I have issues. :(
Lol, the British response to this. Homes being evacuated and SWAT called in.
Yet there are some places in America (especially the south) where this amount of fire power is normal and people are comfortable with it.

Does that say more about the US or the UK?

There's a street in my town named this :v:

I didn't realise grenades and fully automatic belt-fed machine guns were normal to own in the US
What does anyone gain from melting down these guns? Do UK police not have an exception for the rescue of antiques? T)
And yet another person has to directly disparage a single country's varying by city police force purely because it's in a different country. Please take note of all the cases of historical weaponry being found in other countries and destroyed in the exact same manner.

I'm pretty fucking sure if anyone found WWII-era possibly active shells lying around they'd abandon the area, cobber.

Yeah it's almost like having a colossal collection of unregistered firearms is cause for concern!
Dumbass.
With the Daily Mail I'm surprised it's not the headline 'Penistone ready to Explode'
With the Daily Mail I'm surprised it's not the headline 'Penistone ready to Explode'
Think of the CHILDREN! We could never have a word as filthy as PENIS in something as readily visible as a headline!
They'd turn into rapists and murderers and immediately get ASBOs!
I think the obvious thing they'll do is take the ammo and the grenades then return the guns because they are pretty useless without any rounds. It's not like you're gonna find any for half of them anyway especially the MGs.
Or they'll deactivate them all by pulling the firing pins out.
So wait, did they evacuate hundreds of people because of a couple of guns and knives?
which included guns, grenades and bullets .... The items included munitions, shells, guns, grenades, bullets - and even knuckledusters. Police thought there could be chemicals such as mustard gas loitering among the collection
Read the fucking article next time.
It would be great for education, would allow people to operate and shoot these beautiful pieces of craftsmanship, and could also teach about the horrors of war.
Letting people play with guns and taking them on a glorified scouting trip doesn't really seem like teaching people the horrors of war. War is not a themepark ride.
Read the fucking article next time.
Yeah I don't believe them. Especially considering it's a dailymail article.
Media and often police have little to no clue when it comes to weapons.

Sorry, my bad. Yeah, mustard gas is a serious shit.

Something tells me explosive squads are going to have an idea about the potential for old explosives to go off, given it's kind of their job.
I didn't realise grenades and fully automatic belt-fed machine guns were normal to own in the US
It's not. In order to own grenades and machine guns you need to apply for a class III tax stamp. Also the machine gun has to be registered before May 19, 1986. These are the toys of the wealthy. I can't afford a real AK47 which is like $20,000, plus $200 for the tax stamp, and waiting a year+ for the ATF to approve your tax stamp.

.. Except an AK-47 isn't a machine gun by legal or literal definition? It's an assault rifle. 'Machine gun' generally refers to GPMG's like the M240, M60, PKM, that kind of thing. I'm not so hot on the class system, but IIRC AR's aren't classed as Class III devices, things like grenade launchers, GPMG's, HMG's are.

In United States gun law, machine gun is a technical term for any fully automatic firearm, and also for any component or part that will modify an existing firearm such that it functions as a fully automatic firearm. The National Firearms Act of 1934, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b)
Also 40mm grenade launchers and grenades are Class III. 37mm launchers and rifle grenade launchers( Yugo SKS) are not Class III.

So even a full auto conversion kit is a "machine gun"?
