I think it's because somehow people see it as being America only, so it will only affect America, while this is obviously not the case.
Personally, I think it's because most people have brain damage.
Glad the threads got consolidated, there really were too many. And I'm glad that the megathread is this one because of the second post
i mentioned that the economy is going to be fucked up 2 days after my birthday
NO COMMENTS
though my amy winehouse joke status got one :)
I mentioned it and I got one like from a girl I know is a conspiracy theorist.

Even here in America, not a single post. In fact the local Ultra Conservative whackos are totally unaware, as they don't follow politics.

It's all apart of the plan you see...

Oh, I didn't realise that it wasn't widely discussed in America to be honest, Only mentions I'm getting of this entire thing over here is on Facepunch, or on the news channels.
the us economy is going to be punched in the dick then have it's arms cut off in 3 days if republicans stop being stupid shits
if they do, we'll be facing hard times, but not as hard without them being dumb
however, if the economy does get murdered, the rest of the world is going with it, or at least be dragged down a large way
I feel depressed now
I've tried to write up a concise version of what will happen if we reach default, as well as a message that I hope is fitting.
Really, it's pathetic seeing that image of comparison to Brave New World and 1984 is becoming correct.
Is there any way out of this? I thought we would eventually have to negotiate with China or whatever, and possibly get an extended time on our loan or whatever.
this could easily be prevented/slipped out of if the repubs accepted the dem plan, which cuts over 600 billion in wellfare, healthcare and entitlement programs.
But that's socialist!

And the plan the Democrats were forced to compromise toward is garbage, but Boehner's plan is like that same garbage but landfill-sized.

I would laugh if they had the brass balls to actually say that cutting spending is Socialist.
Honestly, do we even need Social Security at this point? Any 20 year old won't be getting it in the future, and really, we can just manage it ourselves. If we are't smart enough to save up for retirement, that's your problem.
even though the plan dems had to send was garbage, it's the best we can get, repubs are fucking babies and can't compromise for shit because they are made up of 70 year old windbags that can't accept change
It's fun knowing the lessons their parents suffered in the Great Depression and World War II really stuck to them. I can see them being very happy about the situation now.

I'm well aware.

Yeah, it does matter because they've been paying into it the entire time they've paid taxes.
So where's your prediction?
Didn't make one? I just laid out what's going to happen economically.
If we are't smart enough to save up for retirement, that's your problem.
Also, this is appalling. I am so sick of anyone who perpetuates this "you're on your own, if you're fucked you're fucked" mentality.
Why hasn't anyone ransacked Congress yet?
its in the op
Oh fuck.
Why hasn't anyone ransacked Congress yet?
If our economy crashes it will probably happen.

Social Security is a safety net that is meant to ensure that retired people aren't homeless.
Not everyone has a good enough job to save for retirement.
You are dumb if you think that people should be allowed to go homeless after working for 45 years.
Everyone should read this Telegraph article on the consequences of default
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/8659658/What-happens-if-the-US-defaults.html
It postulates that the full consequences may not be felt until August 15, when US debt interest payments are due, but that, if we reach that date and the debt ceiling has not been raised, "It would be the end of the world as we know it."
Can any of you tell me how to build a proper defense system from looters and rioters?
In time they will come and I need to be ready

Everyone falls down sometimes. Social Security is a human right, as declared by the UN.
Article 22.
Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Well then what does the August 2 deadline mean in relation to that? That we simply won't be able to raise it through Congress anymore at that point?
To the people who don't care what happens to the U.S. right now, this will affect you as-well the world's economy will be damaged if the U.S. defaults
Well then what does the August 2 deadline mean in relation to that? That we simply won't be able to raise it through Congress anymore at that point?
Never mind, I caught it in the article. Apparently the treasury will have a little more breathing room past the 3rd, but on the 15th there will quite literally be none left.
Well then what does the August 2 deadline mean in relation to that? That we simply won't be able to raise it through Congress anymore at that point?
The article says that originally the idea was that on August 3 the government would have to pay $32bn in social security payments, and they would only have $30bn left so they would be unable to do so and thus would have to default.
However due to higher-than-expected revenues it is now believed they will be able to make that payment, and apparently they may not run out of money until August 10.
August 15 appears to be the date when they will miss their first payment to China and co.
