Source?
Surely someone had to consider the political implications of this sort of policy before it was announced?
Were you born yesterday or something, considering what this administration does on a regular basis?
Trump please. I've doubt you've done a Christian thing in your life.
Nothing brings someone closer to God than misery and poverty, so I would disagree.
Some are postulating that the tweet, and a lot of the comments made at the Boy Scouts Jamboree is part of a White House strategy to hurt Democrats in the midterms by creating a wedge issue. Rust belt constituents tend to be more conservative than in other blue states and it's these voters that secured Trump's victory. The idea is to further the divide that exists in the Democratic party between moderate, blue dog, "third way" Democrats and the more progressive factions.
I can see disallowing people who need to take hormone supplements from joining, along the same lines of disallowing diabetics and the like who would need special attention/medication.
Kind of creates a big headache for your unit when the supply truck with your insulin/hormone treatments gets blown up or cut off and they have to deal with your health problems and be down a man because of it.
I don't really think it's fair to expect the military to care for special medical needs that are a detriment to the mission.
I want to point out that it is a mental disorder, it's gender dysphoria.
But disorder != disease and disorder != bad
Just in case someone didn't know that.
Woah, careful.
Being trans is NOT a mental disorder.
DSMV describes gender dysphoria as the resultant mood disorder that occurs due to societal rejection and persecution of trans folk.
Being trans can lead to having gender dysphoria because the people around you can make you feel shitty and dehumanized. Being trans itself does not equate to having a mental disorder.
A good post about it
The goal here is to establish a new set of wedge issues for the President to use against a Dem establishment that is prone to over correction.
Many of the rust belt voters that Trump rode to the White House on find transgender people and the ever increasing levels of secularization in American society alienating.
The tweets today are more of the President's media and branding strategy being used to affect voters in critical regions. They may never actually receive any of the jobs or increased wages the President promised them, but they will react positively to his usage of the bully pulpit as a way to proselytize their position in the culture wars.
To be perfectly honest I think it is a fairly brilliant strategy. His base loves him for what he says, not necessarily what he accomplishes. They want to feel legitimized and sponsored, the feeling of being discarded by Democrats and the collective "blue tribe" is powerful. In 140 characters the President is able to sway the passions of his base while also presenting a media trap for the other side. It's a low cost and low risk venture that offers big payouts.
We will see where this ends. Maybe nothing happens.

Gov. Dannel Malloy called Trump's announcement ignorant and troubling.
"The reality is that a person’s gender identity or expression has nothing to do with their willingness or ability to defend our nation," Malloy said. "Any able person who wishes to serve in the military should have that right--regardless of race, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. In recent years, our military has made great strides to be more inclusive."
On Wednesday, the governor signed an executive order that reinforces " the state’s nondiscrimination policies within the Connecticut Military Department following an announcement from President Trump this morning that he intends to ban people who are transgender from serving in the military in any capacity."
The order means the Connecticut National Guard, the Connecticut Air National Guard, and the other armed forces can take "no action that discriminates against service members in enlistment, promotion, or any other aspect of their service, on the basis of their gender identity or expression, unless superseded by federal law, regulation, or formal directive from the U.S. Department of Defense."
Connecticut is looking to fight back a bit with this, at least with the CT National Guard.
Another question would be, how many Trans people would want to join? Aren't the LGBTQ+ society usually anti military? I could be wrong since I'm an outsider looking in it might actually be anti war.
The rate of service for trans people currently sits at over 20%, according to this study http://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/Transgender-Military-Service-May-2014.pdf.
That is significantly higher than the rate of the general populace which sits at 7.3%.
Sound of Trump supporters in this thread glossing over this tweet intensifies.
There is nothing wrong with that tweet. The vast majority, 78% of Americans, are religious. I've also never seen anyone worship the government either. The over reactions really aren't warranted at all.

America, doesn't worship anything.
Americans can worship things.
He's declaring America itself as a christian nation, which, it isn't.
[editline]26th July 2017[/editline]
I know you'll defend everything and anything he does because you just do that every fucking time anything comes up
but there's nothing "correct" about his tweet, nothing of use was. The President just continues to absolutely desecrate his own office. You can cheer that all you want but no one will really care that you're clapping like a trained seal.
There is nothing wrong with that tweet.
How about the fact it's being thrown out in the middle of his attempts to actively discriminate against a minority group?
How about the fact it's almost laughably creepy?
I get that America is significantly more bible bashing than most places, and is bound to have mentions of religion by members of government, but an all caps twitter post from the president, one that essentially states that god is not only on his side but above the laws of government?.
Getting some serious handmaids tale vibes from this shit.
What? This makes no sense. It's not about special needs. It's about allowing a person to serve their country, regardless of their sexuality or whether, in this specific case, they're trans or not.
No, the military is about forming an effective fighting force, its purpose is not for allowing people to serve.
Anyone post this yet,
The Pentagon spends 5 times more on Viagra than transgender services

How are you forming an effective fighting force by banning potential recruits and throwing out currently serving members over petty political shit-flinging?

