saw this coming, but still
Freakin' told you it's going to be read by his army of secretaries.
Now, if you managed to connect a few, fat paypal accounts to your next email.
or even better, show him an image of you shirtless, you might get a personal response.

Edit
Not entirely, they managed to keep Social Security from being slashed, got rid of *some* defense spending, and managed to get the debt ceiling raised to 2012.
Obama gave a new message where he said he really wants to rescind tax breaks, and made it clear that this isn't the deal he would've wanted:
Do you delay it for another few years in hopes of coming up with a better plan or do you stand your ground and drive the world economy into the shitter. Because I can tell you right now, the Republicans wouldn't have budged an inch.
Well hopefully every single one of them gets voted out of office in 2012.

And if they hadn't budged an inch and let the default happen, I couldn't possibly imagine anyone in their right mind voting for them ever again
Excuse me, but the thread title is wrong. It should say "Debt Ceiling Demands Megathread." I mean lets face it....does anyone actually believe that a solution will be found at this rate?
So, at the current point we're at...on a scale of 1-10, 10 being Hoovervilles and civil unrest, how bad is the situation liable to get?
THEY DID IT
THEY MADE A DEAL

Please, let it be. It's better than nothing.

Yeah, just saw a vid on CNN from yesterday, Obama announced the plan and the aversion of the default. Though I'm guessing this was reported earlier in the thread.

Well then after everything is said and done, sneak it into Congress and ram it through as fast as you can.
The rescinding of the tax breaks, that is.
it is not over until they vote tomorrow. after it passes the house we should be good. please keep this in mind. it MUST pass both the house and senate to actually make it worth something.

This is important to remember, and I'm sorry I didn't mention it. The 81-member Progressive Caucus in the House is quite unhappy with the current deal, and so is the Tea Party Caucus. In total these two caucuses make up about 141 members, and out of a 435 seat House, they shouldn't be able to cause the deal to be turned down. The only way that could happen is if they persuaded some 80 members of the House to vote no.
I sincerely hope that some kind of resolution is achieved or otherwise the world economy might just go down the shitter. Hopefully our country will survive trading with Russia and maybe China but it would still cause massive damage.

If this goes tits up and we US members wind up living in shanties, hopefully the EU manages to survive relatively intact or else we're all seriously fucked.
so have they allowed you guys to go into further debt or what?

According to the newest issue of the New York Post (:downs:), it would seem we've averted disaster by micrometers.
Micrometers? This is America, we measure tiny distances by holding two fingers apart and saying "This close"

I want to burn every issue of that tabloid.

Yeah, welcome to my life. Everybody I know seems to take everything in it at face value. The articles themselves are about as poorly written and sensationalist as most of the thread titles in this subforum.
But still, from what I can tell, this time they're not too far off the mark. Once it makes it through the House, and it better fucking make it through the House, we're in the clear...for the moment. Though it's really just a stop gap.
I swear, this country needs to change soon. Big time. Wish people would learn something from the Arab Spring and realize that the people rule the government, not the other way around. All it takes is for someone to stand up and say "fuck that".

Don't get too excited. It's being voted on tomorrow, and as I said, there are tenuous elements in the House.

We do that every other November. The arabs don't. That is the difference.
[release]WASHINGTON — Both houses of the Congress were lining up votes Monday on a bitterly fought agreement with President Barack Obama to raise the limit on U.S. borrowing and forestall an unprecedented American default.
The deal was struck late Sunday after weeks of outright partisan warfare. Obama said the plan cuts domestic spending to percentage levels not seen in more than 50 years. But many of the Tea Party-backed Republican first-term members of the House of Representatives and their liberal Democratic counterparts remained deeply dissatisfied with the measure.
While it was widely expected the plan, crafted to thread the needle between the philosophically opposite ends of the political spectrum, would pass, there were still no guarantees. Tuesday is the deadline to avoid a U.S. default on payments to investors in Treasury bonds, recipients of Social Security pension checks, those relying on military veterans benefits and businesses that do work for the government.
...
Any agreement would have to be passed by the Democratic-controlled Senate, which was seen as assured, and Republican-controlled House, which still could face a major tussle, before going to the White House for Obama's signature. With precious little time remaining, both chambers had been on standby throughout the day Sunday.[/release]

But every election, nothing really changes, at least, not in recent years. People vote amongst party lines and the same candidates for the same parties are always running. There's never any fresh blood, not really. It's the same ideas being pushed over, and over, and over again until one maybe makes it through.

That article didn't sound too hopeful.

I intend to.

As would I. I actually find politics quite enjoyable...it's just that I want to go into medicine. Then again, I could be a doctor and a congressman. Like a poorly made sitcom.
That is, assuming, we don't default and I don't die of cholera in a shanty town in the middle of Brooklyn.
So what happened to the US defaulting guys? I thought it was a sure thing!
So what happened to the US defaulting guys? I thought it was a sure thing!
At no point did I make it out to be a sure thing, simply that it seemed likely. The people saying it's over and armageddon and what have you were being hyperbolic.
So what happened to the US defaulting guys? I thought it was a sure thing!
It was never certain, just likely.
