In United States gun law, machine gun is a technical term for any fully automatic firearm, and also for any component or part that will modify an existing firearm such that it functions as a fully automatic firearm. The National Firearms Act of 1934, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b)

Well, I stand corrected. That's surprisingly shite.
Also US law has a clause for antique machine guns that apparently automatically legalizes them if they're older than so many years but apparently it doesn't actually mean anything bc you still need a class 3 for ww2 mgs.
Yeah it's almost like having a colossal collection of unregistered firearms is cause for concern!
Dumbass.
I'm not saying there isn't cause for concern and I'm not a dumb ass.
I just find it funny how the Brits have a different attitude towards someone having a stash of guns.
Can British folk own deactivated firearms?
I have a bunch of deactivated flintlock pistols and rifle. Pretty sure it's okay as long as I don't go waving them around in public, they're just mounted on a wall.

Except you are a dumbass. The main reason there was such a big "response" was because of the grenades and explosive shells which could contain toxic gasses and/or be extremely sensitive and prone to exploding.
Also, his "stash of guns" consisted of several unregistered machine guns.
But I tell you what, you go buy a few full auto AK-47s instead of the semi auto variant that normal people have, don't tell the feds, then watch how big of a swat team the BATF comes with to arrest you and confiscate them. HINT: A larger force than the brits used.....
So even a full auto conversion kit is a "machine gun"?
Depends on what you mean by kit. If you're making/adding an auto sear, lightning link, etc then yes, it's an illegal unregistered machine gun. Get caught with that and it's 10 years in prison.
If you're adding on a slide fire stock or something to help bump fire the firearm then that's legal.