Okay see this is where it gets tricky and we really need a universal reworking of the whole thing, my psychology book lists it as a trans person will always have gender disphoria but resources online don't always agree, some do though.
Honestly not suprised by this after all the shitty things Trump's been doing. It may be a only a matter time time before he bans gay/lesbian people from serving too.
The Canadian Forces posted this on their Social Media pages (more then likely) in response

Somehow, I get the feeling those Viagras aren't actually used to treat erectile dysfunction.
You know, it wouldn't surprise me if Trump didn't know that the T in LGBT stands for Trans

Poor guy probably thought it stood for Trump
considering how much the US spends on it's military budget i don't think GRS (i think that's the right acronym) for a few thousand service people is going to break the bank lol
and i understand that while someone is going through that they can't be in active service but before & afterwards they're fighting fit people so there's no reason to deny them their job for any other reason than "ew different icky people"
there is one, and only one, driving force behind this: bigotry
They already somewhat overhauled it from DSM IV > DSM V, it used to be called Gender Identity Disorder before DSM V.
And gender dysphoria is still characterized/diagnosed as not being comfortable in your skin, not as societal rejection. The two obviously correlate but it's not always the case.
DSM is the leading resource on mental disorders and if it's in there you could argue it's a mental disorder. Although homosexuality was also in the DSM until roughly the 1970s so make of that what you will.
Gender is a construct of the mind. It's a human-made parameter by which you can express your identity. If you're labeled by society to be one thing, but find that the label causes distress for you, then it follows that your cultural circumstances--your society and its views--are responsible for your dysphoria, no?
Not being comfortable in your own skin comes from societal rejection.
If there were no community around you that would tell you how to express yourself based on the way you appeared, you would never question the way you behaved. Dysphoria wouldn't occur because you would have no notion of 'gender' in the first place.
Therefore, if society is what informs us of how we ought to express ourselves, society is responsible for the distress we feel when the way we want to express ourselves is not congruent with others' expectations.

According to Trump's team, it's to drive the rust belt away from the Dems when they campaign against this.
You know, those voters who ONLY cared about the economy and not identity politics, according to GOP lol.

Do I have to put out a history lesson on why Trump is wrong, Founding fathers didn't exactly believe in the Christian God, instead they thought there was a "watchmaker" god that as soon as the universe was created left us alone. This one is called Deism:
On-Topic: the vast majority of soldiers actually do not see combat, so If there was valid concerns of a skill gap, they could have still kept these soldiers

I believe it would be "Trumpophobe".
Which sounds infinitely better.
One of President Donald Trump’s tweetstorms dominated the American news cycle once again, as his morning Twitter announcements to ban transgender people from serving in the U.S. military “in any capacity” sparked widespread outrage and criticism, and many civil rights groups are already preparing lawsuits against the president. President Trump’s actions thus beg the simple question: why?
A pending spending bill in the House of Representatives, according to a POLITICO report, explains Trump’s sudden policy announcement. The bill, backed by GOP representatives, was packed with measures that if passed would fulfill a number of Trump’s campaign promises, such as designating funds to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Yes, his early morning tweet storm might be all about the border wall. The bill’s success would be significant victory for the president.
Intra-party conflict over transgender troop issues, however, threatened to derail the bill entirely and leave the legislation without the necessary GOP votes to pass. The split between Republicans was over whether or not the Pentagon would ban funding for sex-reassignment operations for military personnel. More conservative representatives argued that the measure would be a waste of taxpayer money while more moderate Republicans considered a funding ban inherently discriminatory.
The threat of the bill’s failure prompted Trump to take swift action and ban transgender individuals from serving, reaching much further than the bill ever considered going. According to a number of White House and congressional house sources, the tweets represented Trump’s “last-ditch attempt to save [the] House proposal”, POLITICO reported. House representatives reportedly asked for Defense Secretary James Mattis to lend them a hand in enforcing a ban, but after he declined to act on the matter immediately, GOP members then appealed to the President, who happily obliged.
“This is like someone told the White House to light a candle on the table and the WH set the whole table on fire,” one White House Republican aide said.
